Silverline 665443 Tungsten Carbide Mortar Rake 10 mm Coarse

Excellent, lasted well

I already had a very similar item that I had bought a couple of years ago. By comparison this Silverline one wore down more quickly. I did manage to rake out nearly 2 square meters area by which time it took much longer to clear the mortar. The tungsten carbide on the end had all worn away so could not be used for a plunge action. I had cleared at least three times the area with the previous mortar rake. I have recently purchased the Irwin 10507232 mortar rake and adaptor. This clears more readily and will last much longer, I believe. I have already cleared over 1 square meter with no apparent reduction in performance. A bit more vibration with the Irwin at times.

Easy to fit Handy piece of tool

It does what it's suppose to do, but wears out quick. Had to buy a 2nd from screwfix to finish the job and that one held up much better.

Made raking out a doddle on soft old lime mortar. 100% easier and less dusty than the angle grinder disc method.Probably would struggle on stronger mortar so maybe buy a different one if thats the case but this is great on old walls.

Having snapped six of these (different brand - bought four and had two of these replaced by shop as they lasted only minutes) removing old mortar from below the DC on my house, I opted to buy a five here. Price was much better than local builders merchants. The bits need a bit of care in use as they tend to fly through old crumbling mortar then suddenly hit areas where mortar has been replaced previously (therefore fresher and tougher) - resulting in snapped shanks. Solution, get a feel for the process and patiently (slowly) gouge out the old mortar. The other bits always failed at the bottom of the cutting bit (where the tool tapers out) - a good angle grinder with little or no wear in the bearings helps - an older grinder where vibration was very noticeable was 'eating' the bits, a new grinder greatly slowed down the bits destruction. So far so good with these bits - cost was excellent, quality - so far fine, p & p was all good too - Recommended....

Makes short work of cleaning out the mortar before repointing. Very handy. Easy to fit on my angle grinder. Make sure you use a mask and goggles as the mortar dust goes everywhere. Literally everywhere lol

Great item fits to thread on angle grinder and provides a really safe less mess way of grinding out old mortar. Just repointed front of house and dos higher levels with this. Wish I'd known how good they were earlier. Just bought my 3rd one, they dont last forever but be reasonable. For the price they are great. I use the worn ones for lower working where I can safely apply more pressure. Superb. Use in conjunction with a diamond mortar rake for more stubborn mortar
