A few jealous campers...
That's right. You'll be sparking some reactions with this light on your next camping trip. Sun goes down, you start pumping and boom, ignition throws up some eye catching flames and after a few seconds the injector is spraying a fine mist of unleaded petrol, shining a warm light onto your camping spot. And an old school hiss of burning petrol, remembering the days of the Petromax.Price: you may get lucky and buy it half price as I did, having paid around £70 for it. This is a true bargain for one of the best outdoor fuel lamps on the market. In my opinion, the best there is. I have tried Vapalux, Tiley and Petromax, and between new old stock units, new ones made in China and used ones as well, I prefer the NorthStar from Coleman. Even if you pay full price, it's still a wonderful purchase that will serve you well for years to come, but that's for you to decide of course.Build: Top quality item, the whole lamp is very good, heavy duty feel on every aspect, from the base, cylinder, glass, protective frame, even the handle, it's top quality no doubt. Bear in mind that you're handling a pressurized cylinder full of high explosive gasoline, so quality of components is paramount to assure, above all, safety.Usage: nothing short of fantastic. Very easy to start, being unleaded petrol, just pump, open the fuel valve and ignite using an electric spark. This is a huge advantage being gasoline, whereas diesel needs to be primed, takes its time and it's messy - diesel is an oily fuel and leaves residue, does not evaporate like gasoline does. The intensity valve has a very nice level, raging from high output to a very dim light.A full tank will burn for around 10 hours at maximum output, which is very good. One advantage when compared to gas canisters, propane or butane, besides being a lot cheaper, unleaded you are likely to find anywhere. You are virtually worry free because you can always find some gas station and buy a couple of litres. I carry a gas tank with 4 liters of fuel to feed both the lantern and the Coleman stove, which is more than enough for two weeks worth of camping. So the next time you are camping, please treat yourself to a proper lantern and steer away from LED lights or bulbs fed from a mains plug, this Coleman lantern is the proper camping spiritI bought the Coleman fuel or white gas, which should burn clearer and is cleaner than unleaded, although much more expensive. Supposedly it will run the lantern longer without any clogging or impurities jamming the injector, but this is yet to be tested. I think that using unleaded and keeping a standard regular maintenance is good enough to avoid the much more expensive Coleman fuel.So in brief, a very sound purchase if you need a new lantern, an excellent piece of reliable and cost effective camping gear. And it's gorgeous too. :)

Good lantern but missing the red fuel funnel
This is now my second Northstar Lantern but this one is for a friend. It’s really bright and easy to operateNote that even though it says on the box that it includes the little red fuel funnel, the funnel is actually missing. I’ve noticed other people have had the same problem and these funnels cost over £4.00 to buy.So the lantern I’m happy with but not too happy with the missing funnel

seriously bright
A large and heavy lamp that creates a serious amount of light. The northstar is not something to be played with or used drunk! It uses pressurised petrol, fire, gives off fumes and gets hot. It could easily become very dangerous if not used properly. Having said that its a brilliant piece of kit. Just not to be taken inside your tent or allowed anywhere near kids. The mantles are easy to change. The fuel tank is large and I run mine on normal unleaded and so far no serious problems. The spare parts are clearly available and I think each winter will require a service. The lamp makes a hissing noise when lit. Its not something that bothers me, just something to be aware of if you wish to be lit silently. The light is yellow and much nicer to sit in than the cold white LEDs. Lighting the lantern often involves a couple of seconds of flames leaping out of the top. This is normal, but reminds you this is not a toy. The flame is very controllable and when switched up gives off an extremely bright light that cannot be looked at directly. Excellent in the garden on summer evenings, I use ours outdoors when camping and it allows us to function without lots of little electric lights. I would buy another. Just needs to be stored carefully when travelling. I bought mine a padded case on ebay. Coleman do make a proper case. This doesn't come as standard and is difficult to buy in UK.

Extremely bright and powerful lamp.
Having used similar lamps in the military, this particular one is unbelievably bright. The initial ignition to light it after pumping up the pressure still gives me a scare as it sparks and combusts the petrol vapour, not a relaxing start! However, you could just pump it up have a long match ready and take more control to initiate the lamp. It burns for hours and i use unleaded from the garage but have experienced soot issues on the glass and top if it doesn’t light and vaporise quickly enough. The heat from the top can be dangerous if you leave the carrying handle up or touch to top of the lantern. I have used 2 mantels in 3 years by packing it back in the box when not in use. Always remember to fit the mantel, then set it alight with a lighter before you use it, then never touch the mantle again or it will crumble to powder. Great for back ups as well in the event of power cuts, but I would use it out doors only !!
