This ExtremeRate kit totally revived my battered old DSi. The “Great Wave” print is stunningly detailed and feels premium. Installation took some patience, but the guides were clear and all the pieces fit together perfectly. It feels solid, the buttons click nicely, and it genuinely looks like a special edition console now. A fantastic, satisfying project for any nostalgic gamer.

This shell fits excellent. One must follow all the steps correctly and replace everything in order to get it to actually close back up, but this shell fits the best of any of the after market I’ve tried. Other reviews say the provided screws strip easily, this is true. I found it better to save and reuse the screws from your donor console. I also recommend using your own tools. It can be tricky to replace the cover on the top screen and correctly remove the border on the bottom but these are necessary to get it to fit right. The riskiest part is definitely getting the top screen out from and back into its housing as the ribbon cable is delicate. If you do everything properly you can get excellent results. Things I forgot and had to add back in later: the plastic piece that goes in the power LED slot, the metal piece that goes behind the battery cover so the cover has something to screw to, removing the bottom screen border, reseating the wifi antenna cable near the charging port so the case fits proper. If you’re comfortable with teardown and reassembly this is a great mod.

Pros: Looks good Comes with all needed hardware Glad options are available for such an old device. Not too hard to assemble for an average person. Cons: The finish on the famicom version is matte. The bottom cover feels like it was just printed and then airbrushed. Fingerprint magnet and I can see how grease from fingers could wear it in some spots where your touching it. Also much harder to wipe clean than a glossy finish would be or something with a clear coat over it. Not a perfect fit. I didn't have any real trouble with fitment but it's slightly warped when assembled. Not really noticeable unless your looking for it but it's especially pronounced on the gap between the screen hinge and the bottom shell in the back. The screw holes are just printed plastic pop ups with a hole. The quality of the plastic isn't terrible but not something like an original da case. If you only assemble the unit once you won't have any issues and it will be snug if you tighten correctly. However, if you end up having to take it apart a few times it will likely wear out quickly. Other thoughts Overall it really does look nice and I'm super glad somebody is still taking the time to make and sell these replacement shells. Taking the old da shell apart is super quick with no problems. Be careful with the bottom screen especially when removing the old covers. There's no housing outline for the bottom screen with this but it doesn't look bad at all with the indent around the bottom screen. When routing the cables for the mic and wifi I chose to bring them both across the top of the board rather than using the channels under the board on the bottom shell because I found it nearly impossible to get the cable properly under there and in the right place, the channel is also very tight and seems to almost strip the cable. It's possible to carefully route it under the card slot instead but it seemed to get stuck for me and took a while so be careful if you do that. The screen ribbon cables aren't too touch to work with and get connected but the digitizer cable was a NIGHTMARE for me with larger fingers. I found it really tough to hold the bottom screen and board and get the cable into place and clipped down. Between removing the bottom screen cover outline piece and trying to get it bend and plugged in I broke the original digitizer, ordered a replacement and it took was difficult to work with but I got it in and the bottom screen is basically brand new now so I'm happy with it. The top plastic screen cover is VERY fragile. Just running a fingernail across it to try to wipe off dust on the outside when using it causes permanent scratches in it. Honestly my biggest gripe about the whole thing is already having several scratch marks on the top screen after using it for a week. Can be replaced pretty easily so not the end of the world but still annoying.

Item is wonderful and true to the Extremerate name, I will say this specific one did come out the box with a slight defect or scratch on the top shell, It happens but overall I’m happy with it!! It’s very simple to put on and the fit is nearly 1-1.

It looks good, figuring out how to install it wasn’t too crazy. Reason for the 3 stars is just the fit of it. It is manageable but would be better if it had the exact dimensions of the original case for easy install

Changing out the shell wasn’t as hard as I thought, but there are some things to note for anyone wanting to attempt this as a fun project. 1. The screen is a bit tough to center perfectly but negligible if it’s slightly off. 2. Watch the whole installation video at least once beforehand, I got a bit ahead of myself and had to redo a few parts. 3. I’ve seen some reviews that say the parts aren’t “flush” and don’t quite fit but this isn’t the case, you need to really tighten the screws so the parts all come together nice and tight. Before you put in screws it will look like it’s not quite fitting, and if you don’t tighten them enough they won’t be “flush” 4. This is an aftermarket shell and as such there are slight differences in their measurements which means that it may not fit in protective cases made specifically for the DS lite. 5. IMPORTANT** The Y screws that come with the kit are the only thing that I would say were a bit lower in quality. I’d assume this is because Nintendo has some sort of patent on them or because they’re hard to source. I HIGHLY suggest anyone doing this project keep the Y screws from their original console while shell swapping as the ones included in the kit either strip easy or seem to not catch the screwdriver at all. With that being said I’m very happy with the quality of the parts and I’m thrilled they included some extras of certain easy to lose parts like springs and screws. The only complaint that I can think of is the Y screws that come in with it I think it’d be easier if Xtremerate simply included regular screws that fit in the same locations.

Be sure to follow a tutorial on YouTube, there are lots of little tricks to shell swapping a DS Lite. As long as you do, this mod isn't too hard to do and the result is pretty great. I have a thin gap near the charging port on mine but other than that, the shell fits perfectly. If you have scratches on your top screen, this kit will resolve that issue as it comes with a new top screen lens but if your bottom screen has scratches. You'll need to order a new digitizer too- these are cheap though and just a couple extra steps in installation. Overall. If you want a custom shell for your DS, this is the best choice, imo.

The assembly was absolutely terrible; so terrible, in fact, that my system is now more broken than it was before I ordered this, and I can't even fix it again because the adhesive is so strong that I can't remove the top screen without tearing it apart. Maybe if assembly was more intuitive or they actually came with an instruction booklet instead of a "Here's our website" booklet, it could've gone well, but nooooo.

Not perfect, but definitely a highg quailty replacement case that will give you a bespoke finish to your DS. Not for the feint hearted, make sure you know what you are up against before you take the plunge!

Ho acquistato questa scocca di ricambio per dare nuova vita al mio vecchio DS Lite e devo dire che sono rimasto davvero soddisfatto. La qualità della plastica è ottima: solida, resistente e con una finitura liscia che sembra quasi quella originale. I tagli sono precisi, quindi tutte le parti combaciano perfettamente, senza scricchiolii o giochi strani. Il kit è completo di tutto: cover superiore e inferiore, pulsanti, lente protettiva per lo schermo, stilo, viti e persino gli strumenti necessari per il montaggio. Non ho dovuto acquistare nulla a parte. I colori sono vividi e fedeli alle foto — io ho scelto una versione cangiante e l’effetto è spettacolare! Il montaggio richiede un po’ di pazienza, ma con il video guida ufficiale è stato tutto più semplice. Alla fine il mio DS Lite sembra appena uscito dalla scatola… anzi, meglio, perché ora è unico e personalizzato. Se vuoi rinnovare la tua console o darle un tocco personale, questa cover è un acquisto consigliatissimo. Rapporto qualità-prezzo eccellente e risultato finale che vale ogni minuto speso per l’installazione.
