Missing washers
The brass hose couplers do not come with washers, which are absolutely necessary. Without washers, the connections leak so badly it is very difficult to maintain flow. Air gets sucked in through a leaky inlet, and as a result the water stops flowing. I wrapped the threads with teflon tape and fashioned washers out of scrap rubber craft foam; now I get good flow, but frankly, art supplies are not ideal for plumbing applications, and I still have a little bit of leakage. I'm taking off one star for not including rubber washers to seal the couplers. This pump is not self-priming. That means it can only pull on liquid. If a bubble of air gets to the inlet (such as through a leak, just sayin') the pump will keep spinning, but water will not move. That is not good for the motor. For my application, I'm using flexible silicone hose, and in order to charge the line I had to suck water through the pump like I was drinking a four foot tall Coke through a Krazy Straw. I installed a check valve ("backflow preventer") to assist with this undignified task. Once the water was all the way through the pump, and the inlet line had no bubbles, I could start the pump and it would keep running. The couplers are good quality brass, and fit 3/8" ID hose. The pump runs quiet, about like a typical aquarium pump.
