My first taste of Monster High
As an adult doll collector and fangirl of all things cute, I came to Monster high relatively late, having spent all my time (and money!) trying to complete a Disney Barbie collection started in my childhood and then falling head over heels for the Pullip family - an asian fashion doll with a precariously large head and irresistibly adorable face.I liked the look of Monster High at first glance because they're just so darn bright and interesting. I grew up in the 90s with hot blonde caucasian Barbie clone no. 1 million, as well as her occasional African American friend. Don't misunderstand - I loved my Barbies. But despite this one coming in a princess dress and the next one coming with a Baywatch outfit, they all felt lacking in creativity. Monster High offers beautiful and FUN diversity that would've enchanted me as a kid: here's a blue-skinned one with webbed hands and gills for ears, here's one whose skin sparkles in the light, here's one who is stitched up out of various body parts...well, okay, that last one might've freaked me out at age 8, but Rochelle Goyle with her adorable pink hair, sparkly skin and wings would have been high up my Christmas wishlist, and now, in later life, the cute Harajuku-style lolita fashions and sheer personality of these dolls draws me in.Although the 25 year old literature student inside me twitches at the idea that a sea monster's daughter would be humanoid or, indeed, that vampires give birth, the collector in me bound and gagged the literature student and ordered me to treat myself to one of these cuties. I did, and as I was quickly in love with almost every release of the aforementioned sea monster's daughter, it was her I eventually chose. I might've tried shooting for basic Lagoona, now sold out and fetching a hefty price, or the adorably girly Ghouls Night Out Lagoona, but I wanted a basic girl to start out with in case I ended up not liking her, as so I chose the excellent value Frights Camera Action Lagoona with her ruby-red lipstick and mature party wear. She arrived today and stole my heart! She's almost as flexible in poses as my Pullips (which is lucky as she doesn't come with a stand, so you can just pop her on the edge of a desk or table and dangle her legs off the edge just fine) without the fragility or the terror that she's going to overbalance, faceplant and crack in two. That said, when I first removed Lagoona from the box I was startled at how tiny and frail her body seems. However after a light tug at all her appendages, I feel say in saying I don't think she's about to come apart easily - these are child's toys after all, so they're probably made to be durable! Her face has a dreamy look, and I love her shimmery under-eye shadow. I also love the detail - her purse is a jellyfish, her necklace is coral, her hair accessory is a shrimp, and her shoes are mad of (plastic) pearls. Ah, lovely!I only have one criticism of Lagoona. I have to confess that I've been eyeing some used Monster High dolls on Ebay and being very judgey about sellers claiming they are 'mint' when I look at the picture and see a doll with hair like she's just been dragged through a bush. Having just deboxed Lagoona, I have learned that apparently that is truly how they look when they are mint. My Lagoona immediately looked like she's just gone ten rounds with an enthusiastic toddler. Don't believe the luxurious glamour shot in the stock photo - it's a lie!! However it is nice soft hair, and I suspect after a quick shampoo and a brush I can tease the multicoloured waves into something less horrific.I highly recommend this pretty Lagoona release to add to your collection or to start it. I cannot wait to buy her a Draculaura friend next, and have many more Lagoonas join her in future.
