Does the cream have much of a smell to it? I'm hiking in bear country this summer!

I have never noticed any smell and I have been using it for years. To make sure, I have just put sone on my hand to smell it and, to me, it doesn't smell at all so I think you'll be fine. I'm in South Africa at the moment and I wear this cream every day. It's fantastic cream and very easy to use. Enjoy your hike. Linda.

Is there a particular smell in this sunscreen or has it got a neutral smell ? I really need one without fragrance.

From memory, it didn't have a smell, but I didn't use it for long: the tube is small for what it costs. Altruist, which is odourless, is much better value.

Must this be repeatedly applied during the day if just working in garden

No I only apply it once before going out, if it was very hot and I was out all day I would reapply. I have fair skin.
