Excellent product I almost returned
The instructions are not accurate. I almost returned this before finding out how good it is.I used D batteries, when turning it on it will flash green, red and then every 10-15 seconds flash red indicating it is working. It will be solid red if it's actively zapping something. It will flash green and have an audible beep when something has been "eliminated". I have found it will always have something inside if it does this. If it zaps and whatever was inside escaped, it will reset and flash red again and be ready.1.) Baiting - I used peanut butter (+cinnamon for rats). They love that combination for some reason. Make sure whatever you use, it can't easily be removed. Rodents will grab it and run somewhere they feel safe to eat.2.) Location - If you're going after rats, they are extremely smart and will take time to get used to a new object. So don't move it for several days. I used a Wyze camera to detect motion to see if it was setup in a good location.3.) Cleaning - I used rubbing alcohol and paper towels after each kill. It dries quickly and you can reset it.With trial and error this ended up being an excellent product. The instructions made me think it wasn't working properly. If you want to put it outdoors you can find a plastic bin that closes and cut a small hole out. Make sure it's secure (heavy objects, bungee cords and tent stakes etc.). If you leave it out at night you might have interest from raccoons.

don't buy
Not sure what the problem is but it doesn't work, I believe it's a flawed design. I like that it comes apart for ease of cleaning. But, that is the problem. poor contacts when reassembled. Hasn't worked from day 1..

No mess, nothing gross, just a rat that looks like it fell asleep
I really didn't want to resort to kill traps, but the rats in my neighborhood are becoming a problem, and after one attempt with a snap trap, I didn't want to repeat the experience.I put some dry cat food morsels in the little tray, then put the trap in my garage and turned it on with a wireless security camera pointed at (but not into) it. The first time, a rat wandered in its general vicinity, but did not go inside or approach it. The second time, one finally went in there and apparently died before it could even reach the food. The rat merely looked like it was sleeping when I found it; I switched the trap off, tilted it so the body would fall into a trash bag, then tied the bag off for disposal and set the trap back up.The only problem I've run into is that if the battery gets too low, it won't be able to charge while turned on — you'll have to shut it off, let it charge for some period of time, then switch it back on. From there, it should be able to charge while being in use.

Not as described
I had very good luck with a similar style in the past. I wanted one that plugs in so the voltage would always be at maximum. Description says this comes with adapter and can takeD batteries. It actually comes with a USB Cord and a lithium battery. The other attachment does not light up at all when I plug it into port. As there are no included directions on this part i'm not sure if it only lights up when there is a dead mouse inside. I prefer to use glue gun to bait my traps. I attached a selecton to the lid. I do not like peanut butter as it attracts ants. USB cord is approx 30 in. I added a brick so I can keep it plugged in. Green light turns off when battery is fully charged. As with my last trap blinks red about every 10 seconds. I haven't seen any signs of mice, but my 15 year old Yorkie has been on alert during the night. Is she deaf, probably. Is she senile, likely. Has she ever caught a mouse, no. But just in case I am ready. 5 years ago I killed over 25 mice with a similar device. I like it better than setting snap traps. As above if you use snap traps, using a glue gun to secure nut or dog food is a game changer. No more stolen bait. As price was good, I will be keeping even though it isn't what is described.

Completely ineffective in my garage
Having read a number of positive reviews for this product, I was very disappointed with my experience. The product is very simple and straightforward to assemble, ready and put to use. I only used it while hooked up to a 110 circuit so I have nothing to contribute for battery use. I set it up and baited it with peanut butter and also spread some sunflower seed in front and in the entrance to the device (both baits have worked well for luring chipmunks and mice into conventional, nonelectric, traps at my location), and left it in place for ten days in my garage. The device responded with the blinking red "ready" light but attracted almost no interest even though the pesky vermin are around.. On two occasions, something had tried to access the device based upon the disturbance in the bait but in neither case was a lethal "zap" administered; as a matter of fact, the device still continued to exhibit its "ready" blinking light. I wasn't about to stick my hand in to see what kind of "zap", if any, was delivered but after ten days, I returned the device. I've gone back to conventional "spring" mouse traps and water-filled buckets with seed bait. Both, while messy, achieve results. Maybe this will work for you but for me, it was a fruitless experience.
