Great Receiver
Excellent sound.Had a problem with the audio from one of the HDMI outputs on my Oppo Blu-ray player. The receiver recognized the audio as stereo, when it should have been multi-channel DTS-HD. I upgraded the receiver's firmware and that problem vanished. No other HDMI problems at all.I have a 500 gigabyte USB Solid State drive attached (loaded with FLAC-format music files). The receiver does not recognize the drive if it is attached after the unit is powered on - but it works perfectly if the drive is attached before power is turned on.Audio is clearer than I ever had with any previous non-Elite unit. Dialog in movies is easier to understand. Music is clear. Well-recorded selections sound outstanding.I have owned the unit for a month. It has been operated every day, hours per day. Have left it on all night a few times. No failures or problems, other than a loss of picture two times when switching between USB input and Internet Radio. Unplugging the unit for a minute or two and the problem was fixed both times.

Defective design and Warranty eye opener
I purchased this expensive receiver thinking I would have it for at least 10 or 15 years like the old Sony Receiver I had for over 15 years. I also purchased a Square Trade 3 year warranty with the receiver, just in case. Within a year, I returned the receiver for repair because it was locking up and the only way to get it working again was to power down and do a hard reset, which deleted all my preferred settings. Within a year after I received the repaired receiver, it was having the same problem. I returned it for repair, and within a year after the second repair, it was having the same problem. When I called Square Trade to return it for repair the third time, since it was within the 3 year warranty period, Square Trade wouldn't accept the receiver saying that the two previous repairs had cost more than the original cost of the receiver, and that this had completed their obligation for the warranty contract. I told them there were several months left on the warranty period but they told me to look inside the Square Trade contract (it was purchased to cover a $999 piece of equipment) and that their obligation was there as long as the original price of the equipment was not exceeded in repairs and the time period had not run out. In purchasing the Square Trade warranty, I saw no place in the ads that stated there would be a restriction on repairs if the repairs exceeded the value of the equipment. To me, this is deceptive advertising, but honestly, I have myself to blame because I didn't go on line to read through the contract. I hope this helps someone else to understand a little more about these warranty contracts. Pioneer apologized for a 3 year old $999 piece of equipment that wasn't working correctly and Square Trade told me they were done with me. That's it folks. Let the Buyer Beware. Next time, I'll purchase something other than Pioneer and hopefully have a better understanding of the extended warranty, should I have the need to use it.

Buy with caution
SEE UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS REVIEWIn the tradition of Elite Pioneer A/V Receivers, the SC-87 is a great product. Setup was very easy and the sound is crystal clear. Just hook everything up, place the included microphone in the seating position and let the receiver calibrate itself. Couldn't be simpler. If you still want to tweak things, you can go into the menus and adjust multi-band equalizers and level adjustments for each channel. For me, this is an upgrade from the Pioneer SC-55. I wanted 4K pass through and Dolby Atmos. I went ahead and purchased 4 Onkyo Dolby Atmos speakers (the ones that reflect sound from the ceiling) and so far they are working great with this receiver. Dolby Atmos sounds awesome. Free Dolby Atmos demo material can be streamed from Vudu and there are some Dolby Atmos movies available on Blu-Ray.Now some of the cons. Switching between video sources can be very slow sometimes taking up to 10 seconds. This is normal. HDMI handshaking is always tricky and for some reason, this particular model takes more time than any other receiver I've owned. Not a deal breaker, you just need to be patient. Another minor item to mention is how long the receiver takes when you turn it on. It takes about 5 seconds. Some universal remotes (like the Harmony remotes) start sending commands before 5 seconds so you will need to program a delay into the remote. Take note, this receiver is limited to 9 channels. Dolby Atmos is limited to 5.2.4 (5 surround, 2 subwoofers and 4 ceiling speakers). You can NOT do 7.1.4 or 7.2.4. If you really want those back surround speakers, you need to go to another brand.I would highly recommend using the iControlAV5 app for your mobile device. You can control the functions of the SC-87 more easily instead of using the onscreen menus built into the receiver. You can also easily switch between surround modes.Speaking of surround modes, this receiver will upconvert any stereo audio signal to Atmos. While watching a 5.1 movie, simply switch the receiver to "Dolby Surround" and you will get audio from all speakers (up to 9 channels).Overall, great receiver. You can find this product at great prices (well below the retail price) so look around a bit. Well worth the money and will elevate you to the latest and greatest home theater sound.UPDATE:At first I gave this receiver a glowing review. Well, after owning this receiver for the past 7 months I have decided to upgrade to this year's model due to lack of HDCP 2.2. Also, I was having HDMI switching issues which caused the receiver to lock up. I don't think it's the receiver itself, but more that my components just don't play nice with it. Still would recommend if you don't care about using future 4K devices. The Dolby Atmos is quite amazing!
