Nice display, but poor motion sensor, must convert progressive .jpg's
Nice enough picture, but to trigger the motion sensor you have to approach from the front about 6 feet away. Twice already today it has turned off both the shuffle and motion sensor on me. At least a couple times the pictures were replaced by the menu for a few seconds, then blank, then pictures reappear. Perhaps this is where my settings are getting reset. I haven't unplugged it nor taken out the USB memory stub today.Thinking pretty seriously about returning it. I was really hoping for a sensor that would catch me entering the room and playing my photos in a random order just for some variety, and it looks like I have neither. The picture itself is pretty good, but I'm disappointed in the rest. Searching to see what options from other makers are.UPDATE: In the 45 minutes since I wrote this review, the blue Nix screen popped up, then the settings screen, then blank, then pictures showed up...the same first picture as last time this happened. And since it lost my shuffle setting, I'm seeing all the same pictures again. So it looks like I'll just get a subset of the pictures repeating over and over again.Contacting customer support for this obvious bug. Search of the manual or website shows no way to update the firmware. If they can't come up with a good solution quickly, I'm returning it.UPDATE2: Nix support replied overnight with a link to the new firmware and easy instructions. Why they don't have this on their website, I don't know. This didn't fix the problem at all though. Since they had responded so quickly, I gave support another try. They suggested that some of my files might be saved as Progressive JPEG, and suggested a free utility to resize the photos.Well, this didn't sound so good, as if I'd lose some resolution, and figuring out which files are progressive seemed like quite a task. First, I found a tool to check them, from a website called techslides. Sure enough, a few of the ones I checked were, though most weren't.Then I checked out the tool they suggested, from FastStone. It had a bulk converter, and I verified that one of the settings boxes was for Progressive, which was off by default. I changed other settings to try to get the highest resolution. I decided to just convert all files to a new directory, without going through one at a time to see which were progressive, and see how it came out. It took a few minutes to do 500+ files, but probably less than 15. The overall directory size was about 10% less, so something was lost, but the photos still look ok.Plugged the USB stick back in the frame and let it run. It ran about 2 hours on shuffle, then I changed to a set order and made sure it went through from beginning to end, and there are no resets, and my settings are preserved. So, the reset problems is fixed.I've upgraded my rating from 2* to 4*. Overall I'd say it's a 3+* frame because I don't think the sensor is any better, and the remote isn't all that great, but it's a nice frame at a good price. Add in the very responsive support who fixed my problem quickly--and note that I was the one who wanted the firmware update first, or they might have gotten the progressive property first--I round it up to 4*. I'm keeping the frame now rather than returning. But really, it would be better if they'd handle progressive format, or at least not crash and reset my settings. Putting up an error msg for the skipped file would be best so I'd know why some pics aren't displaying, and maybe why, but it wouldn't reset everything.

Not easy
The picture is reasonable and we really enjoy watching the frame. But it isn't plug and play.Getting photos to play is a NIGHTMARE. You would think you could just copy onto the USB and you are done. WRONG WRONG WRONG.Copying is fine, however, some picture will just not play. There is no pattern to it. I resorted to copying a few at a time and comparing to the pictures on the computer to determine which were being skipped. Some were just skipped and some would crash the frame and cause it to restart. Once I found which ones were causing and issue I would try to fix them and then repeat. Very time consuming. I have spent many hours looking for a pattern...size, aspect, resolution, etc. There is no pattern. The frame just doesn't like some.So you finally have the pictures loaded. If you want them in an order, that is tricky. The way it sorts A-Z is not using the same character/code set as other devices. It will put all lowercase at the end. Also sometimes there was just no way to get the pictures to show in name order. Somehow it would interpret the character order differently. So if strict order is important to you, it will be tricky. If the photos are large, you will get some lines in the display - it cannot seem to handle a large photo, so you will have to save it to a lower quality/size. The "random" mode seems to be exactly the same as the date order and it always plays in the same sequence through the pictures...so it isn't really random. If you unplug the device it starts at the beginning again. If you just use the remote to power it off, it will remember its place and pick up from there if you turn on the remote again. When you are debugging the playing of photos and taking the usb out and putting it back, it will start at the beginning again. This does not have the feature that the 18 inch wifi frame does where the borders if the picture doesn't fit will pick up the color from the picture. In this frame the borders are always black. It will read a stick that is larger than 8GB. I don't know if it will process if you have pictures that go over that. It does process multiple folders on the flash drive fine.Technical support folks are nice, but can't really help. I think the software just needs a good upgrade.Bottom line: It is nice to see our pictures and the display is good. Just getting the pictures to play will take some effort. I don't think this is a frame you can send to an older relative and just have them pop in the USB unless you have done all the diagnosing first.

Excellent Picture Quality
It took me a little while to learn just how to operate this frame efficiently, but once I did, I like it a lot! I'm especially pleased with the picture quality, which is as good as I get on my computer....perhaps even better. The manual that comes with it could be a bit more detailed. But the frame itself appears to be of good quality. This 17" one cannot be mounted on the wall. Most of my pictures do not fill out the entire frame, but if I set it to fill the frame, they become a bit distorted. Some, such as panoramic views, do cover the full frame. The surface is high gloss, so it does show reflections when turned off, but when pictures are showing this is no problem. The motion detector does give some problems. I did not realize that if I set the frame to turn on and off at specified times, then the motion detector does not automatically turn on when motion is detected. I contacted Nix about this and discovered this anomaly. So you can have motion detection or time settings, but not both. Even with the time settings turned off, the motion detector is not totally reliable, and sometimes does not detect motion. The frame comes with a small jump drive, but not a memory card. Putting pictures onto either takes some time of course. I had to plug a card into my computer, open my picture file, and drag the pictures onto the card. A wifi frame would make this a lot faster, but of course would also be more expensive. Overall, I am quite happy with my frame.

Endlich!
Also schware Balken an den Seiten.Aber die sind hinreichend dunkel.

Excellent Product and Customer Service
This item is great for displaying digital photos, I’ve not used video but Customer Support is patient and of an excellent and attentive nature. When I had some difficulty setting the frame up as I wanted I received follow up emails to check everything was ok. It’s all pretty straight forward actually and on moving home, I lost my power lead, I spoke with Errol who readily understood my issue and arranged for a replacement power adaptor. To be honest it’s an excellent item with pretty much unsurpassed Customer Service. Thanks

Big size for a reasonable price
I finally purchased a digital picture frame after many years of looking. All were too small or way too expensive, until now.I have a 17 inch Nixplay and its really good, the quality of the image is great because it has a good resolution and an IPS screen. This allows you to see the image from all angles. Its very easy to setup as you plug a USB in the back with your images and off it goes.It has a great feature using a motion sensor and will turn off after a predetermined time of no movement is detected and comes back on again if movement is detected.I have mine in my office and is lovely. My only minor gripes are that I wish the screen didnt have a reflective gloss glass finish, as this reflects other things and detracts from the image being displayed. All my standard static picture frames use a matt non reflective finish. So it would have been much better to use that. The other being that there is a wonderful sleep function that will turn the frame off at set hours. So i would set mine in my office to power on in the morning and power off when i go home, however you cannot use this function if you use the motion detection. I wouldnt like to walk down stairs at night in the dark and my digital picture frames all turn on. Just a personal thought. It should be easy to set up the motion detection to only work during on hours. But apparently this is not the case, its one or the other but not both.So a great quality frame, very easy to setup.Lovely size, shame about the reflective glass.

Another failed unit for return
Photo frame was great to start with, display was clear and I was impressed with the ease of set up. Regrettably, like the frame this replaced, the glitches soon started to emerge. Unit turns itself off and will only turn on if it is turned off at the mains for 10 plus seconds. Pictures often merge with each other or half the screen is multicoloured lines. Hoping Amazon will come to my rescue once again as still less than a year old.

Keeps crashing!
Software keeps crashing and rebooting. I can't understand these reviews, displays a few photos and then reboots. Also no options apply when the clock is shown, always starts from the same point, not random. No chance of seeing all my photos!Totally overpriced for what it is, i thought these things had improved since the originals, but no. How difficult is it too make a decent digital photo Frame?
