Out of the entire batch, there was only a few chips that were not black. And, they were definitely not tan; but rather black with maybe just a little bit of brown or gray in them. 99% were black; which is not what was advertised. I was looking for a variety in the coloring, just as the picture shows. These chips also varied greatly in size. Some were very large, almost 5 inches across and some were 1/4 to 1/2 half inch; there were very little in between. Lastly, they were absolutely filthy. My hands and fingers, and especially under my nails were black. It took extensive scrubbing to get the black dust off. It took a long time for these to arrive, and I was so disappointed.

I wanted to build some retaining walls for my aquarium to separate high planted areas from a low sandy run. This was perfect and I am amazed and also ashamed that I managed to silicone together almost the entire 20lb bag. Sizes range from tiny substrate filler to approx 4", with most around 1-2". Mostly black, very few pieces with what looked like mica that I set aside, as mica will flake up into your aquarium water and look bad. Required a ton of cleaning beforehand for aquarium purposes. I cleaned maybe a pound at a time in a shallow bin, drain, rinse, drain, rinse a handful over the bin, lay out to dry and even then before silicone I would give a wipe clean with rubbing alcohol. Assembling took on puzzlelike qualities since my concern was actually retaining substrate, overall its been 3 weeks and it looks, and is working, great. For taller decor, build it up gradually with curing time between sections so it holds well.All in all, a much better deal than the other slate listings on amazon right now. I did buy one package of 3-5" slate elsewhere which I had to plan carefully about using with this smaller slate, but overall this fit my needs perfectly and saved me from spending a lot more for a lot less.

I was planning to use these to build a miniature waterfall but the majority of the pieces I recieved are tiny. The size was listed as between 1 & 3 inches but about half of the box is maybe 1/4 of an inch at the widest. I got maybe 3 pieces that approached 3 inches at their widest point. Great for other projects I'm sure but not what I needed it for.

Too expensive for what you receive!

Been waiting until my project was finished to write my review. Now finished and I have to tell you that I LOVE the finished look. I replaced white rock with this slate and what a difference. Needed an upgrade after 46 years. I coated them with a concrete gloss spray for a wet look. So happy with the finished look! I would recommend this product.

Received a month late but I received a refund without a fight so I’m not gonna complain about that. However, what did eventually arrive was NOT slate. It was a chalky white gravel. Not a slate gravel- the pieces weren’t flat at all.
