VIOFO A229 Pro 4K HDR Dash Cam Front and Rear, Dual STARVIS 2 Sensors

(The video I've added was me using my phone to film my computer, so the dash-cam footage is way better in person, trust me)I've had this dash cam for well over a year- it is simply fantastic and well worth the price. If you want a simple dash-cam ready to go with basic plug and play, you can have that. If you want an option heavy dash-cam you can customize to suit your driving needs, you can have that too. It's versatile and stands by its own settings effectively.The video quality and range is great. You will be able to see license plates both day and night from the front or back. This is one of the few dash cams where the footage quality on both the front and rear dash cam are comparable in action and you'll even get a glare lens to help with pesky sunlight. I have a Toyota Corolla and the cables/wires fit comfortably with a little slack so that they can be run wherever you need them to be, so setup and installation is easy and neat.The app is reliable and doesn't have connection issues like my last garbage $300 VAVA dash cam. You will have both your memory card and app for video reviewing or uploading footage.Long story short, if you want an effective dash cam for your front and rear that isn't so cheap that it fails on you in a year and won't connect when you need it, but isn't as expensive as a Garmin or Thinkware high end dash cam, this one is your best bet. Seriously, you won't be disappointed and it will pay for itself in security and reliability. If you don't have a dash cam- GET ONE.

I started looking for a good dash camera last year, after my car got a rear-end hit. I tried a couple of different cams before getting a 2-channel VIOFO A229 Pro, and I did a lot of testing under various driving and lighting conditions to evaluate the camera and optimize its performance. Though not perfect, it is a very good robust camera for everyday use and documenting a potential accident. Here are some highlights that might be helpful:Both front and rear cameras incorporate advanced Sony STARTVIS sensors (4K IMX678 and 2K IMX675, respectively) to ensure high-quality video and improved low-light performance. The design is well-thought and polished. The front camera windshield mount incorporates a sensitive GPS module that can provide coordinate/time/speed stamp on the video footage. They use convenient electrostatic plastic pads to easily attach/remove cameras to/from the windshield. A direction of the field of view can be manually adjusted for both front and rear cameras. Its flawless operation is controlled by a good software with a lot of settings to optimize its performance with regard to operational conditions. It has a nice display and a set of buttons for manual control. The camera operation can also be controlled and monitored by a phone application via fast 5G Wi-Fi.The camera kit is nicely packed and includes all accessories and cables to setup and use the camera in your car. It includes a CPL filter to minimize potential glare and dashboard reflections, but does not contain a memory card that should be purchased separately. In my experience, various (not even the fastest) cards from SanDisk and Samsung worked well. The video files are pretty big, so at least 128GB is recommended for everyday use. For example, 3 min footage (with panoramic 21:9 aspect ratio) from the 4K front and 2K rear cams takes 1.25GB and 0.516GB, respectively, so the 128GB card can keep record of about 4 hours. Setting the 21:9 aspect ratio (3840x1600 and 2560x1080 pixels for front and rear cams, respectively) reduces the recorded vertical width of view (and the file size!) to focus on the driving conditions instead of capturing images of the sky or the hood of your car.The wide-angle lenses of the front and rear cameras provide good fields of view for general monitoring of driving conditions, but complicate capturing plate numbers from a distance. In my practice, the A229 Pro front camera can provide reliable reading of plate numbers of a car ahead from a distance of up to 3 car bodies at daytime. To increase the distance, one can use the VIOFO 2K accessory tele-camera RTC300 that connects to the front camera instead of the A229 rear camera. The tele-camera operates in conjunction with the front camera and greatly (up to 4 times!) improves the distance of license plate reading, while the front camera still provides broad field of view. I use such setup for about a year and, in my experience, it works very well. The problem is that the front camera does not have an extra port to connect the 2K rear camera included in the A229 kit. As a solution, I tried to use the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 camera as a rear camera. It is a nice, fully functional camera, uses the same Sony STARTVIS IMX675 2K sensor as the A229 rear cam, can be purchased on sale well under $100, and works really well, including nighttime operation. It even supports video up to 60fps, better than A229's 30fps. Alternatively, one can consider new affordable 4K cameras from other vendors to further improve rearview image quality. Those interested in long-distance plate capturing may also consider the new VIOFO A329T 2 or 3 channel kit that includes an improved front camera along with the tele-camera (and a rear cam in the 3 channel configuration).I had a very positive experience with VIOFO customer support. My front camera had some irregular start-up issues that I reported to VIOFO. Their representative Freja was very helpful, following up and suggesting firmware updates and various tests. Finally, when the start-up problems became more frequent, she organized free-of charge replacement of my defective camera with a brand new A229 Pro kit, which works great without any issues.As a final note, VIOFO should improve their Windows video player that is barely functional in its current version. It should operate at the same level, as their excellent cameras and the robust phone app.

I installed the VIOFO A229 Pro in a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and hardwired it with the HK4 kit. Install was pretty straightforward and once everything was set up it worked exactly like I wanted. It switches into parking mode when the vehicle is shut off and goes back to normal recording when it’s started.The 4K front camera was the main reason I went with the Pro instead of the A229 Plus. Picture quality is excellent so far. It’s sharp, HDR handles bright skies and darker areas well, and the view is wide without looking overly distorted. I only have the front camera installed right now but plan to add the 2K rear camera later.GPS works well and can put speed, coordinates, date and time on the footage. The 5GHz Wi-Fi connection to the app has also been good. Once connected, it’s easy to change settings, look through recordings and download clips.Mounting is all 3M adhesive. There is no suction cup included. I actually prefer the adhesive mount for something that’s going to stay installed because it feels solid and doesn’t move around or have to fight the heat.One thing I did run into was the memory card. I originally used a 256GB SanDisk High Endurance card and formatted it in the camera. Within the first day I started getting a “chip slow” warning along with repeated beeping. I ended up replacing it with VIOFO’s 256GB Industrial Grade card. I’d recommend sticking with one of VIOFO’s approved cards from the start, especially with how much data the camera is writing in 4K.Overall I’m very happy with it so far. The video quality is excellent, parking mode works properly with the HK4 kit, GPS and Wi-Fi are useful, and I like being able to add the rear camera later without replacing the whole setup. My only real complaint is that you need to pay attention to memory card compatibility.

When I finally did, I ran into a several issues and posted my concerns as a review. Viofo’s service team responded quickly and professionally. They provided multiple recommendations and worked with me tirelessly and courteously. When the suggested fixes didn’t resolve the problem, Viofo sent a replacement unit. The replacement installed easily and has worked flawlessly ever since.I was so impressed with the product and the support that I bought a second system for my daughter as a Christmas present. I wholeheartedly recommend the A229 Pro, as an excellent build and performance product, not to mention outstanding customer support. Thank you to the Viofo technical/service team!I wanted to wait before posting this review so I could test the camera long-term. Video quality is a strong point — daytime footage is clear and nighttime recordings are acceptable. However, I’ve had several reliability issues.I bought the camera but didn’t install it for over three months. Setup itself was simple, but once installed the unit entered a constant reboot cycle. It still reboots intermittently; the only temporary fix is unplugging it for 10–15 seconds and powering it back on. Voice commands are inconsistent — sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. The live view often shows a persistent “format SD card” message even though the camera continues to record; to review footage I have to remove the SD card and watch it on my computer because the Wi‑Fi won’t reliably turn on. The failures occur whether the device is hot or cold, so overheating doesn’t appear to be the cause.I realize I waited past the return window before trying the camera, so that’s on me. I can live with the quirks for now, but for the price I paid I expected it to work as advertised.

I bought this because it was recommended by The Wirecutter. I'm happy with this purchase.First of all: why buy a dashcam?Well, I previously owned a body cam that I used as a makeshift dashcam. I then got into a crash driving behind a van with their warning lights on for a while. When they slowed down to a crawl, I assumed they would stop and double park, but instead they turned into my car. At first, my insurance company told me I would be 70% responsible, and pay my and their repairs accordingly. But after reviewing the footage and determining how long they had their warning lights on while driving and how slow they were driving, suddenly, my responsiblity was more like 20%. That body cam used as a dashcam paid for instead with one crash!However, of course the quality wasn't that great since it wasn't meant to be a dashcam, and I didn't have a rear camera. So I decided that spending money on a dashcam would be worth it in the event of a crash and would easily pay for itself.I bought the model that comes with a front and rear camera. The quality is excellent, even at night. It's fairly easy to set up using their instructions. I installed the front camera, then ran the wires under the panels of my car to the 12 volt outlet and to the rear camera. The one small downside is that the 12 volt adapter has USB-A outlets, and the cable is USB-C (on the camera side) to USB-A. I don't understand and wish it was all 100% USB-C because that's what I use with all other cables. So I just use this with my existing 12-volt USB-C adapter and use a USB-A to USB-C adapter.In my 2016 Honda Fit, the dashcam turns on automatically when I start the car, and starts recording. There's an iOS app that is decent that I can use to change all the settings, view and download video files. I can set the recording to loop and overwrite the older recordings, and I can even lock certain photo and videos so they don't get recorded over, for example in case of a crash. That lock can also happen automatically based on accelerometer values. This unit also has GPS and can add coordinates and speed to video recordings.Thankfully I haven't had to use the footage for a crash, yet 🤞. I'm pretty confident though that if that were to happen, that footage would be very useful and could be the difference between me paying hundreds of dollars to someone else, and them paying me, and keeping my insurance rates low.I highly recommend this dashcam.

Update 9/5/25:Viofo reached out to me via Amazon messaging where they first offered a refund and then retracted that offer. Instead they suggested the following:"1. About the G-sensor problem, you can try to adjust it to a low sensitivity.2. About the wifi problem, may I know if you are using the CarPlay? Sometimes the phone will connect to the CarPlay and cause the off connection with the wifi from the dash camYou can check it.Here we have some suggestions for you:Before connecting, you can turn off the mobile cellular data or turn on the flight mode because the phone's signal can sometimes interfere with the wifi connection."I told them that I do not use CarPlay and explained to them that my phone did not disconnect from the dashcam's access point (WiFi) and that the dashcam would simply turn off its WiFi radio, as evidenced by the LED of the far right of the unit turning off. It would do this while I was using the app to search/play back footage, so it was not some sort of idle timeout.As for the app - it is absolutely horrible - just look at the reviews for it in your app store. I use Android, so that is the Play Store for me, where it has a whopping 2.2 stars out of 5. I'll be leaving them well deserved a 1-star review there as well.Viofo seems to be suggesting in their message that all of my issues with their product are to be blamed on my phone. I don't have any trouble connecting WiFi and having a conflict with mobile data being enabled.Since I purchased this product, the price has jumped up another 70 dollars, which I think is quite a premium to pay for a very poor product. At the current price-point, I expect a high-quality, reliable, and user-friendly experience, and Viofo seems incapable of delivering on that.I am returning this item and will try another vendor.Original review:Video quality is acceptable, but that's about where the positives end with this Viofo dash camera. The motion sensor doesn't trigger under hard braking, but will randomly trigger for no apparent reason. The WiFi stability is horrendous and the smartphone app is one of the worst I think I've ever used. It just does not do the job it claims to.This product is insanely frustrating to use. Voice commands don't work. Random conversations might trigger it to take a picture when you don't want it to - or that may have been just the faulty motion sensor - not sure. When the app is connected, it sems like I have about 20 seconds to find a clip I want to download or it will disconnect and I have to try again - holding the WiFi button down again and reconnecting the app, then I have to search AGAIN for the clip I want since it resets to the newest clip every time. And if I do find a clip I want to download, it takes about 15 seconds or so, and if I want to go back and download another, I have to start my search over AGAIN. You are also unable to lock clips through the app to prevent them being overwritten - you have to just rely on the motion sensor to get it right, which in my experience happened exactly ZERO PERCENT of the time.One minute clips are REALLY unwieldy to deal with during a long drive. It's impossible to sort through them all when the clip thumbnails all look nearly identical. This Viofo brand came recommended on Reddit as being the best, but I guess the bar is VERY low.Don't waste your time with this junk. Also, almost forgot - the cables they include are BARELY adequate for my purpose. Routing the power cord under my headliner and down the A-pillar and under the dash left me almost exactly 3 inches to plug into a USB port on my Ram pickup. I guess these are made for compact cars only. I didn't even bother trying to connect the rear -facing camera. Just looking at the cable, I knew I'd come up short.

I have had and installed several dashboard cameras for my family and I that were in the $150-$250 range. Some worked well, but many were downright lousy (image quality especially!) My brother's car had a $200 one that kept freezing up after about a year, and he got fed up and asked me for a recommendation. I liked my FitcamX for the Toyota Sienna because it had an integrated OEM look. It served me well, but image quality was still lacking despite its 4K video claim. My brother bought the Viofo A139, and it looked pretty good for a 1440-pixel camera thanks to its Sony sensor.I got myself the Viofo A229 Pro 4K to see how it would compare to the FitcamX 4K. For the test, I did not mount it to the windshield and had it lean against the center console instead (see video).PROS- Excellent image quality (some degradation during night time)-- Sony makes some of the best photographic sensors in the industry (I'm a professional photographer but shoot with Canon)-- Better than average night vision that Sony is known for- Can simultaneously record front, rear, and interior with the 3CH version. I bought the 2CH (front, rear)- GPS built in to record place of collision and to log route-- When collision is detected, it beeps a few times. Video is stored in a subfolder on the memory card (forgot what it's called. "Locked"?)- Videos are stored in .MP4 format- Wires are routed through the car's interior and to the cigarette lighter port, but a hardwire kit (to the fuse box is available for purchase)-- Only turns on when the car is powered on, but can also constantly stay on by tapping directly into the car battery (with the optional hardwire kit)-- Cable is USB-A C between cigarette port adapter and main camera, and USB-C between main and rear cameras-- Cables were sufficiently long enough for a Toyota Highlander SUV and Sienna minivan with plenty to spare- Lenses can be rotated to different, vertical angles, but not horizontally- Multiple recording modes in Parked state-- Automatic: when motion is detected, automatically record-- Time lapse at specific frame rates (the higher the FPS, the more images will be taken)---- Manual warns to use this mode during hot weather to prevent overheating of the camera-- Low bitrate: continuous recording but at a loss of image resolution/quality- microSD memory card support for up to 512GB-- Recommend SanDisk and Kingston the most. Viofo recommends their own branded memory card---- SanDisk Extreme series cost more, but has lifetime warranty- WiFi function to view via a smartphone app-- Videos can be zoomed into for better visibility- Circular Polarizing Lens (CPL) Filter is an unusual feature-- CPLs are generally used in photography to block out glares and reflections to produce sharper images. Having one for the dashcam can help with that, but that also can create poor images depending on camera angle and time of day. If CPL is used, be sure to check the image quality from time to time- Voice notification to present camera state- Audio recording was decent-- Recording can be turned off for privacy- Manual start/stop of recording via a Bluetooth remote (optional purchase. I did not buy)- GPS coordinate, timestamp, speed, "Viofo" brand, camera model info can be watermarked on/off on the videoCONS- Installation manual is better than expected, but if you have installed audio or camera equipment in the car before, it's a straight-forward, standard process-- Installation is made easier with a multimeter if using the hardwire kit. None needed for the cigarette lighter port- A bit on the pricey side- microSD Memory card was not included- 3M sticker to mount camera to windshield could come off over time- Does not look like an OEM camera like the FitcamX doesI tested the collision feature by dropping the camera. It made a few beeps and moved the video to a special subfolder on the memory card.You can't go wrong with a Sony image sensor and GPS combination to record collisions. Should they get into an accident or come across a crime, the resulting video will certainly either help put a bad person behind bars and/or safe us much more in insurance cost against false lawsuits caused by fraudulent drivers.

Absolutely fantastic video quality!!! Front and rear camera!!With all video settings set at their highest setting,including HDR turned on, you can get about 6hrs of video & overnight parking footage on a 512gb card. MAX!*Now, if your main concern is getting license plate footage, I would recommend the A329T model.The A229 Pro is great! But, that telephoto lens is really good for catching plates specifically, on the A329T.Other then the telephoto camera, they are EXACTLY the same.(The 329T Pro also records at 4k @60fps vs 4k @30fps on the 229 Pro) Rear cameras are exactly the same though.And with HDR ON, neither records at their highest FPS rating also, but with HDR on, night time video is absolutely beautiful!! Like, everything is readable and not washed out at all.With it off, things that shine or reflect, kinda washes out the resolution/video quality. Even daytime videos look much better with HDR on.I also hardwired mine and I would recommend anyone to do that as well.Parking mode becomes super reliable that way also.The included UV len covers are also pretty nice.I used one on my front camera and not the rear but after reviewing videos from the rear camera, it seriously needs one!!It's absolutely helps cut down the glare from lights and the sun. (Atleast in my car. 2004 Mercedes E55 AMG)

Everything seemed great. Install was straightforward and video quality looked great. Then I noticed my EV would lose 4-6% charge consistently overnight. I discovered that the Parking Mode kept recording full video and audio non-stop. I tried contacting their customer service but they said everything was working fine as it was detecting movement and recording. But movement for a whole 8+ hours while parked? "Movement" in my underground parking spot for 8-12 hours? The loop recording erased my underground parking videos for me to show the customer service agent but her reasoning made no sense. I had the most recent firmware and everything so I just had to stop using Parking Mode, although I spent extra to do the hard wiring just to make sure I could have Parking Mode to protect my new car.I've stopped contacting customer service as everything is the latest upgrade and apparently working according to their specifications.UPDATE: Someone from VIOFO contacted me after my initial review and suggested some settings changes. Those changes made the Parking Mode useful and now I'm pretty happy with my dash cam. I updated the review from 1 star to 4 stars. I did not give them a full 5 stars as the first person helping me had asked for video uploads that were all 400+ MB in size, and lots of other useless information before checking the settings. If they had recommended the settings changes right away, I would have been using the Parking Mode on my dash cam this entire time instead of going for ~3 months of owning a dash cam with the Parking Mode turned off as it was killing my EV battery.Update: Follow up as I've moved this camera from my Polestar 2 to a newer Polestar 3. Works amazingly still! However, during the swap I burned through my extra stickers for the rear camera. It's hard to get them in Canada so I reached out to the same person that helped me several years ago and they followed up with amazing customer service. Honestly this camera probably gives the best video quality, compared to cameras that are much more expensive, but the customer service can't be beat!Upgraded from 4 stars to 5 stars.

I recently purchased this dash camera, and I’m honestly impressed with how well it performs. The picture quality is outstanding, capturing clear and sharp footage even while driving at higher speeds. What surprised me most is the night vision—it really does a great job in low-light conditions, providing bright, detailed recordings without the usual graininess you see in many other cameras.For the price, this dash cam is definitely great value for money. It offers features and performance you’d normally expect from much more expensive models.I also want to mention the seller’s friendliness and excellent customer service. They were quick to respond to my questions, very helpful, and made the whole buying experience smooth and stress-free.Overall, highly recommended!
