Transparency from an Experienced Water Filtration Business
The Waterdrop Black Filters, asserted by the seller to be an optional replacement for Berkey’s BB9-2 filters, have the same physical appearance of the Berkey BB9-2, and so should fit all systems that Berkey’s filter does. These systems are listed on the Waterdrops PoP page. There are many Black Filters now available that market themselves as low-cost replacements for Berkeys BB9-2 filters, and do in fact, just like the Waterdrop filters, look and fit the same. But looks are deceiving, as are many of the marketing claims being made. The water we drink has a considerable impact on our health, and consequently, the quality of our life. The point I’m making is that when deciding on water filtration, for example replacement filters, transparency is paramount; e.g., are the filters certified or at least tested to a known standard and by who? Is there a searchable, legitimate business that stands behind the filter, and more specifically, the water you’ll be drinking? Is the seller experienced in the water filtration business? The answer to all of these questions, where Waterdrop is concerned, is yes. And for that reason, I feel confident in the quality of their filters and their associated assertions as to their performance. Waterdrop is specific in their claims.According to Waterdrop, their Black Filters are not certified be NSF/ANSI, but by an international cooperative signatory organization, the IAPMO, the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials. The IAPMO sets testing standards that the signatories, for example Waterdrop, agree to maintain. Waterdrop filters are not officially certified by the NSF/ANSI, but neither are Berkey’s. Waterdrop plainly states that the IAPMO has tested and certified their filters to standards that match and NSF/ANSI rating of 42 and 372.As a reference, according to the NSF and ANSI rating agencies, a filter with an NSF/ANSI 42 rating means that it will eliminate Chlorine, taste and odor, maybe chloramine, particulate, iron, manganese, zinc and reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) to a level not exceeding 500 mg/L. This standard establishes minimum requirements for systems designed to reduce non-health-related contaminants. In other words, filters with a 42 rating should make for clear, tasty drinking water and the removal of some contaminants. The 372 rating certifies that the filters remove lead.Berkey claims that their black BB9-2 filters, that are independently lab tested, exceed an NSF/ANSI rating of 53. Filters certified to have a 53 rating are those that eliminate health-related-contaminants such as bacteria, VCO’s, and viruses; these are important distinctions and why filters that may look exactly alike, may have far different performance standards. It’s important that a buyer understands their needs and chooses appropriately. That said, Waterdrop has been transparent about what to expect from their filters, and even prints those standards on their PoP page. But to be specific, based on their assertion that the filters meet an NSF/ANSI 42 standard, means they are appropriate for household use and civic water sources. They are not suitable for filtering water from an unknown source, for example a river or stream, or in some cases, even well water. If the Waterdrop Black Replacement Filters represent a standard of filtration that will fit your needs, they appear to be a viable and cost-effective replacement for Berkey or any other filtration system they may fit. A much more expensive Berkey filter may exceed your standard of need. As I’ve emphasized here, it’s up to the buyer to be clear as to what those needs may be.

Replacement filter for Berkley Water Filtration System
Love these filters that fit my Berkeley water system perfectly. Easy to install and seem to be high quality. They look identical to the filters that came when I bought the system. They are a great value and easy to find since there seems to be a shortage in finding Berkeley filters.
