They can be removed. But it's not easy. And once you do, they can't be re-used again. They're a one time use item. You can use a set of Pliers or Vise Grips and just muscle them off. Or cut the flange in a couple of places with a hack saw, or Rotary tool and then use your pliers. They Grip Aluminum much harder than Steel. The Harder the Material of the Shaft, the less they will bite into it, and the easier they'll be to remove.
