Small is good!
I really enjoy this little Benriner Cook Help Slicer. It's perfect for cutting fine carrot curls for your green salad, thinly slicing an onion, or quickly making a celeriac or beet remoulade. Assuming you're comparing models of spiral slicers, what are the advantages of this one?* It is very small and light and takes only a little bit of cupboard space, maybe a third of the space of one of the horizontal spiralizer models. That's a huge advantage for my small kitchen.* It makes smaller noodles than most: 1x1mm, 3x1mm and 5x1mm. Most spiralizers can't make the very fine curls that this one will. Many will only go down to 2.5x2.5mm or 3x3mm. On the other hand, if you prefer large, thick noodles, go with another model. You'll notice that the thickness is fixed, so even using the large sizing blade, they are fairly thin noodles, rather like linguine. The raw noodles are crisp and crunchy at all sizes. I haven't tried cooking them.* There's less wasted food. Horizontal spiralizers leave a mushroom-shaped core uncut, which is partly to remove seeds that might be in the core. Fine, but what about spiralizing a carrot? With horizontal spiralizers there may not be much left after the core is removed. With the Cook Help, you might end up with some mushed seeds to pick out for seedy vegies, but there is only a small end piece left uncut.* It is very easy to clean. Loosen the thumb screw to pop out the sizing blade if necessary, then rinse the blade and unit under the faucet. Replace the blade, shake the water off and let the unit air dry. With the Cook Help's minimalist shape, there aren't a lot of nooks and crannies to clean. The cutting blade is very sharp, so if something gets jammed there that the faucet spray won't dislodge, it's best use a brush to clean it. Like another reviewer, I use a prescription pill bottle to hold the unused blades; it stores right on the unit in the cupboard.* It's better for the environment because it uses less plastic and you can get a replacement stainless steel slicing blade on Amazon. You don't have to replace the whole unit when, like a knife, the cutting blade eventually gets dull.* The Cook Help won't spiralize a whole zucchini: you'll need to cut it into chunks up to 3" long and 4 ½" in diameter. But it will thinly slice apples or potatoes: core the apples and make a cut through one side (this is what makes individual slices instead of one long spiral). Remove the sizing blade. Then you get thin individual slices for drying, baking, or making potato chips. My favorite use is quickly slicing onions into thin shreds. No tears and very quick to use.

Thinnest spiral cut with no core left behind
Main benefitWhat I like best about this is that the smallest spiral dimension is roughly 1 mm by 1 mm (square cross section) [vs 3 mm square cross section for another product I reviewed]. The spirals can be up to several feet long. At 1 mm square, beets add a nice zip to a dish, whereas at 3 mm square, raw beets tend to dominate the salad with an earthy taste.Additional ProsThe slicer is simple in design, light in weight, easy to use, fairly easy to change the blades, and very easy to clean. The downward direction allows you to push against the countertop. [On horizontal cutters, suction feet are needed to hold the device in place, and even then, I often wish for a third hand to steady the cutter.]You can use the interchangeable blades to slice ribbons 2.4 mm wide or 4 mm wide. Or you can leave out the interchangeable blade and get a spiral with a width equal to the radius of whatever vegetable you are cutting. This device works best with firm root vegetables (carrots, beets, daikon radish etc). It is great for the winter salad recipe from Mod Squad (Vegetarian Times maggazine, Jan/Feb 2013, just g'gle it). In addition to the usual red beet and orange carrot, I like to make thin spirals of yellow and purple rainbow carrots, gold beets, speckled chioga beets -- also full width spiral slices (no interchangeable blade) of watermelon radishes when I can find them. The slicer is also good for making garnishes for soups etc.Vegetables with seeds (cucumber, zucchini etc) can be cut, but may require some extra effort. If you want to leave the seeds aside, it might be better to use a horizontal cutter that leaves a central core uncut.ConsOn the down side, while you can get some variation in the width of the spiral with the different blades, the thickness of the slice remains the same (about 1 mm). So with the 2.4 mm blade, you get a ribbon that is 2.4 mm wide, and about 1 mm thick. It would have been nice to be able to adjust the thickness of the slice. When I want a larger square cross section (e.g. 3mm by 3mm), I need to use a different product. The cost of this item seems rather high for a lightweight polymer frame, 4 metal blades and a crank handle.Tips on usageVegetables must be at least 1 inch in diameter (to engage the 4 centermost prongs) at the top, and can be up to ~4.75 inches in maximum diameter. The section of vegetable being sliced must be no longer than about 3 inches. Out of every 3 inch (or less) length, the slicer will leave ~3/8 inch uncut due to the clearance between the prongs and the center spike. For vegetables up to 2 inches in diameter, the top of the vegetable (that fits against the prongs) should be cut flat in order to fully engage the prongs. For larger vegetables, a flat cut that is at least 2 inches in diameter is needed. Otherwise the prongs can wear a circular groove in the vegetable, at which point the vegetable stops turning even though you are still cranking. The blades are SHARP. Having had a little mishap, I now remove the blade before cleaning instead of trying to clean it with the blade installed.

Piccolo e capace, senza fronzoli

Allerdings muss man größere Gemüse natürlich in passende Stücke schneiden.

Fun to use
Creates lovely noodles of various sizes. Good for disguising vegetables as noodles, my children did not know the difference, when I put in soup instead of pasta noodles!

Salade party!
