Ok number 2 down ... on to number 3. What to say about the book that hasn't been said in other reviews ...A good read. A bit clunky in places especially if you don't recognise (American) fashion brands ..... It gets a little far fetched around the action scenes at times but the quality of the writing is such that I stayed involved with the story to the last page

Bought this as personally recommended. Also liked the idea of a female protagonist. Unfortunately found it a little disappointing. Found the characters rather two-dimensional, and also difficult to relate to V I Warshowski. Definitely not a character-driven book, but even the plot flagged at times. I found myself able to predict certain developments - not because I read a lot of thrillers (which I don't) but because it all seemed rather familiar (maybe due to too many hours spent watching US tv series). Will not be buying any more by this author.

Bought for my grandma as she loves this sort or book. She has really enjoyed the series and is now on book 6!

Warshaski has at least 9 lives in this early outing by Paretsky. Thankfully her exploits become less unlikely as the series develops. Still some of the very best detective fiction around, though.

I love Sara Paretskys books. I read them in a couple of days so it makes sense to buy them used if possible. This is an excellent way to get the books you like for a reasonable price. I stock up with them for holidays. I also like that you can choose the condition of the books, so you know roughly what to expect. I intend to go for as good a condition as possible and haven't been disappointed yet! However, if it is a book I really want and it is in short supply, any condition will do!!

An exciting first book.

I love this series. A sassy no nonsense heroine, and tightly woven well written plots. What's not to like ?

If you want to read smart and interesting criminal fiction, if you want to learn something new about Chicago the Windy City, if you enjoy the way a female private investigator handles her job with personal involvement and risk ... if you want to read a good book - read this.

I'm surprised to find myself enjoying the V.I. Warshawski series. I don't know why I ever thought I wouldn't like it. There are a few things I found a little jarring about book 2. For instance, it is set in the early 80's, so no one has cell phones. A couple of scenes had me wondering why the characters didn't just look things up on the internet. That's not the book's fault. It's a good mystery, though, set in the world of the shipping companies that traverse the great lakes. (Coincidentally, this is the second book in a row that took place at least in part at sea.) V.I.'s cousin Boom Boom, a star hockey player forced into early retirement due to injury, has found a new passion at a job for a shipping company. He leaves a message for V.I. to call him...And then dies what only V.I. believes is a very suspicious death. The investigation leads V.I. into a perilous series of brushes with her own death, including a spectacular auto accident on a busy highway and having a thousand foot ship blow up beneath her while passing through a canal. As is customary with whodunnits, nearly everyone is a suspect. We know V.I. survives because there's a book 3. But to find out whodunit, you'll just have to read it yourself.

First book I read from Sara Paretsky. I had a clue listening to an interview from lee Child describing Sara Paretsky way of writing. I was curious . I wanted to start with the first in the V.I. series but by mistake I read Deadlock first. I liked it very much since it talks of navigation , boats, sea/lakes landscapes. I believe I will try to read all books from the V.I. series. Now I am reading Indemnity Only and it started up ok .

Her cases are always interesting and intriguing. Was interesting to learn about the shipping industry on the Great Lakes back in the early 80's. I truly appreciate that Warshawski has common human characteristics such as an appreciation for less healthy foods at times, a drink along the way and that she lets herself enjoy the company of the opposite sex if it suits her. She is a very likeable and believable character.
