Useful book to keep in the car
In an age of sat navs, the road atlas is less used than before, but it's still useful to have one for emergencies, or for more speculative journeys. This one is well laid out with the main maps at 3 miles to 1 inch. It has several other useful maps, including restricted motorway junctions, urban approach plans for Glasgow, Birmingham, London and Manchester, and a further 11 city plans. There's also a complete map of motorway service areas. Overall, a useful book to keep in the car.

Map or sat nav?
Map or sat nav? - the perennial argument on our trips. I like the tech, my wife likes the paper. She says this is just the right size and level of detail for planning a trip (or challenging the sat nav!) An atlas can't beat Google Maps or proprietary sat navs for street level detail but I do agree that a convenient size and scale of atlas like this is easier for the overview of a journey or planning diversions for a break. This size and binding is just right for use on the lap in the car.

An essential item for every car.
When your phone battery dies, and you still need a map, this is the book for you.In this day and age it is easy to take having a map for granted. It won't get used often, but when it does it will be a life saver. The book won't provide sufficient detail to help you with the last mile of your journey, but it will help you get to the city or town you are looking for on those long and unfamiliar journeys!

Essentially useful road atlas
Despite everything being GPS and internet led there is still a place for books and sometimes sat navs do let us down . This road atlas is clear and a good size with spiral binding so theres no risk of creases and tears across the most important bit of the map! Yes useful and does the job!?

From A to B and back again...
It's funny how, even with satnav in almost every smartphone and so many cars, we still have a use for a good road atlas and this Philips Essential version is a pretty good one. The size is just right, basically each map page is A4 plus an allowance for the spiral binding and the binding means you can fold it back on itself and have something that's easy to hold or sit on your lap. The spiral binding means there's quite a big gutter between pages but Philips have split the maps so there's virtually no overlap from the left page to the right, which makes it relatively straightforward to trace your route as it jumps across a double-page spread. The 1:200000 scale of most of the maps is also just about right although in more remote and less-populated areas of the UK, like the Scottish Highlands, the maps are to a less detailed scale. For driving cross-country they're great and you can pick out your routes clearly, but inevitably as you approach major conurbations there's a tendency for confusing map spaghetti and it gets increasingly difficult to track your route. To help with this there are more detailed maps of the approaches to four cities; Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London, and they're indispensable if you need to navigate those areas. There are also a selection of around 30 small city-centre maps but some of these are so small, printed 2 or even 4 to a page, that they're only helpful in locating the major streets, great if you're on a shopping trip but not much else. There's a route planner at the front of the book showing which double-page spread you can find each section of the UK on and at the back is an extensive index so you can locate individual towns.Inevitably when you get into urban areas the atlas becomes much less helpful and you'll either want an A-to-Z of that particular city or you could switch to a satnav device and get the greater detail you need from there. However, it's still a really useful thing to help get you from A-to-B and this version seems pretty much up-to-date. The price seems more than fair and of course it's just the right size for that pocket in the back of the front seats.

Well structured and informative
Nice clear layout and with the spiral binding I don't have the usual problem of navigating to somewhere that is actually hidden behind a staple or difficult to see in the crease...
