Can the light be used with a timer? In other words, when the timer turns the power off/on does the light come on and remember the previous setting?

Yes. I have mine set up on my Alexa and on the timer.

Is this tank safe for shrimp?

yes, but I would slip fine netting over the plastic grates where water flows out of the tank to filter, to prevent shrimp from getting pulled out. It's really a nice tank.

How strong is the light, I plan to use it as a planted aquarium. What type of plants would be ok as is it? Is it low, medium or high light?

There’s actually several light setting on this fluvual allowing you to go from bright light, to a variance of medium lights to low light. There is also a night setting with a blue light, a thunderstorm setting and a rainbow of lights including red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple; that you can set at high, medium or low light. There is also a light cycled for the rainbow of lights that will fade from one to another. I use this tank as a aquascaping tank with a few fish. My plants with the right water conditions continue to thrive and grow.
