GOOD BLADE
Ive used this knife for several years now . Cut up a couple of deer, made kindling, used it for all the various chores of a camp knife; from food prep to fuzz sticks. I've found the steel to be properly tempered to take and hold an edge ,a bit on the soft side to prevent snapping when abusing, I'm guessing about 55 on the Rockwell scale. 1095 is an awesome old blade steel that far exceeds 400 series stainless in edge retension. About a deer and a half before touch up with a hard Arkansas stone. half a dozen strokes and its back to shaving sharp. Handle seems impervious to wear. All in all a good blade if your looking for a large knife. The things that could be improved upon. The blade is coated in one of the "modern " baked coatings . It seems durable enough but it drags when processing game , fat builds up on the blade. The standard old Parkarized finish would be more useful .The sheath is a "modern" nylon abortion that is totally useless. I saved the leather band with the snap and threw the rest in the trash where it belonged. {I work with leather , so making a proper sheath was not a problem for me}I like and prefer large [by todays standard] blades and this or Ontarios 498 marine are consistant companions ; either of these blade will out preform the old WWII standard KaBars by leaps and bounds. They actually live up to the advertising . Theres a reason Ontario makes blades for , the military RELYABILITY

Too heavy, the lighter sp6 spec plus is 5 star though and light years better
Get the sp6 instead, it's lighter, faster, has the same blade, and the handle with the ability to use a lanyard makes it handle significantly better. The ff6 feels like a broken sword, it's too heavy and poorly weighted to be a knife and it makes a very poor, and short, sword.

Great knife. I know I already had one just ...
Great knife. I know I already had one just like it. Real high carbon , 1095, steel. The blade style is realativly close to a Randall #1 blade. Not the soft stainless so often seen these days. Only down side is the powder coating on the blade. I'd prefer the zinc phosphate like Ontario uses on their Ka-Bar style 498 model. It's a true US military finish for carbon steel items. I haven't actually gotten this knife as the shipper misdelivered it. Another shipping failure. No reflection on this knife.

Solid.
If you need a solid big knife that can do just about anything get this knife. I would feel comfortable if this was the only knife I had.

Awesome utility fighter at a great price. No hype, no frills, just the usual Ontario quality.

A good solid knife from Ontario, but there are some problems. . .
This one was NOT sharp when it came from the factory. I expect a high-quality knife from Ontario, and I expect it to be sharp when I buy it. A few minutes of work put a DECENT edge on it, but not a great one. I think this may actually be the dullest of the many Ontario knives I have. I haven't even been able to get a decent edge on the the clip point on the back. It won't be useful for cutting much of anything. The blade also has some cosmetic imperfections. The grind is uneven from the left to the right side, and it gives the blade a "crooked" look when viewed from the top. Very unsightly. The rubber handle is also not as attractive as on other knives I own, even other Ontarios. All that being said, the knife is sturdy and solid. The feel of it does inspire a certain amount of confidence. It is the same size as my Cold Steel OSS and OSI, but the handle is a little more versatile and features a sturdy butt cap. The steel cross guard is also comforting. The finish is evenly applied and attractive, not to mention durable. The knife is very much like a KA-Bar USMC fighting knife, but slightly bigger and heavier. The Ka-Bar's big brother, if you will. I tried it out chopping some wood, and it performed okay. I didn't expect to make much headway through a piece of lumber with such a short, light blade, but as I said it did all right. This is still not really an appropriate knife for chopping-- a Kukri or Bowie would be much better-- but you could get by with it for a while in an emergency, and it would serve better for chopping than would a Ka-Bar.The blade is plenty thick and strong, but the tip seems a little delicate. In this way, it has the same weakness as a Ka-Bar and many other knives. If you use it for prying, you may break the tip.The sheath is excellent, IMHO. Lots of people don't like the sheaths that come with the Spec Plus knives, but I've always been happy with them. This one seems plenty secure enough for carry in any position or in any way you like. This knife is marketed as a fighting knife, and that's where it really falls short. It has good reach, but is just too heavy for the quick movements that knife fighting requires. At the same size, and a similar price, you can get a Cold Steel OSS or OSI. They are lighter, faster, and much sharper. I hate to recommend a Taiwanese knife (the Cold Steel) over a US-made knife (the Freedom Fighter), but in this case, the foreign knife is a much better buy. One of Ontario's other fighting knives might outdo the OSI (I haven't tried them all), but this one certainly doesn't. The only real niche I can see it filling is for people who like a Ka-Bar, but need/want a slightly larger and heavier knife. The rest of us should let this one pass on by.

A Very Solid, Sharp, Durable Fighting knife!!
I cannot find this knife anywhere in my city, I'm very happy I got this here on Amazon. The knife is well made, the false edge came sharp as well as the blade. This knife is clearly a true combat knife, designed to do some real damage to your opponent. Hardness is 58-59 according to Ontario's website for this particular model. The sheath is great too but it has SP stamped on the buttons. I only came across 2 videos for this knife on Youtube, one in Russian, the other a silent 2-minute video showing this knife I Love this knife, it's rare, solid, and perfect for self-defense. I carry this knife whenever it snows or rains, times when I cannot take my Kabar 1217 because I don't want to ruin the Leather handle. This knife is great, Kraton, Kabar style black handle, thick, sharp edges, and spear tipped. Not many places where you can get this knife, even online, so I highly recommend you get one soon because I have a feeling that this knife will be a valuable collector's piece someday. I will be buying another one. SP6 and 498 aint got Nuthin on this knife!!! This, and my Kabar are my favorite knives I carry. I stand by this product and believe it to be a highly affordable, excellent knife.
