Wonderful classic
I had not watched this old French classic for many years but decided to revisit during lockdown. It did not disappoint and for over an hour, I was transported into a sad but enchanting tale of un-neighbourly behaviour against a new family settling in the community. Although set in the heat of Provence, the film resonated with current times in UK.

Engaging and truthful, a reference in the genre
I immediatly connected with the main characters and their struggle. These are served by remarkable actors of their respective generations. One doesn't need to travel abroad to find a srikingly different mentality and lifestyle. This appears in full blow here as the straightforward, ambitious, somewhat naive and dreamy city dweller (Depardieu) tries to realise a long term goal of building a farm in a small village in the south of France. He finds himself against the manipulative and conservative patriarch of the village (Montand). The initial plot is simple but immersive as the characters grow with their environment and the seasons in a beautiful landscape which peaceful appareance hides dark plots fomented by the patriarch and his son. It is not simply a story of the good, the bad and the ugly as each character remains complex with his deeply human side and whose point of view can be understood from the local culture they grew up with.

An Excellent Film
Who cannot enjoy such an excellent film as this. Full of typical French understatement the acting is superb and the story very true tolife. There are many hidden messages in this film and although it is in French, iy is still worth a look. Try also its sequel Manon des Sources which is in the same mould.

A fantastic French sub-titled film - must be seen with the second film "Manon de la Source".
A fantastic French sub-titled film - must be seen with the second film "Manon de la Source" - watch them back-to-back if you can. A story of French peasants, miss-understanding, love and death, with great music (Verdi) set in sunny rural Southern France... what more could you want!Taken from a classic French novel, with four of the greatest French actors. A film that has haunted me since I first saw it many years ago.

Excellent service and value.
I only paid £1.92 for a copy of Jean de Florette. It arrived promptly and well packaged. I thought it was faulty at first and asked for a replacement. One was sent with a pre paid envelope to return the 'faulty' one but I later realised it had been a fault on our dvd player rather than a fault with the dvd. After a bit of a mix up, Westcott issued a refund for the replacement I had sent back. They told me to just keep it.The film is very good. I don't know if it's true to the book because I haven't read it yet. Good listening practice for my French class and exceptional value for money.

Great film if you love the south of France!
I love Marcel Pagnol's books, having read 'Le Château de ma mère' many years ago for A level French. The two films made from that series are a joy to watch, so choosing 'Jean de Florette' as a follow up seemed like good idea, and it did not disappoint.I am now looking forward to watching 'Manon des sources'!
