Solid well made USB key but not as fast as they advertise
This is a solid well made flash drive with the exception of the covers over the USB connectors which seem poorly thought out and likely won't last. The drive heats up QUICKLY (especially on writes) and it immediately begins slowing down as it heats dropping off to as low as 80MB/s. The drive is unable to sustain the advertised speeds with the fastest I saw 550MB/s write and 420MB/s read plugged in on USBC. I tried this on two different computers, on different ports.

SSD has some write limitations, so it depends what you want do with it
The Silicon Power DS72 250GB Portable SSD has some flaws; but depending on your use case, can be a great choice. The design of SSDs is a compromise between performance, cost and longevity. Silicone Power has decided to make it look like it has great performance, but that doesn't last, at least for Writes. In the images I used Debian Disks to benchmark the performance. The DS72 was installed at the Type-C end into a Thunderbolt 3 port (40gbps), so USB throughput is not a blocking factor. The benchmarks attached show initial satisfying high speed, ~1000MB/s reads & >700MB/s writes, but this suffers once the design limits are reached. Initially it could write ~50GB at top speed, but writes slowed to ~50MB/s, this also slowed reads to <300MB/s, presumably as unused NAND became flooded. After several 100GB have been written, the write performance deteriorates after between 10-15 GB's has been written in a period. That write limitation continues, however the SSD seems to tidy itself up over time, repeating a benchmark after 16 Hrs regained performance, until another 10-15 GB's written is reached. This suggests perhaps 5% fast NAND, IF SO, the writeable amount MAY be grater for the higher capacity versions. Running with just reads regained higher performance almost immediately. So what does this mean? If you want to copy more than 10 GBs at a time, this is not for you. If you want to use it for general SSD storage, it is probably a good choice. The only question is longevity, only time will tell that. I needed a persistent Live Linux image, so it will suit that purpose. I bought the 250GB version to test before buying the 1TB version, which I have just done. So I recommend this SSD, but not for large file transfers, like back ups, hence minus one star.
