Great 70's classic horror film.
I loved this movie since I was a kid. The music and the actors were all so amazing..

A movie with horror and humor as well as a glimpse into black culture.
One of my favorite movies. a Dracula infused movie but with that Blaxploitation feel to it. William Marshall is perfect in the role.

Black Dracula
This movie must be consumed knowing that it's a low budget "B" movie with high exploitation ("blacksploitation") aspirations. This movie was a real treat for African Americans to see in it's day because its taken the European Dracula love story and put a twist on it with a creative story line. Where this movie fails is the dated and sometimes off putting dialogue, lighting, and weird camera angles. It's pretty bad and to be honest, these are the toughest areas for "B" movies to excel in. The make-up effects were especially bad, but to be completely fair, all of the Dracula / vampire movies at the time were done with the same kind of terrible make-up which means that filmmakers have learned better make-up techniques over the years to our benefit. With all of it's flaws, still adore this movie for it's romantic story. I always leave this movie wishing there was a longer and more gradual romantic seduction between Blacula and his lady since that was the main point of the story. The acting is great especially on the part of William Marshall who plays the title role. He is excellent. The supporting cast is pretty good as well, but Thalmus Rasulala stands out as the doctor trying to solve Blacula's string of murders.

Not too bad
The credits were too long at the end. (10 seconds ;p)

70"s horror memory lane
The advertisements on the television for this movie were truly horrifying for many of us youngsters who loved to be scared by horror movies. The title Blacula has always brought back to me those days of old when I could really be scared by the cinema. But upon rewatching this classic I'm not sure that it holds up to our inspection quite the way it used to. There are a lot of fine performances here by actors that should have seen more involvement in main stream cinema. But we first have to acknowledge that this is a Samuel Z. Arkoff production. And so, in this movie, we find ourselves having to sit through long interludes of meaningless filler, waiting for the action to finally explode. In the end, Blacula is worth a watch for it's historic cinematic moment....it got a lot of attention upon it's release, but it will probably come up a bit short in your recollection of it's first appearance.

I highly recommend this film because it is pure fun and great ...
I highly recommend this film because it is pure fun and great to show during Halloween. I see this film as a historical classic in Black Cinema under the heading of Blaxploitation films. Although I saw this film when it was originally released, I forgot how much fun it was and like many frowned my nose at it during that time. Recently I decided to purchase it and introduce it to the youngsters in my family. The response? It was an instant hit.As a bit of film history, both William Marshall and Vonetta McGee are starring in leading roles. William Marshall who was an excellent opera singer and accomplished Shakespearean actor, was best known for his roles in Blacula and Scream Blacula Scream. These two Horror movies or so-called Blaxploitation films were introduced during the 70's era. Lovely Vonetta McGee who was as well known for her beauty as she well as her starring roles in several blaxploitation films (i.e., Blacula, Hammer, Melinda, Shaft in Africa and 1974's Thomasine & Bushrod. Now they are released as a double feature called Soul Cinema, where Blacula and Scream Blacula Scream can be purchased together.

Waste of potential
I heard good things about this movie, but I just don't see it. The only good things about it are Mamuwalde (sp? AKA Blackula), his rivalry with the doctor, and his love for Tina/Luva. The Mamuwalde actor (sorry I've already forgotten his name😢) carries the entire movie on his shoulders; none of the others were well-directed (or they weren't bringing their A-game). The only one who comes close is the doctor, and even he reacts kinda flat sometimes. There was so much potential - a prince who came to protest slavery only to become a vampire could have used his new powers for social justice or to get revenge on Dracula, but nah, his violence is mostly black on black. We could have had an interesting stranger-in-a-strange-land story, but nah, he instantly takes phones and photographs and cars in stride. We don't even get the classic vampire rules - Blackula goes several places uninvited. Also, the movie was slooooow. Maybe ppl in the 70s just had more patience. Even the final scene takes ages to unfold. Finally, it may come across as insensitive, what with the almost non-existent racial tension between the cops and the POC.It wasn't terrible, and I think it was made with love instead of just a desire for cash, but I just can't recommend it.

Blacktation
