Motion Sensor: V-990 has a built-in motion sensor. When motion is detected, it can be awakened immediately; when it is static or has lost satellite signal for over 5 minutes, it will automatically enter standby state to maximally save energy. An ordinary GPS data logger will still work after the vehicle stops; in such case, it will consume more energy and produce unwanted way points data. V-990 adopts a motion sensor, so it can automatically enter standby state after the vehicle is static for a certain period of time; once the vehicle start-up or motion is detected, it will immediately be activated and continue to work. The intelligent working mode will greatly facilitate your daily trip. Data Logging: As a data logger able to work independently, V-990 can record the most detailed GPS information available currently, including date, time, longitude, latitude, speed, height, heading, voice, positioning mode, positioning type, PDOP, HDOP and VDOP. Geo Tagging: You may integrate photos taken with any camera and tracks of V-990 to share wonderful travel with your relatives and friends on the map*. V-990 can also support GPS information added to digital photos. * Third-party map software, such as Google map, Google earth and Panoramio. Voice Tag: You may notice that it is a unique feature of V-990. V-990 has the function of voice recording, and you can record voice label for POI with the separate record key. As you play back travel track on the map, you can hear voice segments reflecting your personal feeling, convenient and very interesting. The voice label function is especially suitable for voice remarks when collected data is investigated. One key POI: You may, during use, manually mark POI (Point of interest) at any time. In playback track, there will be a unique green flag indicating this POI. The manual marking function is especially suitable for the purpose of investigating collected data. As Mouse GPS: V-990 may also be used as a wired GPS (G-Mouse)* navigator.

Piece of junk; Company has no desire to support their product
The device worked great for four months, and now it skips days. For most months, it only records points for five or ten partial days. Instead of leaving it on all of the time, I've tried turning it off when it would otherwise be idle. I've tried formatting the card. I've tried replacing the card (since these only work with non-standard 4GB cards, I had to specifically order more). It doesn't make a difference. When I sent a message for an RMA, they ignored me for a week until they finally responded after I CC'd sales and marketing. When I unsuccessfully tried formatting, as they requested, I gave it several weeks for testing and they then ignored me for two weeks once I determined that the steps had made no difference. In principle, it worked great, but I either got a bad one or the hardware is not durable, and the lack of any desire for the company to make it right means that this device is now just junk. I haven't been able to use it for months. This was the original review, now revoked:Device works exactly as expectedVery high resolution. Records every second but pauses when idle. When the device senses motion, it wakes back up. Warm starts are very quick. It beeps when it acquires. The USB is just for charging and doesn't provide any data. The data format on the SD card is a Columbus-specific format, which gpsbabel can convert to any of the other formats you might want to use. No problems with the battery charge. Pressing the button beeps and records a point. It has a special entry type in the data-logs (obviously), so it's easy to identify them later.WARNING: The device only supports 4GB micro-SD cards formatted with FAT (not FAT32). Apparently you can only buy those online nowadata. Example: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SMVQK8

Be careful with power saving motion detection mode
The unit will loose tracking information if it runs out of power while it's in power saving mode with motion detection. This will not happen if this option is turned off and the unit powers down properly before the battery is dead. It would be nice if the gps closed current file before it goes to sleep and created new file each time it wakes up. In general this gps works ok.

Works as expected
This is a very sensitive receiver. I am generally able to log the GPS track from the window seat of a commercial airline.

Worked solid in my trip to Yosemite, while another GPS unit lost a few sections. The included software is not very powerful but it's simple enough so that everything can be done after converting the logs into generic formats.

Good kit
A good device. I use it here in the UK for biological recording. I've had two of them now without too many problems (except that I lost one!). Some people I know have had problems with the recording sound quality and, sometimes, I've suffered this myself with voice tags being clipped or otherwise distorted. I use free biological recording software - [...] - to process the sound and CSV files to make biological records.
