Very lovable movie about otherwise unlovable characters. Outstanding performances by Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Dominic Sessa, and Carrie Preston are honest, layered, and endearing. The movie is written and directed in a touching, perceptive, and understatedly humorous manner. The depth of sympathy the audience feels for the entire cast, from the schoolmates to the faculty to parents, is unique and commendable. Love the cinematography and the way the set and costumes capture the time period as authentically as the story. We will be back to this movie on a regular basis.

It's the holidays at Barton, an East Coast boarding school for rich kids, and not all the kids get to go home for the holidays. And Paul Giamatti's character, one of the strictest, most disliked teachers in the school, gets stuck babysitting them. A relatable, fun story, that works on many levels, not only about the characters and their struggles with life, but also as a historical time capsule of the early 1970s when the story is set. Nice poignant ending too. I really enjoyed it. Well written, cast, and acted. Great sets too. Part of the fun of the story is all the locations, imagining being there, and going back in time. Better movie than I was expecting.

I watched this movie last night. I liked it a lot. It was emotional and at the same time comedy.

A shining example of narrative film making, where the director, Alexander Payne, took his time and gave ample screentime to develop characters and let the story do its job without artifice or gimmicks. As a period piece set in the very analog and gas world of the 70s, the settings were comfortable and believable. People in the 70s weren't online or perfectly beautiful with phones in their hands all day. This film captured a rough simplicity that has since disappeared. Nominated for 5 Oscars, the film is resplendent. Paul Giamatti more than deserved an Oscar for Best Actor (but didn't get due to the Academy being enthralled with Oppenheimer, which I found to be powerful, but also overly heavy-handed and somewhat pandering). Fortunately, Da'Vine Joy Randolph was also divinely poignant in this film and home an Oscar for The Holdovers. It's got great storytelling, some sad and some funny moments...very poignant. You just can't compare Cillian Murphy's frozen long stare to Paul Giamatti's numerous emotes. Murphy went straight from Netflix series to an Oscar movie--they should've waited another 10 years to award him...let him pay some more dues. Giamatti's performance was vastly superior.

I truly love this movie and I love watching around Christmas. It has the perfect mix of drama and heart. It feels like one of those movies you could watch back in the 70s and it is a modern holiday classic.

Kid you not. Amazon's system generate an error message that my HDMI cable was bad, when every other title we watch on Amazon and other streaming providers works just fine. So, instead of having a readily available place to report the problem and get it fixed, there is no place on digital orders to inform Amazon of a corrupted video, and no place to ask for a refund. It is almost a 100 percent probability, they make it difficult to find a way to seek a refund because they know a large percentage of consumers will just give up. Any number of large corporations have been busted for this unfair business practice. I give the movie three stars because rating a movie 1 start based on the streaming issue would be unfair to the movie. I expect the movie is probably a 4 or 5 start movie. The lead actor is an exceptional actor. I'll wait for when the movie comes out for free on whatever service.

"The Holdovers" kam auf fünf Oscarnominierungen: Bester Film, Paul Giamatti, bestes Drehbuch, bester Schnitt, beste Nebendarstellerin Da’Vine Joy Randolph - letztere wurde auch mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnet. Der Film mauserte sich zum absoluten Kritikerliebling und wurde mit einer ganzen Menge an Filmpreisen zugeschüttet. Paul Giamatti spielt die Rolle seines Lebens als Paul Hunham, dem alleinstehenden, sehr unbeliebten Lehrer im mittleren Alter, der schon lange Jahre als Professor für Antike Zivilisationen an einer privaten Hochschule mit Schülern aus gehobenen Kreisen tätig ist. Im Dezember 1970 ist Paul Hunham in Neuengland Lehrer für klassische Altertumswissenschaften an der Barton Academy, einem reinen Jungeninternat, das er einst mit einem Stipendium besuchte. Seine Schüler und Kollegen verachten ihn wegen seiner strengen Benotung und seiner sturköpfigen Persönlichkeit. Dr. Woodrup (Andrew Garman), Bartons Schulleiter und Hunhams ehemaliger Schüler, schimpft mit Hunham, weil er der Akademie Geld kostet, indem er den Sohn eines Großspenders durchfallen lässt, woraufhin dieser den Geldhahn zu macht. Zur Strafe muss Hunham fünf Schüler beaufsichtigen, die während der Ferien auf dem Campus bleiben, darunter Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), dessen Mutter eine Familienreise nach St. Kitts absagte, um mit ihrem neuen Ehemann Flitterwochen zu verbringen. Als Hunham Angus dabei erwischt, wie er versucht, ein Hotelzimmer zu buchen, streiten die beiden über Hunhams Disziplinarmaßnahmen. Angus rennt impulsiv durch die Schulflure und springt trotzig in einen Haufen Turngeräte, wobei er sich die Schulter ausrenkt. Hunham bringt Angus ins Krankenhaus. Um Hunham vor Schuldzuweisungen zu schützen, belügt Angus die Ärzte über die Umstände seiner Verletzung. In einem Restaurant treffen Hunham und Angus Lydia Crane (Carrie Preston), Woodrups Assistentin. Hunham flirtet mit Lydia, die die beiden zu ihrer Weihnachtsfeier einlädt. Angus, Hunham, Mary und Bartons Hausmeister Danny (Naheem Garcia) besuchen Lydias Party. Angus küsst Lydias Nichte Elise (Lili Lee Stack). Hunham ist enttäuscht, als er erfährt, dass Lydia einen Freund hat, und Mary betrinkt sich und erleidet wegen Curtis' Tod einen Nervenzusammenbruch. Hunham besteht darauf, früher zu gehen. Hunham und Angus streiten sich; als Hunham Angus' Vater erwähnt, sagt Angus, sein Vater sei tot. Mary schimpft mit Hunham wegen seines unsympathischen Verhaltens. Aus Reue für sein Verhalten organisiert Hunham eine kleine Weihnachtsfeier. Mary überredet Hunham, Angus' Wunsch nach einer"„Exkursion“ nach Boston zu erfüllen. Nachdem sie Mary in Roxbury abgesetzt haben, damit sie Zeit mit ihrer schwangeren Schwester verbringen kann, kommen sich Angus und Hunham bei verschiedenen Aktivitäten in Boston näher, darunter Schlittschuhlaufen und ein Besuch im Museum of Fine Arts.... "The Holdovers" spielte an den Kinokasse ca. 45 Millionen Dollar ein. Die starke Atmosphäre ist auch der hervorragenden Kameraarbeit des Dänen Eigil Bryld zu verdanken, dessen Aufgabe darin bestand den Film so aussehen zu lassen als wäre er tatsächlich in den frühen 70er Jahren gedreht worden. Ein Film über Aussenseiter, die je näher sie sich kommen, auch ein starke Zuneigung füreinander empfinden. Grundsätzlich melancholisch konzipiert, jedoch mit Sinn für (schwarzen) Humor.

Pelicula ambientada en la decada de los 70's ; " Los Que se Quedan ", es una pelicula que trata sobre clases, razas, dolor, sentimientos , oportunidades y derechos. La historia de tres personas obligadas a pasar la Navidad. Junuos Protagonizada por el actor Paul Giamatti, que anteriormente en el 2004 ya habia trabajado con el Director Alexander Payne en la pelicula Entre Copas ( Sideways ). La Pelicula obtuvo un Premio de la Academia en el 2024 a la Mejor Actriz de Reparto para Da Vine Joy Randolph . Asi como tambien Giamatti recibe su segunda nominacion al Oscar por su interpretacion.. En cuanto el pedido de la pelicula, me llego en buen estado y al dia siguiente de la compra.

An instand classic movie. One of my favorites the year it came out. It’s not the most spectacular story that has ever been told, instead this movie exells in how it ‘feels’. Character development is almost perfectly executed and the performances (imho) are spot on. Giamatti was born for this role it seems. As for the look: i was born in the 80’s but can vividly recall watching 70’s movies and the look and sound captures the essence of that era perfectly for me. Warm and fuzzy feelings rise when I’m writing this review. It’s become an instant classic that will likely get a load of re-watches. Masterpiece
