Bards sing tales of heroes from ages past, but never have the Forgotten Realms so desperately needed a champion. Years have passed since the war between Luskan and Neverwinter, almost enough time for the wounds of war to heal. But the brief peace the Realms have known may be at an end. Tension growing between the mighty city-states means the Sword Coast again teeters on the edge of open war. Unnoticed, a greater danger stalks the City of Skilled Hands. Unbeknownst to the denizens of the North, deep in the Mere of Dead Men, dark forces from across the Realms have been rallied under the banner of a legendary evil. If left unchallenged, all of the North is doomed to fall under its power. Even in this darkest hour, hope remains. A mysterious relic is borne to Never winter in the hands of a lone hero so that its secrets may be unlocked - secrets that carry the fate of all the North. So begins an epic tale of shattered alliances, noble acts and dark deeds to be told across the Realms for generations to come. Not perfect, but then nor was the original:
Neverwinter Nights was a decent RPG. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Anyone that spent any time playing it knows that in comparison to Knights of The Old Republic and the older Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale games it really left something to be desired.Neverwinter Nights 2 is a decent RPG. It isn't great, but it isn't bad. Anyone that spent any time playing it knows that in comparison to Knights of The Old Republic and the older Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale games it really left something to be desired. Now that the obvious is stated, lets pick up on the issues with the game:1 - the pre-patched game is slow, and very poorly optimised for most rigs. Patching has improved the performance of the game - but it's far from perfect.2 - AI remains solidly poor. Not so much the badguys, but definitely your teammates - who make playing by the old PvP rules very dangerous given their propensity to throw fireballs into combat.3 - the plot is ye old hackneyed storyline. Meandering, occasionally fun, but not very fulfilling (so, much like Neverwinter Nights).4 - the community support is lacking, typically because the above issues turned away so many. Now for some positives:1 - it's pretty, the sound is good, the music remains excellent...but this is because much of this is directly transferred from Neverwinter Nights.2 - the gameplay remains solid, even if the controls have become less intuitive.3 - it's a good length, with plenty of variety, and lots of subplots and sidemissions to keep you active (and an entire subplot to give you something to do other than kill Goblins).4 - voice acting is great, NPC's are interesting, and decisions matter - although the forced limit on the number of NPC's accompanying you is the first thing I would recommend "tweaking".5 - the setpiece combat is much much better than NWN and more time has been taken to make the game truly scalable in difficulty (unlike NWN's slide into despairing munchkin type twink battles pitting 2 guys vs entire armies of supervillains - dispatched as easily as ever). The game is now 3 years old as I write this review, and I have owned it since the day it came out and played it through in its entireity 4 or 5 times. In comparison I have never completed NWN, or any of the expansions, because of the cheese factor I felt you were forced to undertake unreasonably soon into the game. The expansion of your "party" and the more communal feeling I think is more conducive to an enjoyable singleplayer experience, particularly with the much stronger NPC component in this installment. As a final note: Mask of the Betrayer, the expansion, improves on many of the issues and provides a far more satisfying experience. MoTB effectively delivers a far more solid plot, storyline and well developed visuals and sounds worth playing through NWN2 just to continue on with your hero or heroine.

The necessary patches to run this game are no longer available
I remember this being a good game. However, buying it again in 2015 I've found there's no longer any support online so the patches can't download. I've been in various forums to find out what to do but they all involve a lot of faffing around and a lot of stuff I'd struggle to understand as a reasonably intelligent person who doesn't know anything about coding. This is probably why I can't access the 'game creator' function which was the reason I bought it again in the first place. Very disappointed.

A good game but the original was better
I hesitated for years to buy this game because I wasn't certain if my AMD Turion 64 x 2 laptop would be fast enough to run it. Consulting as many websites as I could I eventually decided to give it a go. Apart from it taking a long time to load, the game itself runs lovely. I like the graphics and the game play, of the controls I sometimes have a little bit of trouble getting the camera angle as I want it, but maybe that's just me and not the controls themselves. I prefer the story of the original NWN, but maybe this one will grow on me.

Very disappointed after NWN
Twee and slow with horrible dialogue and a dull quest-line.

Good Value for Money
Easy to pickup when exploring the different realm of Dungeons and Dragons through the solid campaign, with interesting characters. But the game truly shines with its multiplayer capabilities. From action to role play servers there are a multitude of worlds to visit and a stable community to populate them.
