The Heart Of An Aladdin Kerosene Lamp
If you haven't seen an Aladdin kerosene lamp then you need to. They are a remarkable piece of technology (even though they've been around a long time). If you grew up going on campouts where there was always a kid that had a gas lantern (remember pumping up the tank pressure?) then the Aladdin kerosene lamp will be a pleasant surprise ..... no pumping up the tank, with kerosene you'll be less concerned about the thing blowing up in your face (pressurized gas makes me nervous), and it's quiet .... I mean really quiet. The 'heart' of the Aladdin kerosene lamp is its mantle. It's operation is similar to the gas lantern but the Aladdin runs on kerosene and it isn't pressurized. The kerosene lamp that you may have had as a child generated light by the carbon in the kerosene being hot enough to put out some visible light (though not much). The Aladdin kerosene lamp generates its light by the kerosene flame heating the mantle to incandescence; it is a very much more efficient process as compared to just a kerosene flame. In several places in their literature Aladdin says that their lamps put out the light of a 60 Watt light bulb. I don't know if it's 60 Watts but if not it's close; if you turn up the wick (to increase the flame) the mantle will be glowing white. The 'down-side' is that you're dealing with a very hot object; make sure that there are no children who can get near the lamp. Also it will consume oxygen from a room (though I don't think too fast as he lamp is very efficient). Interestingly there is very little smell once the lamp is up to operating temperature ... the white hot mantle is apparently very good at making sure that the kerosene vapor is consumed in the combustion process. So if you've got an Aladdin lamp that works why would you want another mantle ? Easy .... if your present mantle breaks and you don't have a spare your lamp is unusable and the mantle is very 'brittle'. A new mantle has some kind of 'blue stuff' that it looks to have been dipped in but the first time you light it up the heat from the kerosene flame burns the coating away and leaves the mantle a whitish color. Once a mantle has been used (it's that whitish color) it is very brittle; don't try to remove the mantle from where it's locked-down into the base of the chimney and when you lift off the chimney to light the lamp try not to jar it as you might shatter the mantle. So if you plan to use an Aladdin kerosene lamp you'll want at least one spare (new) mantle for back-up (get a spare chimney too and then you're in pretty good shape).

Excellent mantle. Here's some tips!
Excellent mantles for Aladdin lanterns. If when burning your lamp and black carbon gets on the mantle, adjust the flame a bit lower (without producing smoke or seeing a flame through the mantle) and it will soon burn off any carbon build-up. You can use K1 kerosene for these as other lamp oils produced for Aladdin lanterns are quite expensive. Can get a gallon at Wal Mart for 11.77. Beautiful lighting. Burns clean when done properly with absolutely no odors (except when you blow out the flame you will smell a little and maybe a little at light up). Adds a nice warmth to your space during the cold winter months.

Quality item-Bad shipping
Basic replacement mantle. Be sure to check the packaging, as these are delicate. Mine had to be replaced because it was bent badly. These should be mailed in a box - NOT a mailer bag.

Bright and wonderful!
Works great, except that I accidentally bumped it with my finger after the initial burn-off, so now I have a stupid small hole in it right from the start. But even still, it's bright as heck and I love it. I plan to buy another one (or two) after the other eighty to a hundred $25 items I'm in need of. lol

Is the Aladdin dead? Use these and you might think so!
Looks like truly functional Aladdin lamps may no longer be possible. These items LOOK like what they say they are, but they are mostly worthless. They mount properly on the lamp, when ignited they burn off as expected, leaving the white ash that forms the actual mantle. When the wick is ignited and the mantle is placed, the results are encouraging: light! Fast-forward to an hour later: with wick setting not moved, flame level the same, light output is approximately half what it was to start with!!!! Detail: at first, the flame can't be seen because the light from the mantle is so bright. After an hour, the mantle is still white in patches and the flame can be easily seen through the mantle threads. Turning up the flame doesn't help: carbon patches appear quickly on the mantle. The appearance is initially perfect, but the material (yttrium?) that causes the white light appears to burn off quickly. (What effect does that have on health? A topic to investigate...) Finally, strike three: after about 4 - 5 hours of burn time (I was using it to heat the room during a cold snap ... nostalgia, I guess: we actually used Aladdins for illumination decades ago) the mantle begins to look moth-eaten, holes appear, it becomes increasingly fragile and must be discarded. AMAZON: these things are essentially frauds. The manufacturing process is creating defective products. NOTE: these items were kindly sent by Amazon to replace two that arrived crushed, due to their bubble wrap envelope not being able to withstand the environment encountered in transit. Now I will have to discuss refunds.
