Q: Is the key light made in the shape of the character or is just painted?

Not really clear what you are asking. LED under each key lights up through the letter which is clear and is embedder in the black key. The letter is not painted onto the black key. PS - I have no hesitation in recommending this keyboard. The programmable keys are a real time saver. Also, previous key pad I had required the programmable keys to be managed within the PC app. Not with this keyboard, they are held in the keyboard and no batteries are required.
