Fascinating autobiography
I can't remember when I first discovered Dr. Paul Ekman-I suspect it was probably from reading the body language book 'What every BODY is saying' by Joe Navarro (which is excellent) or from watching the television series 'Lie to me'. Although Lie to me was a fictional show it was based on the work of Dr. Ekman and he consulted on the television series. The only book by Dr. Ekman which I have read prior to his autobiography is 'Emotions revealed' but after reading his autobiography I intend to read all of his other published works. I find body language and micro-expressions fascinating because they are universal and they can really give you good insights into other human beings when you are interacting with them. I'm not an expert in this area but just from reading the aforementioned books and watching Lie to me, I have become much more aware of the body language of not only the people I interact with but people on television as well-particularly news readers and people being interviewed.Something which really fascinates me is learning the stories behind pioneers such as Dr. Ekman-what inspired them to get involved in this line of work? where did their ideas come from? what challenges did they face and how did they overcome the obstacles in their way? For anyone who has watched the television series Lie to me, it was interesting to see the parallels between Dr. Ekman and Cal Lightman. For instance, I was unaware that Dr' Ekman's mother had committed suicide and this was one of the key story lines in Lie to me.The book covers every aspect of Dr Ekman's life from the early beginnings to his military service, academic career, visits to the Soviet Union, saint busting and his friendship with the Dalai Lama. If you are already familiar with Dr Ekman's work or you have an interest in body language/micro-expressions then this book is a must read. If you enjoy a good autobiography then this is one of the most interesting I have read.

Inspiring
I am a computer scientist, and I have been interested in learning to recognize non-verbal cues; my ability to do so has improved by reading Dr. Ekman's work. But the biggest lesson I gained from this book is this: If one has a passion for exploring something--like Dr. Ekman has for studying emotions--that person can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in life as Dr. Ekman has done.

Extraordinary
Extraordinary book! I thought it would be more like an autobiography, but it is really a very insightful book. I recommend it!
