Workshop workhorse
Purchased for its flattening ability with the straight spin & 40 or 60 grit sandpaper. Nice & powerful, large pad & good dust collection. Despite its weight, I find the balance fine with two-handed operation. I hadn't envisioned needing the random orbital mode but it's excellent at this too, so my smaller Bosch has seen little use since I got it. The Bosch is handier but this is quicker, so why not make use of it?!

Awesome
Not a cheap tool, but this really is a serious bit of kit and of the build quality you would expect from Makita. Only gripe (and I have seen this so often with Makita tools) its the thumb operated on/off switch. When the tool was brand new and out of the box, a gentle press down at the back of the button caused it to cut off instantly. Later, as dust accumulated and gets into the work parts - and this is a sander so to be expected - it stopped releasing, meaning that I now have a powerful machine running at some speed which I can't put down and have to somehow remove my right glove in order to get my thumb under the switch to flick it up and cut the machine out. This really is bad feature on a 750W machine spinning at 5000 rpm. Makita need to think through the safety aspect better. In use, the machine is faultless and massively powerful. In forces rotation mode with 40 grit paper it will take of old finishes with ease. With finer grit on free orbit mode the finish is superb. Electronic speed control is good and so much power it is virtually impossible to overload the tool.

Seriously powerful and smooth running tool
A very powerful but controllable sander.Really good for removing layers of lacquer from floors, stairs and doors - truly impressive. It feels well balanced and when combined with a great dust extraction system, delivers practically dust free sanding.I recommend this tool for anyone needing to remove serious amounts of paint or varnish.

Essential!
Fantastic sander from a trusty brand. Couldn’t be happier with it. Takes only a few goes to get the hang of it. Light enough to use for extended periods. Results are brilliant, after a light fill and sand with this, walls look superb.

Best ROS on the market
Work in the trade and i have used a lot of sanding machines over the years, right now i own 4 random orbital sanders and this one is hands down the best, personally i much prefer it and rate it over the rotex, i think makita has went out to beat the rotex with this machine and they have done it, dust collection is brilliant, vibration is minimal. Its is a pleasure to use..how often can you say that about a sander?Makita seems to have thought of everything with this machine, The hose (27mm) from my festool vac fits perfect and there's no chance of it working itself off,, the machine has the same type of hook and loop backing pad as the festool that makes changing the sanding disk easy while never slipping off .In fixed orbit mode its exactly what you want an aggressive machine that will remove material rapid while still collecting the dust, in random orbital mode you will get a finish that perfect for 99% of user's even if it is a 5mm orbitthinking about buying it? to my mind right now this is the best random orbital sander on the market

Not happy with this as the rubber protection on top has started to peel away
