Great amp, as the sound is amazing with a sub woofer that will rattle your windows! the surround speakers may be small, but they have a lovely deep sound that fills the room, no matter if its a movie or music your listening to. Its easy to set up and get the settings right........but its not a 5 minute job! it will take time to set it up properly

Not the model shown
The image shows the rear of the HT-R393 which is misleading. That supplied is the HT-R395 which is totally different to the model received. Same issue with the speakers, the finish is not as shown. There are only 4 HDMI inputs on the rear. The good....The quick setup guide and wiring instructions are really easy to follow but aren't detailed enough to get the most out of the system. Instructions are online, but not at Onkyo!Great sound once you've set the system up, however, you'll need to get a copy of the full manual first of all as this isn't supplied. The most important step after connecting everything is on page 12 of the supplied manual - setting up the ARC connection. Much better than my outgoing, eh em, 1,000 watt Panasonic blueray sytem.Unlike others, I have had no issues connecting to a Samsung TV. Simple and straighforward.Sound, lots of setting here (why you need the full manual). Set all TV outputs to PCM, this will allow the amp to decode the signal source and save endless time looking for the best setting. You can choose to connect your equipment to the amp, or just feed in their signals via ARC - up to you.Bluetooth connection really simple to setup, as is the radio. The bad...No standby light!Clearance for cooling - The recommended distances are 20cms left/right and 40cms on top! Placing in a TV stand is a real issue, I can't find a single TV stand with the distance between shelves of more than 22.5cms. I have had to cobble a cooling solution using a computer fan (all sourced from Amazon). The FM connector is not up to the task at hand, so I'm looking for a suitable alternative. This is quite tricky, female connector, male inner.Volume - with the exception of Dolby Pro logic and DTS, the sound is fabulous at any volume. Dolby and DTS need to be at 42 (of 100) to be able to clearly hear vocal dialogue when the source it the TV, or set top box. Sky boxes and Blue ray players suffer a similar issue at volumes of 30 or less. That's all folks, overall really good with a few minor issues.

Such a good surround sound system!!
Fantastic product, especially for the price!!! I hadn't realised it had Bluetooth capability, which was a positive surprise (now, if only the Amazon Music app worked properly... but that's a whole different story...).The incredible amount of HDMI ports is veeeeery useful, set up is intuitive, cables are very colour coded (obviously getting the colours wrong doesn't affect sound, just a matter of using the right length for whichever speakers are placed farthest from the amp).Overall highly recommended!!

A fantastic starter kit
I decided to add a surround sound system to my son's bedroom so that he can take advantage of the DTS-HD soundtracks on the content he watches from our Media Server. I chose the Onkyo kit because I have an Onkyo TX-NR809 Receiver and I have never had a problem with it so this seemed like a great kit to start him off with. When I opened the box there were 3 polystyrene inserts, one containing the Amp, one containing the sub woofer and one has the speakers. In the kit you get colour coded cables of a reasonably decent length to hook up the speakers but depending on the size of your room you may want to get longer cable for the rear speakers.Being familiar with the interface for Onkyo equipment I found the amp very easy to set up and using my iPhone with a sound meter app I balanced the sound output between the speakers. My son's bedroom is about 3m by 3.5m and this amp provides plenty of power to fill that space without having to dial the volume up too high. For the price I just can't get over how feature rich this amp is. I am happy and my son is happy, my neighbours maybe not so much :)

If you get one that works you'll be very happy.
Beautiful looking system and for that it gets 2 stars. I can only base this on my own experience so others may disagree. The first unit delivered had a faulty HDMI connector and was returned for replacement. The second unit worked fine with excellent output quality etc for 3 days, on the fourth it stopped producing any sound at all and started making a huge buzzing sound of it's own. Decided to refund and try another brand.

treble needs to be much better its all bass really even after setting up the adjustment. i need to get speaker stands to appreciate it more may be.the bluetooth side is clunky to connect and the menu system is basic and not very user friendly. For movies awesome but music I mainly use it for and I'm adjusting the sound settings far too much to different types of music which is a pain. At £350 though it's good value really. Sometimes I put it on and love the deep rich bass, other times i want to sell it and start again.

Excellent system
Excellent sound quality, really is a great system and I am very happy with it. The multi-HDMI inputs are great and more than enough for me to run all of my electronics through, sky, PS4 etc..The only issue I have, and this is why I have given 4 stars instead of 5, is that the speaker wires which are intended to connect the rear surround speakers, are too short at 8 metres. I dont have a large front room by any means, but I like my wires to run against the wall/skirting board so they are tidy and tucked away, and they did not reach where I wanted to place my speakers, they were a good 1-2 metres short and I have had to buy extra 10m speaker cables because of this. This is only a minor grumble, the most important aspect is the sound quality which really is superb for movies and music.
