Torture and torment or eternal salvation?
Fabulous. She is a scientist and cannot explain who or why she fell ill and now suffers from a blood disorder. When she is attacked by people claiming to be hunters and told she is a hunter and has to die. She manages to escape and flee. He has been imprisoned and tortured for years, now at the end of his life he can suddenly feel new hope surging through him. Will they meet? Will he survive? Will she? An absolutely fantastic read about another race who need blood to survive. They also need their soul mate or they turn to the dark and start killing indiscriminately as a vampire. Wonderful plot, terrific characters - what more do you need. I have the hard copy that I bought when this first came out, unfortunately all my re-creating has meant that it is now falling apart and so had to get a new copy.

Next Installment
Takes place approximately 25 years after Dark Prince and is the story of the prince's brother Jacques and his lifemate. We find out more about the humans hunting the Carpathians and about some of the other characters that will have their stories told in future books. Jacques is a very different character to how he was in the first book after years of torture and Shea finds herself drawn into the Carpathian world. With her scientific background you know that she will have a part to play in the future of the species in later books.

I love the whole series
I love the whole series, the heroes are always good looking and manly and the heroines are always quiet witty and can hold their own. It's a book with many twist and turns, some books I like to read in one sitting but this one is better to read over the course of perhaps a week. The writer does her best with keeping the readers engaged in the story, good historical information is given about the places visited something I also enjoyed. It's a book that will hold your interest from start to finish and one I could recommend to everyone that's into Sci Fi and alternative stories.

Jacques - a favorite
Having read every single Carpathian story by Christine Feehan so far (Dark Slayer being the latest) I am now enjoying the whole series in order for the second time, and one I've looked forward to most is Dark Desire. When we first met Jacques in Dark Prince he came accross as one of the more light-hearted and young-at-heart characters, with no vampire hunting experience. Despite loosing eomotion and colour, he could still show humour in some things, which was what made him so endearing.Howevr in Dark Desire, which is approximately 23 years later (calculated by the death of his sister which happened around the same time his lifemate was born, and references to Raven's time as a Carpathian) much has happened to him to change him from the man he was. He has studied and grown in power, which is exceptional given his lineage. But he has been betrayed, captured, brutally tortured and buried alive, and is living a nightmare. His only focus through his pain is on one woman, he doesn't know who she is but can connect to her and judges her by what he see's. Using thier telepathic ability to draw humans to them he calls for her and she comes from across oceans, drawn inexplicably to the Carpathian Mountains. She is Shea O'Halloran, a brilliant surgeon and with a strong will and much compassion, despite the awful upbringing she endured. This story is so much more intense than Dark Prince, the threat to the couple coming from human and vampire alike. The love scenes are hot and steamy. Jacques character, even in his damaged state is just as desireable as Mikhail was in Dark Prince, and probably more endeering because we knew who he was before and we feel for what he has endured. This book and Jacques are among my top five Carpathian males/stories, probably coming second only to Gregori (Dark Magic) and even with Lucian (Dark Guardian)

Hang in the magic happens in the only way she can express it!
This book has no of the fantasy romance, just harsh reality with a twist of course. Having read a lot of series this one seemed to take a while to get hot but when it does it's all more sweeter.not the best in series definitely worth a read .but the next 2 books are in another league.

... the first couple of chapters it's a quick and easy read.
Takes a bit more getting into than the first one but once you get through the first couple of chapters it's a quick and easy read.

Just when I think she cant possibly do another amazing read she brings it out of the bag
Totally thrilling and highly sensual and emotional. The Dark series by christine Feehan will have you on the endge of your seat with every read. Despite the sheer number if books in the series the stories are all uniquely individual. Just when I think she cant possibly do another amazing read she brings it out of the bag. No two reads are the same.

Anticlimactic paired with male chauvinism
The female characters are:- irresponsible- spineless- easily manipulated- naiveThe male characters are:- discriminating (AND blaming it on culture, ugh)- hypocitical- narrow-mindedThe plot is:- simple (also, the antagonist's plan is super simple sven though the characters treat it like a masterplan to conquering the world or something)- after all, basically no different than the plot from the first installment- disappointing (guess that's my own opinion but I expected more)This book got me riled frequently because of its ever-present sexism and the very bad "explanation" for it. The males don't care about understanding the women (maybe Carpathians are just uncapable of empathizing with women above the bare minimum that is necessary for interaction and love-making). I give it two stars because there were some pretty good scenes in the book (which in the end got my hopes up, only to have them destroyed shortly after).Thank you for the headache.

fast forward
That is the best way I can describe how this series progresses. In volume 1 we have met the first couple, Mikhail and Raven. Then we have nothing and now in volume 2 we have been - at the beginning - forwarded 18 years and then again 7 years. So a total of 25 years fast forwarded. As in volume 1 we have read that Mikhail uses a computer for work that is "really big", we have to assume it was the late 80's or early 90's. Fast forward and we are in the 2000's.One can only hope the series does not forward quite as quickly in the following volumes as this would make this love-story a sci-fi-story.At the beginning we meet Shea O'Halloran, a brilliant doctor. She is plagued by what she thinks are nightmares but are in fact Carpathian communication-attempts. When she follows them, she ends up helping the Carpathians, in particular Jacques, who turns out to be the one for her.One problem: Raven, the protagonist from volume 1, is said to be only 25 years old. As we have forwarded 25 years and Raven was not just born then, this is very confusing.

It's great.
I read the Dark Carpathian 1 and honestly, hate it. Then I left some time past and read a review that said the rest of the series is great. I'm glad I returned. This book tells the story of Jacques, Mikhail's youngest brother and Shea, a genius Doctor... him I love, her, not so much. The story is very interesting and well written, i kind of figured out who the bad was like past half, which is good. It's not as predictable as other series and again it kept my attention from start to finish. I've already bought the next two books in the series.C. C.

Loved it!!
I loved Shea & Jacques story! I loved the fact that they both had to overcome some very big issues to come together as lifemates! I also loved reading more about Raven & Mikhail! I can't wait to read the love story of their daughter. I really didn't like Rand & thought he was way to selfish by squandering his opportunity to have a great life with his lifemate & children.

It was ok
I was disappointed based on the reviews. I thought the story meandered.

This series gets old very fast
This is the most recent (and last) book of the series I've read (I have been reading it out of order). I find myself beyond sick of reading about women who are such strong characters as the book starts, but as soon as they meet their "lifemates" oversexed idiots who can't do anything except think about and/or have sex with the guy they just met. Dear God in heaven! I know Ms. Feehan can write stories with strong female characters because she has, but in her Carpathians books, those seem to be the exceptions to the rule. Its gotten so bad in the last few books that I just threw one across the room. The sex scenes, for me, are not sexy or exciting. The last couple Books they've just been creepy. A guy with a God complex and a girl who never/can't day no - creepy! Also, A good author would be able to write about two people meeting, falling in love and then getting married. A marginal author uses the stupidity of a "Magical/mystical Bond" to force the two main characters together without wasting time building any kind of relationship. This not only takes away from the readers investment into the story, but it also takes away any belief, at all, that anything is going to happen except that the two main characters are going to get together (and have sex, and more sex and more sex, etc....) This is now going to be the second authour I will no longer read and both of them used this idiotic piece of crap plot point.Do yourself a favor - Don't waste your time on these books. They are not worth the time and money you'll waste.****I gave it one point for the story idea and one point for the few books in the series worth a crap***

Okay, but could have been much better
I am late to the party concerning the Dark Carpathian series, but I am enjoying it so far (I'm only two books into this, though). With this story, I really liked Jacques and Shea and thought they made a great couple. The story wasn't as good as it could have been, though, because far too much of it initially focused on Jacques' near-insanity and Shea (and then Mikhail, Gregori, and Raven) trying to deal with him. About the first half of the book was taken up in this way, and there was really no focus on the relationship between Jacques and Shea. Despite his initial mental problems, he recognized Shea as his lifemate, but they couldn't go about forming any semblance of a normal relationship because of the circumstances.I feel like this book would have been stronger, more effective, and more enjoyable if Jacques' issues had been dealt with in more of a retrospective kind of way. The poor guy simply had too much to try to deal with for all of that to be taking place during the story. Because of his immense baggage, and the fact that he had literally just gotten out of that hellish ordeal, there was no way that he and Shea were going to be able to do anything but be thrown together in sheer desperation. This doesn't exactly make for the most romantic of stories. There were some interesting twists and turns in this one, and those did help to keep the overall story line interesting. We were left hanging, though, in terms of what happened with Raven as well as Byron, though I'm assuming that they both recovered.

Gritty and intense. Tormened hero and heroine work together to right the wrongs of the past, and in process healing each other.
My favorite book in the "Dark" Carpathian long, long, never ending series. This book I read stand alone. I enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend this gritty, emotional and gripping paranormal love story. In my opinion the best story in the series!!!********CAUTION POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD> PLEASE STOP NOW IF YOU DON"T WANT READ ANY SPOILERS>THANKS**********Hero is imprisoned by vampire hunters into a coffin where he can't heal himself but is in torment with wounds given by hunters. He is literally suffering unimaginable pain with no end in sight. Heroine is half vampire and doesn't even know it. Her human mother was mate to a full fledge vampire that mated with her but married another. Without full mating her mother slowly lost her will to live and died in sorrow. This torments heroine as she tries find cure for her "blood disease" and also try protect herself from pain she raised seeing her mother in.Heroine starts having these dreams and hearing this voice in her head telling her to come to this far away country to save a man locked up in a coffin. She thinks she is going crazy, so it takes her years before she finally does go. She is being hunted by these hunters as well and must be careful about getting caught. She finally saves hero, but his half mad! He recognizes heroine but mistreats her without realizing it. He goes crazy if she is not near him, extremely jealous and possessive, and can't remember anything past his salvation (the heroine). Since she is also a doctor she works to heal him and end his torment. However, she doesn't know how to heal a vampire but a human so process is slow.Eventually, hero's family finds him and comes to visit. He goes mad and almost kills them all. Heroine is able to calm him and get him to reason. He allows them to help them both heal. In process they found out about what heroine is and educate her. She realizes she is hero's mate and who her father is. Hero pushes his family away and tells them he still needs to heal but appreciates their help. He allows them to help him to a point before he takes heroine away to secrete undercover cave. Have I mention how mad he is and possessive? Do to his torment he can't be far from her or have many near her.Heroine's father has his own secrets that place everyone in danger. Hero finds out who orchestrated his capture and years of torture. Heroine finds out what drove her mother crazy and who she is. Hero must fight his demons and become the vampire-man heroine needs to protect them all from these hunters and master villain. The final show down is well written scene in which hero gets his revenge on the super villain. The ending was sweet. This imperfect hero, with PTSD, still needs to heal but heroine pledges to be by his side through it all. It ends with HFN as hero and heroine recognize they need to still heal, but they also realize they have all time in the world to do it together. Really, very sweet tormented couple. Hero was heroine's first and the love scenes were sweet. Beware this read can be gritty and intense at times. Beautiful love story.

Great Read
Shea O'Halloran is a renowned surgeon dedicated to researching the odd affliction she was born with. Pursued by an extremist group she finds herself entangled with the man that has haunted her mind for years. Jacques has been cruelly imprisoned and left for dead. His desire for revenge and telepathic connection with Shea are the only things fueling his will to live. Dark Desire is the second book in the Dark Series.Dark Desire can be read as a stand alone book and is a sequel to Dark Prince. It takes place about 25 years after Dark Prince and recounts the more pivotal events relevant to the characters.Dark Desire is one of my favorite books in the Dark Series. I loved Jacques' character in Dark Prince but he is a drastically different character in Dark Desire. The couple's connection and attraction has a darker intensity. I really enjoyed how the story explored the mental instability and codependency issues that events in the book brought about.I love Shea's character and she always stands out to me compared to the other female leads in the series. I enjoyed reading how her modern medical knowledge clashed but also merged with the more mystical Carpathian form of healing.I like how polished this story feels compared to Dark Prince. There is more action and character development. I felt it was an amazing sequel. I love that Dark Desire shows how small events and decisions from the first book greatly impacted the story line.

3.5-stars - 'Dark Desire' by Christine Feehan
I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to continue reading this series since there are a lot of books in this series and it would take me a while to get caught up. I’m beyond imitated with how many books are in this series, but I’m determined to get through them eventually.I’m also not sure if I like this series. I’m not sure if it’s due to the characters or the writing style, but it’s much different from other books I’ve read before. I’m hoping the books get better along the way, but I’m going to take my time getting to them since I have a lot more books to read that need to be reviewed. Don’t get me wrong I love the idea that the Carpathians are no vampires in this book, and they are trying to save their race by finding their fated mates. If they don’t find their mates than that is when they turn into vampires. What I mean with vampires is that they are dark and vicious and not sparkly.I find the male protagonists very alpha in this series. They tend to be over-bearing and controlling males though that drive me bonkers at times. Jacques, though in this book, has a reason to be since his fated mate doesn’t understand their kind and puts herself in danger certain times. Shea is a surgeon, and she wants to help people, but she’s also trying to figure out what is wrong with her at the beginning of the story. She ends up helping Jacques because he has been tortured by some humans for being Carpathian. He’s close to dying in the book, but the Carpathians can prevent it by putting themselves to sleep and healing in the ground. Shea is about to meet Jacques for the first time and realize that he has been damaged so severely that his dark side may end up showing up in the book a couple of times. Jacques is not an easy Carpathian to deal with, but neither is Shea. Shea is going to find out right away that the Carpathians have a different way than humans. She’s not going to like it, especially when she meets the healer, Gregori. Gregori is one character I want to know more of, especially since he’s close to turning. In this book, though he may end up finding his mate, he will have to wait around for his mate a little longer.I enjoyed the plot and villain in this story more than the first book. The first book was everywhere, while this one stayed on a course more with the story. There was more of telepathy talking in this book more than actually talking with the characters. Jacques was healing in this book and everyone thought he was dead, even his brother. There’s a storyline with Shea, which I won’t give away, but it’s what kept me reading this book. I wanted to know if she would finally get her HEA after everything she went through in life with her mother and father.I will say that I enjoyed this book more than the first book. I’m hoping to read the third book next month and I hope each book gets better and better. It may be Christine’s writing style that is taking me a while to get used to since I’m used to certain writing styles in the PNR genre. I enjoy alpha male characters, but these characters can be to the extreme. Although, I should sympathize since they are trying to prevent their kind from going extinct and also going mad like a vampire.Story Rating: 3.5 starsSteaminess Rating: 3 starsStandalone or part of series: Part of series.Do I recommend this book? Yes. If you are a fan of PNR with REAL vampires and not sparkly ones. 😉Will I read other books from the author? Yes. I’ve already read other books from Christine Feehan. I’m enjoying her Shadow Rider series.Tropes/Elements: Fated MatesHero: Tortured/Damaged; Carpathian; AlphaHeroine: Doctor/Surgeon; Half-Carpathian; Determined, but Jacques would state she’s stubborn and Gregori would say she’s being dangerous.
