Great value GPS drone, safe and easy to fly
I got this for Christmas - it's my first GPS drone and I am very pleased with it. I have found the GPS and return to home features reliable and they saved me from losing the drone on a couple of occasions. It takes a couple of minutes to set up doing a compass calibration and waiting for the drone and transmitter to acquire satellites. It is very important to do this to prevent it flying away. It is very stable in GPS mode (i.e. using satellite readings to hold its position. It is more fun and faster to fly in attitude hold mode (i.e. temporarily disabling GPS) but doing this while not concentrating hard enough led me to crash it, burning out one of the motors which I had to replace (it has brushed motors). Its probably safest to keep it in GPS mode when starting. This is the only time I have crashed it and I have had it in the air quite a few times. It handles light to moderate wind quite well but I don't think I would fly it in any wind above 15mph as the flight time is significantly reduced when it has to fight the wind so its alot less fun.The flight times are quite short (8-10 minutes, like most drones I have looked at in this price range) so it's definitely worth getting quite a few extra batteries (and a balance charger to charge several at once, as they take over an hour each to charge). The satellite acquisition seems faster when swapping batteries than on the first flight of the day so this is not a huge issue for me..The box it comes in is actually quite sturdy but I have also bought a special carry case (these are available on line but not from amazon) to keep it nicely cushioned with all the accessories and would recommend this. The video quality is pretty decent, noticeably better if the light is good and there is not too much wind. It does not come with an SD card so this has to be bought separately - I got a 16G micro-sd card with an adapter to plug into my computer and this works very well. The biggest advantage of this drone (and it is a huge one) is that it is very light (150g) and so will be exempt from the new UK legal restrictions coming in on quadcopters weighing over 250, which will apply to virtually all other GPS quadcopters.I don't have any serious issues with this drone - I wish the flight time was slightly longer and it had brushed motors but to get that will have to get something like a dji drone which will be many times more expensive.

Decent entry level drone
I’ve had a number of Hubsan drones over the years, starting with the 107 X4 and the H122D followed by this 502S. I have been impressed with their flying qualities and the availability of spares - built a few X4’s from scratch, which is what prompted me to buy the 502 and enter the new world of GPS positioning, altitude hold and return to home. It flies well, very stable and controllable although battery lasts at best 10-15 mins depending on what altitude you send it to - climbing really saps the battery. The video recording quality is good in daylight but really suffers at dawn or dusk. Make sure you put the micro SD card in the Drone as video datalink is poor and suffers alot of interference. Return home function is really useful if you lose sight or orientation of the drone, you flick the switch and back it comes! That said having flown this for 6 months now, although grounded over the winter, I was flying it recently and on losing sight of it in the glare I flicked the return to home switch and nothing happened. Assuming there had been a failure of this function and I needed to force it to enter the return to home mode I switched off the transmitter but haven’t seen it since. In hindsight I think one of the motors was on the way out as it wasn’t spooling up like the rest before liftoff and most likely failed, causing the drone to crash. The transmitter was still showing location and battery data from the drone so if you ever find yourself in the same position, whatever you do make sure you take a picture of the display with the drone GPS coordinates before you switch it off - this will help you locate the drone with the help of google maps. I only realised my error after I’d switched it off and lost that data!Disappointingly, on contacting Hubsan and asking if I could buy a replacement drone there response was a simply no. irritating as I had already invested in quite a few spares for mine. So if you lose your 502 for whatever reason and you can’t locate it then expect to have to buy the whole set again.

Beginners Dream
What an absolutely fabulous bit of kit. It has GPS tracking which allows it to follow the handset. It is amazing. It does what drones 4 times the price offer. Absolutely perfect for first time flyers as it is so simple. The GPS has the great advantage of it not being blown off course. It is also easy to keep track of it due to the way it is setup (called "headless display" which means that if you push the trigger away from you, you drone goes away from you, and push it to the left and the drone will fly to your left - irrelevant of which way the front of the drone/camera is facing). It basically means the drone is harder to lose. GPS coordinates of the drone appear on the handset so you can always find it. It has a home function with it whict will bring itself back to its launch point automatically if it loses control of the handset, or if the battery starts to get too low. See what the camera sees on the screen live, although the range of the drone controlls is much further than the range of the video camera feed, so the picture will break up and disappear quite a while before you loose controler's range of the Drone. Basically, if the picture starts to break up, try not to fly the drone much further away and you will always have control.
