As good as they claim
I’ve had to deal with Window units on and off over the last 40 years, some pretty new and some built in the early Sixties (they are REALLY heavy), but I will say this is the nicest I’ve used. But expectations are everything, if you think it will be a miracle machine you may be disappointed. But if you like good industrial design, care how it looks, and love the idea of controlling with your phone, I think you’ll be pretty happy with it. It was easy to unpack, easy to install (with really clear instructions), didn’t require anything not in the box to install (yes, it really does come with scissors to cut the side panels. If you think that’s ridiculous you haven’t been around people under 30 much lately), it’s powerful, and has a great App. I don’t want to pick on anyone else’s review, everyone has their own pain points and expectations, and yours may not be met: no product can be perfect for everyone. But I think it’s a good, well made, and quiet unit, that looks nice and does pretty much what they say it will. The “Inverter” that comes with the WhisperTech just means that the compressor is variable speed; unlike the old units we dealt with that only ran at full blast, this guy will speed up and slow down depending on how much cooling is needed. This can cause the unit to rattle on startup, or make noises when it’s changing speed that people aren’t used to associating with AC units and they assume it’s a flaw. It’s really just a temporary side-effect of a great feature: variable speed means it’s quieter and uses less energy just keeping your room cold than it uses to get it cold in the first place. This is a good thing. I don’t leave a lot of reviews, and this product doesn’t really need any help, it has a great star rating already. But I do see a fair number of one star, “Just don’t buy it!” reviews that are based on things like it broke after a week or the filter isn’t a HEPA filter and that makes the whole thing useless, where they are not reviewing the unit itself, but rather their disappointment that it failed in one specific thing that they hate (it doesn’t say it has a HEPA filter—you may want one but that’s not a flaw in the unit). Just read the description they gave it, and strip out all the shiny phrases and exclamation points marketing put in, and decide if the product they describe is what you want. As I said way at the top, before we all got old reading this review: it’s as good as they say it is. I think most people will enjoy it and think it was worth the money. Enjoy the rest of the reviews!

I purchased the 8,000 BTU with WhisperTech and it's been a game-changer for our first summer in NYC
For reference, I live in a 750 sq foot, 1-bed walk-up apartment on the third floor. I could ramble on about this AC, so I chunked out my take-a-ways: Features: Sleek and Planet-Friendly. It's a far cry from the bulky window units I've had in the past — Passed down from my parents'' house and so on. The smart controls are intuitive and easy to navigate. My favorite feature is how quiet it is - We sometimes forget it's on. Coming from someone who lives in NYC with constant noise outside, it is lovely to have one less appliance that adds to it. Performance: We live in an old NYC walk-up apartment, and this AC has made the record-high summer temperatures bearable. The dual air intake feature is a nice touch. I've noticed that the air is distributed well across the room, which is always a plus. Emergy Bill: Compared to our energy bills with past units, this hasn't increased ours and seems super efficient. They have a program called EcoRewards, where you adjust your temperature at certain times (to help decrease your carbon footprint), and you get money back that you can use towards your bill. Value for $$: Excellent! Depending on what type you're looking at, it might be priced slightly higher than traditional units -- But the energy savings, sleek design, and basically silent noise level make it worth it. I'll be buying another one once our next one poops the bed. THINGS TO NOTE THAT I FOUND HELPFUL: - They offer a trade-in program where you can get $10.00 off your purchase if you recycle your old AC. In NYC, you can schedule a free pick-up for your old unit (their website has the link for this) - The company is big on environmental sustainability (love to see it), so take advantage of their EcoRewards Program. During certain times of the day, you change your AC temp by a few degrees, and the money you earn can be used towards your electric bill. The company will send you a message letting you know when and for how long to do it. Buy it! It’s perfect for people who refuse to compromise style, comfort, or eco-friendliness. They give you everything you need to install it, including scissors for cutting the window lining. They also sell great winter covers, so you don’t need to remove the unit annually. If you want an AC unit that combines style, efficiency, and noise level, this is a super solid choice.

I don’t quite know where to start. From the first start up, the unit shakes so much for a brief moment when the compressor turns on that it rattles against the window loud enough to wake me from a dead sleep despite requiring 7 screws directly into your window and frame. I had to add additional support below and on the sides to stop it from shaking on startup. One of its biggest selling point, the inverter, also somehow results in the unit running so slowly that it sounds like someone is playing a bass tone on a subwoofer throughout my apartment (only noticeable to those sensitive to sounds). The front panel is warped and held on by weak magnets meaning it also rattles if not put in place JUST right. It’s super quiet other than that… The carbon filter is a joke. It takes up about 10% of the entire intake and a brief smoke test showed almost all air was pulled from around the filter. The firmware is not even currently on version 1.0 and it shows. It requires a Windmill account for any functionality (most WiFi enabled ACs do but it’s another relatively new, unproven company hoarding your data). It doesn’t maintain previous settings such as cool vs eco, set temp, or fan speed on startup. Similarly, night mode only stays on for one night at a time and is buried deep in the settings that are not intuitive to find. Why not just put the slider on the main page taken up by 50% advertisements for your local utility company? Not sure if the unit is at fault or the app is bad but it tends to hover about 5 degrees above where it’s set in app. With the app’s energy meter, you can see it actively NOT using the full capacity despite also not being anywhere close to the set temp. While the energy meter should be a cool feature, anything other than the real time readout is hilariously inaccurate with my unit using 500 watts for 3 hours straight and then reporting an average of 287 watts over that same time period. Every encounter I’ve had with this company including the app, customer service, and the unit itself shows that this is just another tech startup with too large a marketing budget. I’d never recommend this AC to anyone.

No incentive was offered for this review!
Quiet, energy-efficient, excellent cooling performance, low-profile, minimalist design aesthetic, seriously easy to install. Truly the best AC I’ve ever owned. After one year of ownership, it continues to exceed my expectations. The App even connected to my WiFi on first attempt. Very happy with my purchase.

Best Window AC Ever—Stylish, Quiet, and Powerful!
I couldn’t be happier with my Windmill AC! From the moment it arrived, the setup was unbelievably easy—out of the box and cooling within minutes. The design is sleek and modern, blending right into my home without the clunky look of traditional window units. Performance-wise, it’s outstanding: whisper-quiet, powerful cooling, and the airflow feels cleaner thanks to the built-in air filter. The app control is a game-changer—I can adjust the temperature from anywhere, even before I get home, which makes it super convenient. What really stands out is the attention to detail: the packaging is eco-friendly, the installation kit is foolproof, and the customer service is top-notch. It’s clear Windmill thought about everything to make this experience seamless. If you’re considering an AC upgrade, stop searching—Windmill is worth every penny. It cools beautifully, looks great, and feels smarter than any AC I’ve owned before. Highly recommend!

Beautiful, user-friendly, easily installed, and consistently defective
I love almost everything about this product. But unfortunately, the one thing I don't love is a big one. It's built with a defect and a large number of its units fail within a month to a year. Search "reddit windmill ac temperature stuck" and be horrified by the consistency of the warnings. I wish I had read them before buying. All I read were the glowing reviews from various consumer product websites. Within one month to a year, a demon will possess your unit. The temperature setting will light up and it will self adjust itself to 60 degrees, the lowest setting. Attempt to change it in the app, on the remote, or on the unit itself, and it will show your desired temperature for a second before laughing in your face and dialing back down to 60. And keeping the 60 lit brightly on the screen. The defect is likely caused by a failure to properly moisture-guard electronic components. It's been occurring as far back as the 2022 mfg date units. And from my experience, I know it at least persisted into the may, 2024 manufactured units. My first unit started this behavior around 20 days in. Amazon shipped me a replacement, and I had the joy of packing up the old unit and sending it back to Amazon. New unit has lasted a little more than a month and is also showing the signs of a death spiral. The temp has auto-adjusted itself twice to 60. Only way to "fix" it is to power it off for a while and hope it works later. This time, the buttons on the unit have stopped working and the unit has stopped reporting energy usage statistics to the app as well. Besides that... It's an amazing window ac unit lol. Installation was as easy as possible, controls are intuitive, app design and automations are easy to understand and useful, and the unit itself is not an eye sore. It sucks a lot of moisture out of the air and I love the way the room I have it in feels when it's on. But at the end of the day, it doesn't work. I'll probably spring for a July window ac unit because the midea u-shaped one that gets good reviews just looks so hard to install. I don't usually write reviews. But this company knows their product is defective. They would probably replace this unit if I asked them to. But what's the point? Am I going to endlessly install, uninstall, and ship back heavy equipment, just to have it happen over and over again. It's not a one off. You deserve to know before buying and being excited and then disappointed! Please, buy a different brand's unit.

Quiet, Efficient, Smart
I've had the Windmill air conditioner for a little over a year now, and it's the best home appliance purchase I've ever made. I live in an apartment and was aiming to cool my room without constantly running the central AC. I always have my device set to the 'Auto' fan speed and 'Eco' mode. I'm on calls throughout the day, and with these settings enabled, the AC noise is very manageable and is not picked up by my mic. It's superior to the older window units I've had in the past. As an added bonus, since I started using my Windmill rather than my apartment's central AC, I've seen a significant drop in my monthly electricity costs. This device will eventually pay for itself in the coming years. The WiFi functionality is huge. It's fantastic being able to turn on my Windmill through the app on my phone before getting home. I also have to give a shout-out to Windmill's customer support. I had a couple of questions about the warranty, and their team was incredibly responsive and helpful. It's very reassuring to know there's a great team behind a great product. And, as a bonus, the Windmill-branded scissors that came in the box are very high-quality; I find myself using them for everything to this day. Still, a few things to keep in mind. Installing it by myself was quite a workout. I highly suggest you get a second person to help lift it into place for both your own safety and proper installation. Also, I do wish the unit would remember my last fan settings after being turned off. It's not a huge deal, but it is tedious having to manually select 'Auto' and 'Eco' every single time I turn it on. Finally, I did end up having to buy extra insulation foam to seal some of the small gaps around the side panels since there wasn't much included in the box, but it was a quick and inexpensive fix. Despite these imperfections, I would still recommend this product. It's quiet, efficient, smart, and backed by excellent customer service. Lastly, I should note that I acquired this unit through a promotional offer. However, I have used it daily for over a year, and this review reflects my genuine, long-term experience with the product. I hope you found this review helpful.

Best AC I've tried!
I live in an old house that gets hot and humid very quickly in summer. I've tried so many other window units, and this is by far the best! It looks great (both from the inside and outside view) and was super easy to install. It cools down my place quickly and quietly - I have it in the window in my living room, and it easily cools the entire common space: living room, side room, dining room, and hall. The best part is how quiet it is! I can sit on the couch essentially directly next to it and still be able to hear the tv or have a chat with friends. Honestly, the first time I plugged it in and turned it on, I thought it was broken because I could barely hear it, but it turned out it's just *that* quiet, especially compared to other units I've used. I love the bluetooth functionality as well. I can go on the app when I get out of work, turn on the AC remotely, and by the time I get home, it's nice and cool. Other reviews have mentioned the internal thermometer is off by a few degrees, and while this is true, it hasn't had any impact on the unit working for me. If you're on the fence, I absolutely recommend this product!
