Windmill 8,000 BTU Quiet Window Air Conditioner, Cools up to 250-350 sq ft

Bought 8000 btu whispertech unit to help out my 20 year old AC in the 2023 heatwave - QUICK PROS and CONS - incredibly easy install, cold air right away and cooled the whole room and partly cooled two adjacent rooms quickly (about 700 sf) BUT noisy on the low fan setting and compressor is noisy cycling on and off, louder than my 10 year old basic window AC. ==== PROS - install is amazingly simple, remove from box, slide into window, close window, pull out side screens, screw into place, snap on side screen covers (reduces heat), put provided foam in top of window (keep out bugs and blocks heat), about 30 minutes total. I did it by myself by putting in on a table in front of the window, sliding it partly over the window sill, then went outside and pulled it thru, holding the back up with one hand while pulling the window down with the other. If you're installing on an upper floor with no outside access, you will want two people on the inside, one to keep it from falling out and one to pull the window down - the outside part is long and heavy. Cools the whole room very quickly, that's where the vents pointing upward and sideways really works well. The app is great - connecting it up was simple and quick and I like the automations with one caveat (in the Cons). Also love that the front panel and filter inside are magnetic, no shuffling around trying to get them into clips, just an easy snap on. Also, the way it's packaged makes it very easy to get out of the box - cut the straps and you can lift up the sides and top, the unit is sitting on bottom, no struggling to lift it up and over the sides. I was very thankful for this. The lights go off fairly quickly (easy to read across the room) and it doesn't beep (that can be turned on in the app but is off by default). --- NOTE - if the delivery guy leaves it sideways, let it sit upright for 24 hours so that oil and refrigerant drains back into the proper places. Even if delivered upright, might be good to do that as you don't know how it was stored during the whole delivery process. --- CONS - as someone mentions in another review, it's noisy at the low fan level, that's very annoying as I'd like to have it on low fan for less noise but instead I get more noise. The compressor cycling on and off is also very noisy, more than my 10 year old basic window AC. For these two reasons, I can't put this in my bedroom (bought the Midea for the bedroom even tho the install is such a horrible mess). So it's in my dining room and another one in my living room where I usually leave them both on medium and cool. One thing to note - that while it doesn't blow on you if you're sitting in front of the unit, it does blow on you if you're across the room. I sit about 10 feet away from it on the other side of my dining room and the cold breeze falls right on me which is a little too much (that's why I wish I could set the fan to low). The automations on the app - I set it to turn on, set to cool, set fan to medium early in the morning and when I got up, it was on low and eco. I figure that because the order of the settings in the automation are: fan, mode, power, temp, it's sending the fan and mode commands and then turning on the unit, meaning it never gets the first two commands (how stupid). So I set the automation to power on, set temp, then wait one second (there's a timer option), set mode to cool, wait one second, set fan to medium and that works. There's a remote but I never use it, Buttons on the front of it are hard to read and tiny so using the app or the remote is the best choice.

I live in a 100+ year old, two story home that has a boiler for heat and no air conditioning. I’ve used Amana, Whirlpool and G.E. air conditioners to cool my house. Some with more btu(15,000) and they’ve cooled about the same as the Windmill, but with more noise and way heavier.I really appreciate the size, weight and quiet with the windmill unit. It seems to have a soft start to it as well.(no pounding, shaking start to the compressor) The Windmill’s also have the ability to connect to our local network allowing us to turn it on or off over our phones. You can check on the room temperature and monitor the current energy usage.I now have two 8,000 btu Windmill units, one for upstairs and one in my downstairs bedroom. They are able to keep my house at very comfortable temperatures except for when it’s 100°+ and high humidity here in the Midwest. Most days I only run the one downstairs.I really appreciate the features, weight and quiet. Well worth the investment!

I’ve had to deal with Window units on and off over the last 40 years, some pretty new and some built in the early Sixties (they are REALLY heavy), but I will say this is the nicest I’ve used. But expectations are everything, if you think it will be a miracle machine you may be disappointed. But if you like good industrial design, care how it looks, and love the idea of controlling with your phone, I think you’ll be pretty happy with it. It was easy to unpack, easy to install (with really clear instructions), didn’t require anything not in the box to install (yes, it really does come with scissors to cut the side panels. If you think that’s ridiculous you haven’t been around people under 30 much lately), it’s powerful, and has a great App. I don’t want to pick on anyone else’s review, everyone has their own pain points and expectations, and yours may not be met: no product can be perfect for everyone.But I think it’s a good, well made, and quiet unit, that looks nice and does pretty much what they say it will. The “Inverter” that comes with the WhisperTech just means that the compressor is variable speed; unlike the old units we dealt with that only ran at full blast, this guy will speed up and slow down depending on how much cooling is needed. This can cause the unit to rattle on startup, or make noises when it’s changing speed that people aren’t used to associating with AC units and they assume it’s a flaw. It’s really just a temporary side-effect of a great feature: variable speed means it’s quieter and uses less energy just keeping your room cold than it uses to get it cold in the first place. This is a good thing.I don’t leave a lot of reviews, and this product doesn’t really need any help, it has a great star rating already. But I do see a fair number of one star, “Just don’t buy it!” reviews that are based on things like it broke after a week or the filter isn’t a HEPA filter and that makes the whole thing useless, where they are not reviewing the unit itself, but rather their disappointment that it failed in one specific thing that they hate (it doesn’t say it has a HEPA filter—you may want one but that’s not a flaw in the unit). Just read the description they gave it, and strip out all the shiny phrases and exclamation points marketing put in, and decide if the product they describe is what you want. As I said way at the top, before we all got old reading this review: it’s as good as they say it is. I think most people will enjoy it and think it was worth the money. I have the Frigidaire Gallery air conditioner and love it! It is quieter than the Windmill and cools much more effectively, plus it’s Energy Star Certified. I read so many positive reviews about the Windmill that I got it thinking it would be better than my Frigidaire, it is not. Both my Frigidaire and the Windmiller are 8,000 BTU units with the inverter technology with the Windmill cooling a room about 144 square feet, far below the 350 sq. foot capability. The Frigidaire is I a slightly larger room. The Frigidaire cools the room much quicker and at a lower temperature. I have the thermostat set at 71 degrees and according to the thermometer and the sensor on the air conditioner itself it can get down to the temp relatively quickly. The Windmill’s room temperature sensor reads about 3 degrees higher than my thermometer, so I need to compensate for that when adjusting the thermostat. I currently have the Windmill’s thermostat at 72, but this unit struggles to get down to 74 on its own thermometer, making the room temp in reality about 77. I am certainly not impressed with its cooling capability. I never enter the room and get that icy feeling, which I do with my Frigidaire Gallery. The Windmill just seems to run most of the time struggling to reach its set temp. The Frigidaire stops and starts and sometimes it’s so quiet you don’t even know it is running.I have already replaced the Windmill once, thinking the first one was defective, and the first one was a little worse than the current one, but had the same characteristics. Oh, and the range on the remote of the Windmill is just terrible. You need to be about 3-5 feet away from the AC and point the remote directly at the unit.If you are on the fence about buying the Frigidaire Gallery or the Windmill. Do yourself a favor and get the Frigidaire, it’s a better working unit that is just slightly uglier than the Windmill.

I've had the Windmill air conditioner for a little over a year now, and it's the best home appliance purchase I've ever made. I live in an apartment and was aiming to cool my room without constantly running the central AC.I always have my device set to the 'Auto' fan speed and 'Eco' mode. I'm on calls throughout the day, and with these settings enabled, the AC noise is very manageable and is not picked up by my mic. It's superior to the older window units I've had in the past.As an added bonus, since I started using my Windmill rather than my apartment's central AC, I've seen a significant drop in my monthly electricity costs. This device will eventually pay for itself in the coming years.The WiFi functionality is huge. It's fantastic being able to turn on my Windmill through the app on my phone before getting home.I also have to give a shout-out to Windmill's customer support. I had a couple of questions about the warranty, and their team was incredibly responsive and helpful. It's very reassuring to know there's a great team behind a great product.And, as a bonus, the Windmill-branded scissors that came in the box are very high-quality; I find myself using them for everything to this day.Still, a few things to keep in mind. Installing it by myself was quite a workout. I highly suggest you get a second person to help lift it into place for both your own safety and proper installation. Also, I do wish the unit would remember my last fan settings after being turned off. It's not a huge deal, but it is tedious having to manually select 'Auto' and 'Eco' every single time I turn it on. Finally, I did end up having to buy extra insulation foam to seal some of the small gaps around the side panels since there wasn't much included in the box, but it was a quick and inexpensive fix.Despite these imperfections, I would still recommend this product. It's quiet, efficient, smart, and backed by excellent customer service.Lastly, I should note that I acquired this unit through a promotional offer. However, I have used it daily for over a year, and this review reflects my genuine, long-term experience with the product. I hope you found this review helpful.
