Does anyone know if this works with ubuntu 14.04?

No! The "real" TP-WN725N will, but these (thought advertised as a WN725N) are "NOT" the WN725N, but are made by Archer, and they don't work with LINUX, Ubuntu or LINUX Mint. If you get a real TP-WN725N and plug it in, it will work right out of the box!!

What is this for? Why would one need it if their laptop already does wifi?

I'm about 5 years behind this question and the comments :), but I can tell you that I have a 17.5" Acer 1TB laptop that is less than 18 months old, and I called to have my wireless modem replaced by Xfinity because I was only getting download speeds of about 100 - 112 when my service is supposed to deliver 250+ Mbps. But when we checked my cell phone, it showed 300 Mbps from the same router, and the tech said that my wireless card in this laptop cannot accomodate more than the 112 Mbps I've been getting! He said he's seen brand new high-end laptops with wireless cards that can't detect of connect with a 5G network like Xfinity's is. Maybe because of cost and the fact that probably a large % of people don't have service faster that 100 Mbps or so. So I haven't tried one yet, but most are in the $16 - $19 range. The top-rated (4,300 reviews averaging 4+ stars) is about $37, and that gets you 1,600 Mbps!! Hope this helps....

Will this work with Windows 10?

I have Windows 10 and received a version 1 (V1) adapter from Amazon. The TP-Link driver downloads do not offer a Windows 10 download for V1; however, there is a Windows 10 download for V2 and V3. I tried to install the V2 and V3 driver anyway, and although it installed, I only get 2-5Mbs down and about 4-5Mbs up. Same speeds for what Windows 10 auto detects and installs as Realtek RTL8188EU. I am in an adjacent room to my wireless router, through one wall and about 15 feet away. I have no idea why Amazon would still ship hardware that is not compatible with Windows 10. I’m only out a few bucks, so no big loss other than it being a hassle.

When held, it doesnt give off that cheap and flimsy product-like feeling. It is good sturdy with its build quality.Packaging:This part is also a big plus as the item was well cushioned and packaged with all the necessary items that ensured that no damage could have been caused to the product during transportation. This ensures that I as a customer have received something not damaged internally already.Software:This is actually good but not great part with the product.The good part is that a CD has been provided with it along with a manual.The not great part is that NO LINUX SUPPORT has been given from Version 2 onwards. This is bad, really.Speed:It easily supports net speeds upto 300 Mbps. Practically speaking, I have tested it at my home and it easily supports net speed of over 100-150 Mbps without a sigh.On testing I found that it did connect to 5GHz network, without any issue.Connectivity:Please mark its not feet its metres. Multiply metres x 3 to get the distance in feet.It easily connects to my laptop or phone from 7 metres across one room. So thats 21 feet. I mean even our old bluetooth used to connect to about 15 ft.So 20-25 feet is not at all an issue with this. This is the big plus I found with the product.Experience:From this point of view, so far except the linux non-compatibility issue, I found no other flaws with this product.So overall its a great product.Warranty:Its 3 years so I am assured that atleast for 3 years I am tension-free and not just 1 year, contrary to most electronic items today that only provide 1 year warranty with their items.

Reliable solution for weak laptop Wi-Fi signal.

Mere laptop ka internal Wi-Fi signal kaafi weak ho gaya tha. Jaise hi main dusre room me jaata tha, connection bar‑bar drop ho jaata tha aur kaam karna mushkil ho jata tha. Mujhe laga shayad ab laptop repair karwana padega, but then I ordered this TP-Link product.Aur honestly, it worked perfectly! ✅ Ab even dusre rooms me bhi Wi-Fi connection stable aur strong hai, speed bhi bilkul proper mil rahi hai. Plug & play setup tha, koi extra headache nahi.Overall, ye product ek simple aur effective solution hai un sab ke liye jinke laptops me Wi-Fi range problem ho rahi hai. Definitely recommend karta hoon.

FYI - Read this fully if you are looking to buy.

At first, it worked great. There were nothing to complain about it. But now, a few days after the purchase- I am experiencing many issues.• Slow• Barely keeping up with normal activities (youtube, browsing)• Random ping spikes during any activity• Averaging 1.3k ping while playing any gameWorst of all, There are no replacement or return window."10 day Service Center replacement"- 5 days after purchasing, looking to replace, but there are no options.Redirected to a help page to improve the speed instead.Do not purchase.I reccomend going to the nearest laptop or phone service center/mechanic shop. They have these wifi dongles, purchase it there. Don't bother buying these stuff online.Also, not to mention -This dongle isn't compatible with 5G wifiOnly works with 2.4Ghz and 4GThis was a bad purchase.
