Search and Rescue 4

Search and Rescue 4 (SAR4), provides a broad overview of the SAR field and how it's accomplished. SAR4 no longer focuses exclusively on a single platform like earlier versions did, and the fidelity is reduced due to this. The USCG Dauphin for instance no longer features an autopilot or some of the other automated features that it has in real life and that were simulated in earlier SAR titles. On the other hand graphics are greatly improved, and the overall gameplay is still the same. For players looking for a a huge variety of missions, they might wish to look elsewhere. SAR4 has a large number of missions, they are just all based on the same general themes. Overall SAR4 is a great game, just not as solid of a simulator as earlier titles.

Great simulator for its time. Wish they would make a newer version

Tried to download it on my Windows 10 and it wouldn't even open. I guess my new computer out beat this older game!

This is a review of the disc version, not the downloadable version.It installs fine on Windows 7. There are ways to get widescreen and high resolutions. The graphics engine is good, scalable, and glitch-free. And the flight model has a foundation of fidelity.Unfortunately, it doesn't appear this simulator was ever finished. Trimmer/sync button? Vortex ring stalls? Low RPM stalls? Aerodynamic issues with overspeed? The ability to turn the stability augmentation system/automatic flight control system off? All of this is mentioned in-depth within the manual, including the specific keypress for the trimmer button. I read through prior to my first free flight and joystick configuration. None of these are actually in the simulator, though. No joke.To make it worse, not only does it not have multi-joystick support, but joystick assignment is based on physical Device Manager addresses, not DirectX. So while it will allow an entire HOTAS+pedals setup if this is actually the first in line and seen as one joystick, in all likelihood S&R 4 will only recognize the pedals as the cyclic when you have everything plugged in. With just the HOTAS plugged in, you have no trimmer button and cannot use PPJoy & GlovePIE to do either manual trimming or automatic trim updating (otherwise known as rate command & attitude hold... I specialize in these PIE scripts). So the cyclic pressure must be constantly applied, and this leads to wobbling and an unpleasant control scheme.There's also no way to get the cockpit virtual head inertia to turn off. That's a pretty annoying feature.This was certainly a worthy beta release, but was not a finished product and a single patch could have resolved all of this and made it an instant classic. There is a dearth of good helo sims that can run on any computer and actually truly represent what they claim to. S&R 4 is just more of the same pattern and not the exception.

loved this game. I really wish they would make a newer version. I would pay top dollar. It gave me hours of enjoyment. I wish I could find another game like it.

Ok, so I might be a little biased herebecause I'm in the CGAbut this is a fun gamegraphics are fair, nothing amazingit is a simulation game, so its not action packedbut it is realisticand its the Coast Guardwhich is good enough for meone of the few (if only) Coast Guard Games I know
