having a much better outcome. Those guys were tough back then
Maybe the Kindle Edition is a ripoff but the actual book is outstanding. It is a "must read" for anyone who is interested in hunting and the outdoors especially in Yukon and Alaska. Once I start this book I could not put it down. It was fascinating. My Grandpa took the same hunting trip the very next year (1920) with Charles Baxter, having a much better outcome. Those guys were tough back then.

Awesome!
I've read countless books, and often read these reviews online, but until now I've never posted one myself.I was quite surprised to find a limited number of reviews on this book, as I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it and expected it to have similar response as Shackleton's Endurance, Alaskas Wolf Man or other true stories of epic proportions.I'm not sure if it was the details of the tale, or the style of writing that is so appealing, but it's an absolute pleasure to read. If you like true stories of survival mixed with history I cannot recommend it enough.

One of the best survival stories of all time.
This book is a cult classic among Alaska guides and hunters. A horse pack trip into the early Alaska and Yukon wilderness turns into an epic survival tale. This hard-to-find book is for anyone who loves and respects the north country and the challenges faced by early hunters.

The good ole days in the far northwest.....
I certainly can't speak for him, but I'd be shocked if the modern day sporting artist "Brett Smith" didn't read this book many times. It certainly appears to me that many of his incredible paintings were inspired by the very adventures described in this great book! If you've read it and love it as much as I do, go to Brett Smith's website and check out his hunting and fishing paintings! You'll swear you're going to buy several of his "prints"...... Untill you find out how much he charges for them....... And I really can't blame him, as his paintings are every bit the masterpiece that this book is!

Heck of a hunt.
Very interesting story of how hunting in the remote areas of Alaska and Yukon territory took place decades ago (1940s). No mention of an airplane or a telescopic sight in the entire book. Another aspect is that today persons of lesser means can hunt such places, then, few people would have had the money and time, not to mention the physical and mental stamina, to carry out an expedition such as is described here.

Exciting tale of Alaskana.
Fabulous story. Edge of the seat reading in the second half. I read a lot of Alaskana and this is one of the best.
