If you are looking at this HP DeskJet and wondering whether it is enough for normal home use, yes. It is exactly the kind of printer that makes sense for forms, school bits, returns labels, quick copies and the occasional scan. The wireless setup is straightforward, the print quality is perfectly good for everyday documents, and having print, scan and copy in one compact machine keeps things simple. It is not trying to be a big office printer, which is part of why it works well at home. My tip would be to take your time during the first Wi-Fi setup and keep the app installed, because that makes scanning and quick printing easier later. Good home printer and five stars.

Got this printer to use with a very old Windows 10 laptop for crafting and printing photos from my Android phone. I confess to taking a long time getting there, but thanks to a YouTube video showing how to add a printer manually, I got there, and I'm so pleased I persevered! I can print pictures straight from my phone, and my old laptop has been given a new lease if life now that I can finally print from it wirelessly. At the moment I'm putting it through its paces to see exactly what weight of card it will take for making greeting cards, but the fact that I managed to get it attached to my laptop and phone is a real bonus which I'm enjoying. I tried for days with a Canon printer but failed miserably to get it to connect to either and had to return it, so I'm really pleased with this little printer so far. I did struggle to get the ink cartridges in place, but I'm hoping that will be easier next time around. It's also extremely light which is helpful for me and it connected to the WiFi without needing the password which was a bonus! Update: I've now tested it for printing greeting cards and it's hopeless. It will handle A4 printer paper and A4 label sheets, but it won't even take an everyday DL envelope. I managed to get it to take a thin A4 card which was surprising, but anything bought specifically for making greeting cards is hopeless - it jams. I've only printed about 6 photographs and a few coloured illustrations on paper for test purposes and the coloured ink cartridge is almost empty which is disappointing, but the photographs printed really well and are the only reason I've kept the printer so far (I figured it would cost a lot more to get something just for printing my pics than the £28 I paid for this printer!). I haven't joined HP's instant ink supply system so I'll need to buy ink cartridges any minute now. I hope I get more mileage out of them! One plus is that it was really easy to get to 'chat' with a technician for help through the HP web site and that's great for somebody like me who can struggle with new technology! I'll update this review as and when!

I only bought it because for some reason there are still sellers on Amazon who require you to print a return label. Have a word, Amazon! I had to search for how to set it up, as drivers and instructions weren't provided, so you have to go through a lot of twaddle on HP's site trying to get you to sign up for some kind of subscription before you can get the drivers installed. As I had the scanner I decided to scan some old photos. I had some scans from a very old Epson for comparison and I was disappointed that this produced poor results with washed-out images and poor colour reproduction. Additionally, when scanning at 600 or 1200 dpi it scanned, then started scanning again when I tried to save. The second scan took so long that I was able to make a cup of coffee before it was done and I could save. Conclusion: reasonable document printer for the price but if you want decent colour photo scans, shop around. The price of this is too cheap to expect both elements to be good enough. I'm buying a separate scanner for that reason.

UPDATE: My original review is below. I’ve had it a few months now. You have to use an app to do most things (like access print quality reports) and the app hardly ever works. The app was recently updated (as of Oct25) and it seems to have got worse. Also, despite hardly ever using the printer and running a diagnostic report every few days (to keep the print heads unblocked), the diagnostic report shows streaking. It’s a bit rubbish, but I refuse to spend more on a printer for the limited use it gets so I suppose I’m stuck with it. ORIGINAL: I was very dubious ordering this printer as there a quite a few negative reviews done recently. However, I needed a new printer, but I don’t use them very often and only for basic stuff, so I took the plunge given this was only £39. And I must say I’m very pleased with it. It was fairly quick and easy to set up. I downloaded the HP app and got the printer set up on my WiFi and printing in next to no time. I’m able to print from the app on my phone, but also by using the Share > Print option on the iPhone, which is how I prefer to print. I’ve also got the printer set up easily to work from my laptop. The print quality is perfectly fine, and much better than the Epson XP-342 I’ve been using for the past 10 years. I mostly print forms and address labels, and the odd other documents, and for this purpose it is more than adequate. It’s worth mentioning about scanning. The printer has the functionality to scan documents, but you cannot scan from the app on the iPhone without signing up for a HP account, which I most certainly did not want to do. I’ve never done scanning from my Phone though, I’ve always done it from my laptop, and you CAN scan from the laptop without having to sign up to a HP account. Just make sure you DON’T download their ‘Smart’ driver software from their website. There is an offline version which means you can scan offline without needing to sign in to an account, as it should be. Also, I highly recommend download the Scanner software ‘NAPS2’ and use that instead. It works fine with this printer and is so much better, easier to use and more versatile than HP’s scanning software. All in all I am very happy with this printer, especially for the price.

Good product for the price does the job it's ment to

This was so simple to set up. Scanned the QR code with my mobile and downloaded the App. Turned phones bluetooth on and the phone connected to the printer. A few short steps later and the printer was working after inputting wifi code. Set up an account for the 3 months free ink which was simple. The ink cartridges are very small so not sure how much printing they will do. I sent something from my phone to the printer once set up and it was a quick and simple job with good quality print on the paper. For less than buying new ink cartridges you can buy a printer with ink sub £29. I now have a new printer with ink. Its a bit ridiculous that it's cheaper to buy a new printer each time I run out of ink than buy new ink. But that's the unsustainable world we live in. New original ink shouldn't cost more than £20. Maybe one for the government to sort in their sustainability drive.

(See last comment in my review for short version:) I am waiting to speak to someone on Monday but otherwise it is going back. What a waste of my time. So far I have been trying to set up and print from this machine for about 3 hours. Nightmare. Now the new colour cartridge says it is empty when the printer and it are completely new. There appears to be no cleaning like on my ancient Brother printer. UPDATE: Got through to customer service finally today, Monday, although their callback system wasn't operational and their WhatsApp was a bot. He was very helpful, Put me onto a live camera and talked me through trying to clean it. When that didn't work he is sending me new cartridges express delivery. He also showed me how to print from my phone which was pretty easy actually. I am somewhat mollified. UPDATE: Unfortunately that was short-lived. Got new cartridges and great help on Messenger on Tuesday and Wednesday, from service person, but although I got it to print it with their help, it was always stalling and lights constantly flashing. UPDATE: That particular printer never worked properly. Got a replacement (exactly same model) today, the next Sunday. Took 10 mins to set up and works perfectly (fingers crossed)

This is a really good printer for the money. ( or any money) What you want from a printer is a machine that you don't have to think about just press print and go and collect the documents. Despite all the bad comments about HP and its business policies this value for money printer dose exactly what its supposed to no fuss.
