Readable history at its best
A lucid, fluently written account of the great Mughal emperors, covering all aspects of life. Even such aspects for non specialists as the economy and administration are explained comprehensibly, with interesting anecdotes and examples, particularly of the corruption that was all pervasive, and almost certainly the principal cause of decline and collapse. The splendour and opulence of the Mughal court and the the magnificent palaces and mausoleums the emperors built are described in fascinating detail. It would be hard to find a more readable account of what to many is a relatively unknown period of history. Even the cover is a graceful reflection of the contents.

Fantastic history of Mughal India
This is a fantastic book and to understand Mughul India it is really the best book that you could purchase. This book brings history to life and reading it while travelling in India in February 2010 was like traveling back in time. The other book to purchase in conjunction with this is "The Mughal Throne" which deals with the rulers of the period, where they came from and what happened during their reign. A great book that also deserves 5 stars. Each of the two books deals with exactly what the title refers to. One deals with the life of India while the other deals with the daily life of the people. Eraly has researched widely and his references are well documented. If you love the history of India you will love this book. We need more historians like Eraly that make history a pleasure to read !
