Great in many ways, but smaller and narrower than previous New Balance shoes
I like the subdued style. I intended these as everyday casual shoes. I like the very breathable upper to help feet cool. I like the foam sole. It offers good cushioning and despite the review that complains it feels stiff it bends comfortably on the foot. However it is at least a half size shorter than my New Balance 992s. Both are 10.5 2Es, but the fit is very different. It's immediately evident by feel. Or by a side by side visual comparison. The 1165 is significantly shorter and the toe box is narrower. It tapers in too much at the big toe. That pushes the toe toward the middle of the foot and pinches the knuckle. I will definitely be returning these. Maybe an 11 4E will fit like I expected. I understand that sizes and proportions vary from shoe to shoe but I expect them to be more consistent when the shoes are from the same manufacturer. Buy at least one size wider and a half size larger than you usually do. I'll update my review to let you know how that works for me.

Narrow toe box for a wide show is a show stopper.
I have some NB shoes already, size 11.5 2E wide. Needing a wide shoe, and having read the reviews there that these could run small so I ordered two different sizes--11.5 2E and 12 4E, adding a half size and a little extra width. The design of these shoes make for a narrow toe box. The middle is nice and wide, but the toe box narrows right where your toes are. My toes don't form a point, they are as wide as my foot! Hence the 11.5 2E had my big toe rubbing the side of the shoe where the toe box narrows. The 12 4E are a bit too roomy. Also, the top fabric offers no support. It's very thin and airy. I'm used to a leather upper, and these just don't offer much support. Also, the foam base is not as dreamy as you'd hope.

So far the best walking shoes I ever owned
I still own NB 928, 877, 411 and 365. Until I bought the 1165 the 411's were my favorites and I was looking to buy another pair and then I saw 1165 and decided to try them. They are absolutely the lightest, most comfy and best looking walking shoes I've ever had. My feet are never sweaty thanks to the mesh and the sole provides good support and traction (as opposed to otherwise awesome 365's - they have foam soles with no rubber layer).

Not for heavyweights
I am 6’1, weigh 240 lbs. and a heel striker. I have used these shoes for 45 days and walked over 150 miles, and the cushioning has begun to loose its impact. The result, sore knees and heels.Great out of the box, super comfortable. Maybe useful for a lighter individual or for occasional walks, but not build for everyday use.

"Fresh Foam" is minimal
This was not at all what I expected. The do fit fine and are good shoes, but the hype and reviews about how "cushy" they are I think are misleading. The soft foam in the inner liner is about 3/16" and the Fresh Foam midsole seems just as minimal. There is very little main arch support and no metatarsal support.I think this is the first shoe that I have purchased in 30 years that didn't feel right on my foot from the beginning, including the Florsheim Riva shoes I wear every day. My old worn out Skechers are much softer walking than these and even my even older Merrill Moab trail walking shoes still have better cushioning. If you are coming from a very firm running shoe, like a pair of New Balance I have that are almost hard, then they may feel soft.Fortunately, the inner liner comes out and I can put some old (dog-chewed) custom orthotics in them. They have much more padding than this show and of course the necessary support. They will work and seem to be well built, but when this is touted as a "soft walking shoe" the hype is way off.

NB made in the USA always fit perfect I've been wearing size 14 4E for over 20 years. Now this pair came from Viet Nam and was marked 14 4E and it fit like a size 13 D. the exchange was a 15 4E and it fits perfect. I am now concerned about future shoe orders.

A bit narrow for 4E... Maybe.
These are very comfortable, lightweight and stylish shoes. The "Fresh Foam" is worth its weight in pure gold. Super soft and supportive. I depend on having shoes with soles that are wider than my weighted foot, as I have an injury related supination problem. These are not quite there. Maybe if they made a 6E in this pair, that'd be the way to go, but I think shoe width is so neglected that no two shoes are alike, even when rated with the same width rating. I have 4E shoes and boots that are perfect... I have some that fit like a normal width shoe... like, who has feet that narrow.I love New Balance. They have been my go-to since I broke my ankle several years ago. But it's very difficult to get attractive shoes in the proper width. New Balance really owes it to themselves and their reputation to pay more attention to non-geriatric customers with wide width or podiatry problemsThese are definitely worth trying.. If they fit you well, you will love them!!!

Not as soft as I thought
I currently run in New Balance shoes and wanted a specific shoe to walk in. When I found that New Balance has specific walking shoes I thought I would try one of there models. Bought the 1165 because they had good reviews and they were not as clunky/bulky as some of the other ones.I just received these shoes and have put on 15.5 miles in the last couple of days. I have found that at first they were not as comfortable but they seem to be getting more comfortable as I put more miles on. This is different from their running specific shoes as those do not seem to need the break in.In terms of cushioning these shoes are on the firmer side so not as soft as I thought they would be. Not necessarily bad just not what I expected. I am guessing that the firmness might be partly that the outsole blown rubber seems to be harder than on running shoes. The insert and mid sole are forming to my feet so getting more comfortable with each walk.I wear an average width shoe, "D", and my feet a on the narrow side of average. There is plenty of room width and height wise in the toe box for me but if you have a wider foot width might be an issue. Length was fine for me and I did not have problems with needing to go up half a size as mentioned in some of the reviews.Bottom line I would buy this shoe again. I would also check out the 1365 model as it appears to be ground contact EVA so it might be less firm and softer feel.

Very tight fit - supposed to be an EU45 but more like a 43
