Mamut Web Standard (PC CD)

I have reviewed this item before and it was later removed, without explanation. So briefly, again, I'd like to recommend to anyone looking at this software to avoid it. There are many reasons. Firstly, it's too expensive for what you get from it. There are other web-builder software programmes around which are much cheaper and get you a webpage that looks just as good or better. This is primarily an e-commerce package, and it allows you to set up a transaction system accordingly. Again, other packages do it as good or better and for less. Don't think that because it's more costly that it's a "higher-end" package. As far as website creation goes, I've seen software that does what most people want for less than £100. Shop around.

Unlike most software where you just click past the terms and conditions without reaidng them (as it's all legal mumbo jumbo), I urge you to read the Mamut agreement.Basically you sign up to an annual charge or monthly rent, the cost of which is on their website somewhere (try and find it, I challenge you). This useful fact is on page 4 of their small print in English (page 33 of the PDF).[...]None of this is in the amazon description.We're used to reoccuring subscriptions with Anti-Virus type software but it is always plain and clear. This is hidden and sneaky, in which case I cannot recommend.

Not sure what to make of this package....it took an age to install the components..and by the end of it I'd run out of ehthuasm.Another reviewer mentioned the price of this which is an issue....I'm reviewing from review copy..so not for me.It is a lot to spend on something which may..or may not be what you are looking for...and taht may or may not do the job you want it to do.Templates for web sites are ok to a degree...but I've seen some pretty cheesy looking ones which allow little scope for personalisation..and I think I prefer creating my own stamp on them first.

I disagree with some of the other reviews which seem to be based mostly on what the outside of the packaging looks like. Have the other reviewers actually spent any time building a website using the software or taken the time to find the comprehensive pdf user manuals stored on the CD? I think not. Seems like they are cases of judge first, use it never!I have spent about 10 hours building my website, after installing the software on my office PC (takes about 30 minutes but my PC is slow and old and runs on Windows XP Professional).Using the excellent user guides which I printed from the installation CD (be warned, they run to about 250+ pages but are very comprehensive) I have not only designed and created a home page, but have also created numerous sub-pages and a webshop.I have no previous experience of designing and building a website, but found the registering of the software easy and I am using the evaluation/demo mode at the moment whilst I build up the pages because I don't want it live on the web while I am still working on it.The templates provided are excellent and allow you to view your website build so far in a selection of styles and fonts and layouts to match what you want your website look like. The colour schemes are all customisable as are your fonts and alignments etc.It is very easy to copy images across from your hard drive and add text etc. You can hyperlink to any other screen very easily and it is possible to insert scripts for things like webcounters. I want to see if I can insert a Google map and embed video from YouTube, which I hope is possible, but I haven't quite got to that stage yet.The Webshop is easy to set up and manage stock levels and allows you to accept CC payments (or to invoice for cheque payments if you prefer) and there is also an option to link through to WorldPay. As I am still using the evaluation version I have not tried this yet though it promises to be easy and starightforward.This software is primarily designed for use as an e-commerce tool, but my main reason for using this software was to allow me to build a social/interest site rather than as a business tool. It has adapted to my needs suprisingly well, though I am sure there are probably other software pacakges more specifically designed for using to build a social website.Overall, very pleased with the results of my website so far and looking forard to going live!

After installing (with no major issues) I proceeded to play with this software. To be fair I am impressed. Despite a rather functional appearance I can't really fault this software package. It is quite straightforward to use and allows you to create a decent looking website. Templates are available to work from and these are, in the main, really quite impressive. For those who are starting or interested in starting a web based business with the desire to display your products or services and be able to receive payment I would suggest considering this software package. It is reasonably well priced when you consider what you will be using it for and it also offers 1 year of support which is sure to be handy. I was impressed with what I was able to create after just a few hours of trying. I suspect that with a really dedicated effort I could create something really quite good. Unless you have Dreamweaver and have the time to dedicate to creating a website from complete scratch this Mamut package does offer some really interesting benefits. Like everything, you have to give and take but I like it.
