Excellent Chess Set
This is a very well made board and pieces. Definitely worth the $$ charged. Definitely recommend if youโre looking for a quality chess board.

Nice, but...
I bought two sets of chess pieces from A&A at the same time, this one and one with a pasteboard storage case (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8NRS8YB). The pieces are quite uniform between the two sets, as expected, and so meet my intended purpose. I have replacement pieces for every piece when one is inevitably lost or broken. I grew up seeing many games with small pieces such as pawns, a checker, dice, etc. replaced by something close. By buying two identical sets of pieces that will never be a problem. The pieces are quite as nice as expected, and perfect for recreational play. But after reading many reviews I thought I would check the dimensions... Well, the kings were slightly taller than 3 inches, but the base of the king was more like 1.2 inches rather than 1.4 inches. The pawns had bases that were more or less 0.8 inches, with only slight variations, but were only 1.4 inches tall rather than 1.5 inches. Not a big deal, really, unless you are trying to find replacement pieces to match your missing or broken piece later on, or are looking to buy this set to replace a piece in your set. Another thing I noticed was that every single piece had a oval base -- not dramatically oval, but enough to realize these either were not turned on a lathe, or were sanded unevenly. The case which came with this has a nice wood frame with panel sides which will form a playing surface if the case is opened and turned upside down. The panel looks to be a engineered wood product rather than wood, but is thin, light, and durable. I have no intention of using the case as a board, but will use a separate board (one piece) to play on. Inside is a flocked plastic tray with molded spots for each piece. Makes it quite easy to check that you have picked up and put away all 34 pieces, minimizing the chance of leaving a piece out to get lost. I only hope the plastic is heavy enough to be durable over many years. The wood case added twenty dollars to the cost over what I paid for the set with a pasteboard case, which is not a bad price when I priced other wood storage boxes for chess pieces. This case is quite nicely finished. Bottom line: it is an elegant set of chess pieces with a good case that will be a pleasure to play with for decades, but could be difficult to replace a piece some ten or twenty years from now.

Well crafted & attractive chess set in ash finish, suitable for decor & convenient for travel.
This is a great looking little chess set, with a nice wood finish. I personally prefer and really enjoy the ash variant, as the color palette perfectly matches the decor of the space it will be displayed in and I appreciate the lighter tone. The felt feels nice, and I imagine will serve well in protecting the pieces + board. I recognize this may not be a high end premium set, but it also isn't priced as such. At the price point it is listed at, I feel this is a really fair value. Personally feel that it is of better craftsmanship and finish than I'd have expected considering the cost. Based on other reviews, it does appear that I may be missing all of the documents/papers that others have had included with their sets which is disappointing. I received only what you see in the photos I have included. I am not docking a point for this, but it would have been nice if I had everything & it triggers the completionist in me. I am happy with the set & value as is, but I would have appreciated just a little more detail in some of the pieces. I think it would have been a nice added touch. I wont nitpick about the materials outside of the wood, because the wood is the primary material which looks great, and given the price of the unit, I feel they managed overall value quite well in the places they cut costs enabling them to provide better value in the components where it matters most. The set folds up well, and with both sides of the board accommodate the pieces in a manner in which it doesn't matter which side is right side up or upside down - whichever end you open it, the case does a good job of holding your pieces in place. The light weight, compact size, and felt cover make this a pretty decent travel set as well if that is your purpose. For myself, it will be displayed in a room and likely not see travel, but I do appreciate the convenience if that ever changes. Everything was packaged well, and this set presents as though it was crafted with care. I've seen a lot of cheaply made and poorly presented sets, and this isn't one of those. At this price point, I greatly appreciate that touch. Likes: - I really like the feel of everything, very smooth to the touch, and easy to move around. The smoothed wood & felt combines well. - The wood finish looks great. Personally, a big fan of the ash variant, as the light tone matches the decor of the room this will be displayed in perfectly. - I like that if you forget which way is right side up / upside down, it doesn't mean you are going to make a mess of your chess pieces. Both sides of the board have been shaped to fit the pieces accordingly, so regardless of which end you have up, it seems to keep everything together pretty well. - Nice convenient size, either to display without taking up too much space, or to pack up and take with you. - May not be a high end premium kit, but it looks + feels great & I feel it provides good value at this point. - Extra queens are a nice inclusion. Dislikes: - It appears I may be missing the following contents unless the "ash" variant doesn't get these: Rule book, thank you card, postcard, stickers.. I did not receive any documents, cards, paper of any sort with this kit. I received the outer packaging (sealed), the felt bag, the board and the pieces. Slightly disappointed if these were meant to be included and I just didn't receive any of this. - If I were to nitpick, I would have liked a little bit more detail in some of the chess pieces & a little more weight.
