What are the vanes made of? Both the black and silver.

There are not two different kinds of vanes. Each vane is made of a lightweight metal with one side polished and the other painted black.

I plan on using this to explain thermal energy in my classroom. Does it work well?

Absolutely! It functions perfectly and is well made. I had one growing up and it always intrigued me. I got one for each of my kids when they got homes. Love it!

whats the height ? and other dimensions if you have

Hello, thank you for your question. The height of this product is 5.5 inches and the width is 3 inches. Thanks again!

Does it need direct sun light to work?

No, but near. And the light needs to be directional. I.E. if there's a lot of light but it's bouncing off the walls or coming in other windows, those reflected waves will cancel out some. In my dining room I can sit it on the table near a large window with sun but in the shade and it will turn slowly. And I can make it turn slowly with my LED flashlight.
