Mystery Alaska [DVD]

This is an off beat comedy with a feel good factor that never fails to bring a smile to my face. Mystery is a small town in Alaska, far from the bustle of the big cities and the main distraction in town are the Saturday games, weekly ice hockey matches played by the ragtag local team on the frozen pond. Well, these games and fornication. When one local boy who has left the town and made it big in the world of sports writing returns home and announces that he can bring a professional team, the NY Rangers, to play the local boys on their pond, the excitement in town is huge. The players are keen to demonstrate their skating skills in front of the TV cameras when the day comes, and the local dignitaries see a chance to promote their town. When the big day arrives, you get one of those hugely enjoyable underdogs meet superstars events.It's all good fun with plenty of quirky characters providing many laugh out loud moments. Russell Crowe is rather hunky (in a man of the great North fashion) and eminently likable as the local Sheriff and ageing hockey player promoted (or should that be demoted?) to team coach. Burt Reynolds is the uptight local judge who won't allow any talk about hockey and a scene stealing Colm Meaney is the crafty local mayor keen on putting his town on the map.Great fun family film for a rainy Sunday afternoon - just as long as you're good with strong language and references to sex (there is quite a bit of both, which is presumable the reason for the somewhat harsh 15 rating). But hey, this is first and foremost a film about a hockey team, and boys will be boys. Highly recommended if you're looking for something to lift the spirits without being terribly inspirational or syrupy sweet.Picture and sound quality of the DVD are good. Subtitles are available for those who may need them. No extra features.

This is a really delightful, gently comic film. If you are a Russell Crowe fan all well and good, but the ensemble cast make it so much more than just a vehicle for the main star! There are some genuinely laugh out loud moments and you really don't have to be a big fan of ice hickey to get something from the film! It has to be one of my all time favourites and often gets a re-watch. As it is available so cheaply, it is really worth the risk: I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this. I rarely bother to write reviews but I wanted to spread the word!!

this is Russell Crowe before he got an attitude and an Oscar. it is a light comedy with hockey thrown in for good measure. it is an easy watch and definitely worth your time. not a five star but more than a three. if you are after some giggles, some sporty men and a drama thrown in for good measure you could do much worse.

First at all that Amazon have this item in the market with we dont have here in Sweden.And that the film have the subtitle in my language.And it only took a couple a days from UK to Gothenburg to get the item.The film is awesome.

I purchased this for a present for someone who loves ice hockey, they had seen the film before but were made up with having it on dvd.Once ordered the service was quick and prompt and recieved in perfect conditoin.wold highly recommend the seller.

Easy watching

it was exactly what I wanted but unfortunately it is not compatible with my dvd player so I passed it onto to a friend who loved it.my fault entirely.

This is A Cracking,feel good comedy with great performances especially from the Wonderful Burt Reynolds.worth A look.
