What the World War II-era film 'Air Force' is to the skies, 'Destination Tokyo' is to the seas. In the only military-action film he made during the war, Cary Grant plays Captain Cassidy of the U.S. submarine 'Copperfin', skippering his torpedo-laden thunderfish with courage and resourcefulness as it makes its battle-strewn way from San Francisco to the Aleutians and into the enemy's front yard. Under the trim, taut direction of Delmer Daves (his directorial debut), John Garfield leads a stellar array of co-stars as boys-next-door gone to war. "One of the most rousing, action-filled WWII films ever produced with a powerful cast and terrific story 'Destination Tokyo' remains a classic war drama to this day" (The Motion Picture Guide). ABOUT THE DVD: This is a release by WARNER HOME VIDEO for the UK market (Region 2 PAL format - which will play on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Europe - buyers outside of Europe will need a multi-region player in order to view it) - The film is presented in its original BLACK & WHITE and FULL SCREEN format (1.37:1 aspect ratio) and runs for a total of 129 minutes - the AUDIO is the original ENGLISH language and MONO - SUBTITLES are in English, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Hungarian and Arabic (there are also hard-of-hearing subs for English language only) - SPECIAL FEATURES are a wartime short film 'Gem of the Ocean' and a Cary Grant Trailer Gallery.

PROPOGANDER
A FINE EXAMPLE OF MORALE BOOSTING, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP LOYALTY ARE ALL INVOLVED IN THIS TALE. SMALTSY BUT ALL PUT TOGETHER WELL. SET AND STAGING VERY WELL RECREATED. CARY GRANT IS, AS USUAL, RELAXED AND GIVES A BELEVABLE PERFORMANCE. ALAN HALE IS THE COMIC RELIEF AND THE DEFINITE LINE BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES IS PORTRAYED WELL. YOU BECOME IMMERSED WITH CARING WHAT HAPPENS. IN ALL A WELL THOUGHT THROUGH FILM.

Up Periscope!
A good war-time "Flag waver".Cary Grant was loaned out by Columbia to Warners to make this submarine film .In .return they got Humphrey Bogart to star In Sahara in return.I like submarine films and this is a good one....shot in black and white with good special effects for the time.Cary grant made only one war film during world War 2 and this this is it..whilst this is a good actioner and reasonable sub-plot you can see why he did not make more.On a few occasions he strjkes an " heroic pose...ok in civilian comedies or thrillers but ...he looks just a shade "camp" compared with say Bogart or Cagney. and well just a bit too "well manicured"

OK but corny.
This was made during the war and a positive spin was a must for morale but the depiction of the submarine crew is so ‘Gee, aw shucks fellas’ that after half an hour of unrelenting smiley ‘nice guys’ it starts to grate. The film is over two hours long and it takes the best part of two hours to really get going and show some action but I can imagine audiences across America lapping this up at the time so I suppose it does the job it was meant to.

Another good film from the great director of action films Delmer Daves
Great film, great acting, good plot. Grant is very convincing and the minor characters at times try to steal the film. Delmer Daves does not get enough credit for the films he has directed. His films always have a good script and photography, especially the westerns he has directed - equal to Henry Hathaway in my opinion. Amazon also needs to provide two related submarine movies as well. William Holden in Submarine Command and John Ford's Submarine Patrol with Richard Greene. Also William Holden in Force Of Arms.
