Laser only shines abouy 1', am i doing something wrong?

NO, the lasers that mid ten sends out are vastly underpowered unless you are using them in a very low light envirronment which is kinda expected for a laser by itself under $200. Midten scopes are a great value for hte money I have owned 2and they have phenomenal customer service. My first one had a slightly canted reticle and when i contacted them they sent me a new scope right away to correct the issue. I have had the same issues with the two lasers that have come with my scope, you will get more use out of playing with your dog or cat. Unless you get the opportunity to shoot in a low light environment but I had a hell of a time getting them to come close to cowitnessing with my scope or coming anywhere close

What is the minimum yards this scope will focus to?

the focus in adjustable. I just installed on new rifle and have not tried it out yet. but just playing around with it before mounting it. I could focus it clearly at 25 feet at the highest magnification.

Will this scope work on a shotgun

Yes it should work if your shotgun has a dovetail rail in the rear.
