Q: How does this amp compare to the more expensive VX1?

Hi Frank, I have not heard the VX1 but I am really pleased with the VX2. I would have gone for a VX1 but I prefer black units and the VX1 only appears to be in silver.One thing that did catch me out was that the VX2 does not have a headphone jack and so I have to use a separate headphone amp and this means a second unit on my desktop!! Other differences are that the VX1 has a phono (left and right) input so I'm guessing you could connect a record player or similar. However, the VX2 has a single coax input but it also has an optical input so if you have a decent soundcard or other equipment that has an optical output, you will get a higher quality transfer.All in all, apart from the regret of the missing headphone amp / output, I would highly recommend the VX2 as it produces a high volume and great clarity if you output it through some decent speakers. I have it connected to my laptop through USB and drive a pair of Q Acoustics 3010 speakers connected with fairly good QED Airlock cables. With decent CD rips (WAV or other lossless format), the sound is fantastic and I would never need any more oomph in my study as the loudness is more than enough.If you do go with the VX1, just be a little careful who you purchase from as mine was a 'UK' model but came with a US lead. Waited a month for the seller to send me the correct replacement!!

Please be aware the Topping VX2 is not a headphone amplifier and has no phones connection. If you are looking for a similar product that will work with headphones then look at the Topping models VX1 or TP30.The only thing those two are missing against the VX2 is that they only have USB input for laptop / PC but no Toslink SPDIF optical connection.

Q: Does it have auto power on/off feature like in Topping VX1?

Yes, system powers down when there is no input signal. Powers up when signal returns
