A great firepit
I started out getting a cheap fire bowl at the hardware store. When I say cheap, not the price, about 70 bucks, but flimsy and small.I quickly became hooked on enjoying a fire outdoors, and decided to upgrade.I went with this unit after viewing other landmann products at a bass pro shop. They did not carry this particular one, but the ones they had seemed well built. This firepit rocks!!I have sat out for hours with the temp dropping to 18 degrees here in Missouri. As long as the wind is not heavy, the units cap does a real good job of radiating the heat towards you. It is the perfect level also, height wise, to enjoy the heat, whearas with my low to the ground fire bowl, you would find yourself bending over to catch some heat. Also, with it being high enough, you can easily put your feet under the unit, and get very warm....actually, if the fire is stoked right, you can only do that for a few minutes, as you will get your feet hot. I did this when the weather was below 20 degrees.I have my unit setting on bricks, and the bricks underneath it are warm (not hot)when in use. I can not attest to using on a wood surface, but I would not do that personally. One thing I messed up on. I did not read past the assembly instructions, so I did not realize to put sand in the bottom of the unit. This resulted in the wood grate bending in the shape of the bowl. I called landmann to tell the super nice customer service Lady of my mistake, and wanted to order another one. She told me that she would send me the part, free of charge. She didnt even require I prove my purchase. Amazing customer service, especially for this day and age. I recieved my free replacement grate in 2 days via UPS.I bought tube sand at the hardware store, and that works real good. It is a good thing to buy the sand that way, as I brush up sand a bit with the ashes when I remove them, and replace the sand so it is flush with the grate. A personal note, store the sand tube away from areas that your house cats will find. Damn cats.Assembly was easy. And I am a guy that HATES "some assembly required". My teenage boy and I had it together in about an hour. Had a little trouble with the wheels, until we decided to just not put on that split rubber washer, as it was making it too difficult to keep the wheels straight. That worked out well, this thing is sturdy as can be.The screen is adequate, but sure not good for windy conditions. I went with this unit over the weber, because the weber has no screen at all. (wth weber???) Actually, I guess none of them are good for windy conditions, but I do like the screen in it allows you to view the fire better than if you had a smaller one. However, if you live in windy areas, you could easily buy screening to install yourself onto it. There would be ample area to screw in on to the existing screen without impeding the top cap.I have not used the cooking grate yet, but it is sturdily made, and I am sure I will at some point. My teenage boy, the nieghbor kids, and my stepdaughter made smores one night, and that right there is worth the price I paid.I did buy the cover, that amazon recommended, and it is real nice. I bungee cord it together with the 4 holes in it, and that sucker is not going anywhere. All in all, if you are on the fence about this unit, fear not. It is just awesome. Buy it, assemble it, sit back with the roaring fire, and be glad of your caveman purchase.Me Man. Me make fire. It sure beats watching TV. However, I will be watching the football games today outside with my portable tv, about 40 degrees, fire going, and my cold Hamms beer by my side.Gotta scoot, time to make my kindling with my new friskars hatchet I bought yesterday.

Functional and attractive looking product
It seems to be made well and sturdy, but the assembly instructions left much to be desired. The fire pit looks very attractive and is quite functional, produces a good fire and well distributed warmth all around it. It can be moved around easily on it's two wheels without disturbing the fire logs that are burning. The mesh sides keep the embers contained and leave no mess on the ground. I feel it is the best product of this nature that I have seen and well worth the price.

item was damaged when delivered
The item appears to work well. i have not had a chance to use it yet since it has been so hot where i live, the only issue i had was that the bottom bowl and lid were both dented pretty bad at some point before I recieved it.

A great out door fireplace!
This is the second fireplace I have purchased in the last twenty years. This fireplace was easy to put together, only asked for a little sand at the bottom, and is easy to wheel out of the way when not in use, this was important to us, as we have limited space, without wheels you are scratching your patio whatever the subsurface. It has a good large pit for 18" pieces of wood, we got it good and hot without any meltdown what so ever. The grate fits the grooves fine and the top has a nice keep you from burning yourself handle, When hurricane Irene came by it did not blow away! I know this one with a proper cover will last another twenty years!

Great value and nice design. Well constructed and portable.
This is my first outdoor fireplace. I wanted something that would allow me to enjoy a campfire in my small backyard during the chilly New England fall and winter. This is a nice unit for the price. Well constructed, reasonably easy to assemble, portable, useful and nicely sized. Here's my pro / con rundown:Pros:*Great price compared to other fireplaces*Portable*Doubles as a wood or charcoal bbq - let the coals burn down (or set up charcoal as you would in a bbq) remove spark screen and place cooking grill directly over coals. Downside is that lid does not have vents, so I wouldn't advise covering unless you want to smother the coals and smoke the food.*Easy assembly*Snuffing the coals is a snap - remove the spark screen and place the lid directly on the bottom. The coals are deprived of oxygen and snuff out nicely within minutes.*The unit is tall enough (and wide enough) to accomodate standard firewood logs*Handle on lid stays cool - easy to remove and add wood*Unit is small enough and light enough that it fits in about the same space as a large kettle BBQ.Cons:*The spark screen could be finer - if you're burning resinous wood, you're going to want to keep an eye on popping embers. This could be easily remedied by lining the spark guard with stainless screening or fine mesh hardware cloth.*As mentioned above, the lid and base have no vents, so barbecuing is going to be limited to what you can do over open hot coals. Not a problem if you're cooking hot dogs or hamburgers, but might be challenging if you wanted to do something more complex, like roasting a bird.*The assembly instructions say that the base needs to be lined with sand (ostensibly to protect the metal from corrosion from heat and ash) I used a small bag of vermiculite to provide a heat barrier without adding a lot of weight. So far it seems to work pretty well.*You're going to want to either buy a cover or store this unit under cover as rain is going to be hard on the metal and screen. Treat it like you'd treat a kettle BBQ - it's essentially the same guage steel.Overall I really like my fireplace. It's a great value.

Great product and excellent service
The new Landmann came quicker than expected. It came with very comprehensive instructions, if I can put it together anyone can. We had one that was over 30 years old and was wearing out. This one is not as heavy as the old one and I don't expect it to last as long but it still seems to be a good buy. I would recommend it and as a first time buyer with amazon.ca I recommend them as well. Still a great product and totally hassle free shipping.
