Works well enough
The bags are not that great. Some of the valves work but some of them don't. But, that was not the reason I bought this. I use it, with an attachment to vacuseal mason jars. For that it works pretty well! I also use it just to take extra air out of regular plastic bags. Solid buy for the price...if you don't care about the bags it comes with.

Just received the pack mate vacu-seal in the mail today ...
Just received the pack mate vacu-seal in the mail today, very, very disappointing. Problem all the batteries were corroded, clean the battery compartment, hoping that it would work with new batteries. The vacu-seal did not work therefore it will be mail back. Perhaps the company should not put the batteries in the unit.

Only dislike is that it needs 6 AA batteries to operate
It does what it says it does, haven't had it very long, but it seals Bell jars well with an adaptor. So far none have lost their seal. Only dislike is that it needs 6 AA batteries to operate.

Very pleased with this purchase
I recently purchased the starter kit after seeing a youtube explain how to use the vacu-seal unit with the foodsaver jar sealer. So I bought both the starter kit and the jar sealer and I'm very, very pleased. The vacu-seal seals the mason jars perfectly. I've also experimented with using the vacu-seal bag, and so far after 24 hours, it's holding its seal just fine in the freezer. However, the bags are way too expensive for me, so I experimented with using the vacu-seal bag as a chamber to seal other much less expensive ziploc bags. I only received the medium size bags, so the quart bags have to be pushed in to fit. Of course I don't have the ziploc bags full -- I use them to seal single-servings of meals I prepare for the freezer. I started the zipper a bit, and after using the vacu-seal to get out as much air as possible, and while the vacu-seal bag is still sealed, I run my fingers along the ziploc in the ziploc bag. Then I remove the ziploc bag and quickly make sure it's tightly sealed. I've gotten some pretty good vacuums that way. However, I think it would work much better if I had the larger bag to use for the vacuum, so I found a bag of 7 on eBay and ordered them tonite. Expensive for 7 bags, but I will only use them as chambers to seal other much less expensive bags. I've sealed about a dozen jars and about a dozen bags so far and am very, very pleased that I do not have to buy an expensive vacuum sealer. Thank you Packmate.

Poor Man's Vacuum Sealer
I read the horror stories about the batteries leaking upon arrival. When I opened my package, the battery cover and 6 loose batteries were laying at the bottom of the package. The battery cover is sub par and comes off a little to easy. The batteries that came with the vacusealer died before I sealed my first jar. I strongly recommend using a couple extra dollars and buy the clear vacuum hose they list as an option. While trying to vacuum seal a jar the sealer itself had a hard time staying leak proof. Thankfully I thought ahead and bought the hose, it works perfect then.

Nice but I'm not doing cartwheels
I previously used the Reynolds® Handi-Vac Vacuum Sealer - Vacuum Sealing System Starter Kit with Handy Vac Freezer Bags and Batteries and was so disappointed that I threw it in the garbage and gave it a one star review.I have since purchased this product and I'm somewhat more pleased. The product itself is great but the bags do not live up to their promise. The problem with the Handi-Vac was that it was too hard to line up the suction head with the hole in the bag. It was a struggle to get them lined up and working properly meanwhile wasting battery power. Their bags were advertised as re-usable but I could never get them to vaccum the 2nd time around. The Packmate suction system is easy to line up and use and works perfectly. The unit is powerful enough to get the air out quickly thus saving battery power and it really pulls all the air out.I can't give this product 5 stars because I found that first, the bags are really expensive and even though they are re-usable, they are a pain to wash and dry. I'm also concerned about food safety so I'm going to try and wash them in the dishwasher to sanitize them better. Secondly, I only gave 3 stars because I found that some of the bags are not holding the vacuum. I get into my freezer every few days and re-vacuum the air out of all the bags. I'm not sure if they just weren't sealed properly to begin with, if the cold air somehow changes the properties of the bag so that it pops open or if there are tiny punctures that have a slow leak. Whatever the case, they all start out properly vacuumed, the bag sucked in and tightly wrapped around the food, the entire bag as solid as a brick, then slowly re-inflate when stored.I've only seen this in the freezer. I haven't tested it outside yet. I will update the review when I do.
