Greatest Hits Vol. 1

This album was built as a 'punk' inspired cooperation by many fans of the genre, and a quick look of the names involved, largely back up those claims, however, it's more of a hardcore who's who, with a very strong and disctinctly metal edge. What's great about this album, and other projects similar to this, is a sense of oneupmanship in the group, you really feel, they're all trying to outdo each other, whilst giving their own take on the formula! Another plus is hearing some that have become slightly estranged from the genre revisit their roots e.g. Neil Fallon of Clutch on 'Crowned by the Light of the Sun,' established names doing something pretty new or unheard of for them such as Randy Blythe on 'Hung Out to Dry,' or doing what they do but for a different band / pace : Jello Biafra. As I've already established, this is a kind of hardcore/metal hybrid album, and it with quite a bit of irony that perhaps the best track feature someone on the more 'willowy' side of punk/hardcore spectrum, 'Barrio' featuring Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio (cough...Blink 182)! Out of the many, short, sharp 20 tracks (rarely troubling the 3 minute mark) I would say at least 15 are great tracks. Indeed, the only track that really stands out as dull or by the numbers is 'Your Empty Soul' it's not terrible, but it just dragged to my ears! Full of nice surprises and great songs. Probably the most 'punk' album released this century NOT from the underground!

Great rock record!

This album is so much fun. It's like the other album from Dave Grohl, released a couple of years ago called 'Probot', but I think this is better. So if you're into that sort of thing...

AWESOME ALBUM

The idea of this album is pretty simple and similar to the really quite good ‘Roadrunner United’ released way back when, which brought together loads of different artists to make some really good music. The songs tended to ape the vocalists regular bands which meant that the album felt more like a compilation rather than a coherent whole. Teenage Time Killers are a more consistent beast their sound resides in the dirty rock n roll crusty Sabbathy type sound, which means a good gel which keeps you musically excited from start to finish. You really couldn’t ask for more solid grooves or more wailing leads but what really puts this album at the top of the pile is that despite the variety of names involved it really feels like a band playing good music because they transcend the idea of supergroup collaborations and solidify the long forgotten idea of a band rocking out. They get the blood pumping and make you feel young and as such any second volume will have much to live up to. There are 20 songs here but while that may sound like a lot it never feels like it is because what you have here is lean and mean stuff, no excessive verses or choruses or messing about, songs generally last around 2 minutes, they rock you hard before passing you onto the next slice of distilled tastiness. The core band consists of Mick Murphy from my Ruin and Reed Mullin from Corrosion of Conformity and then there is a huge number of contributors whose names you will be very familiar with but which I won’t name because it would spoil the surprise, suffice to say that there are no weak links on this album, even if you might not be keen on all of the contributors day jobs.

I’m a sucker for greatest hits albums and this record is a great addition to the collection.

I'm always a bit wary of these "collaborative" type albums - seems they often miss the mark, showcasing musicianship at the expense of quality songs. The Metal Allegiance album was kind of like this - great drums and guitars, lots of guest vocals, but the songs were not the most memorable. I was very surprised by Teenage Time Killers - definitely superseded my expectations! Reed Mullin has always been a favorite drummer of mine - his work on "Blind" is one of the best thrash/heavy metal performances of all time - so had to check out what he had to offer. I wasn't familiar with Mick Murphy on guitar, but need to check out his stuff, as this album is full of awesome riffs and great tone. Oh, and by the way, Dave Grohl plays BASS of all things on 11 tracks - is there anything he doesn't do? The songs fall in line with the genre of the singer - the Neil Fallon song sounds like something off of "Transnational Speedway", the Randy Blythe song is more thrashy like Lamb of God, the Tommy Victor song sounds like Prong, etc. And Pete Stahl shows up on the song "Plank Walk" - holy crap- PETE STAHL!! From Wool! I love Wool, but honestly had forgotten about this band - this song sounds kinda like Wool!! Wow! Yeah, I got excited by that. Sorry. The songs vary between thrash, hardcore, punk - really getting at the crossover sound of C.O.C.'s first few albums, but with a more cleaned up sound. Everything is good, but "Clawhoof" is one of the best songs - heavy, thrashy, great vocals by Tairrie B Murphy - the wife of Mick Murphy and singer for My Ruin. Need to check them out. Unlike Metal Allegiance, the songs are very short - most around 2 minutes, so if something isn't to your taste, it's over quickly. This album covers a lot of ground, so if you like these genres, you will like something on Greatest Hits Volume 1. If you are buying this simply because of Dave Grohl, you may be disappointed - it's not like Nirvana or Foo Fighters and he doesn't sing on any of the songs. He does have writing credits on the songs he plays on, so if you like his Probot album, you understand that he is the ultimate musical chameleon - he can write any style and make it sound legit. In summary, this is good, heavy music, lots of variety, great musicianship and vocals and I am hoping a Greatest Hits Volume 2 happens!

Non recensisco il disco, inteso come prodotto multimediale, perché superfluo. Non credo sia questa la sede. Quanto al media, Amazon è diventata la mia fonte di riferimento per "variant carine" (o edizioni CD estere) a buon prezzo. Tutte le altre sedi mi fanno svenare.

Excellent album. Although when I first unboxed the item I was disappointed that it had ring wear. I was minutes away from contacting Amazon to complain.. but decided to do a little research first. It’s designed this way. How clever.
