Excellent cross cut shredder
This shredder is exactly what we were looking for in a home personal shredder. It's fast and effective and fairly powerful. We have managed to jam it a couple of times. If the envelope is fairly thick, open it and feed a few sheets at a time. Duh! We've learned. Clearing the jam is straight forward.Destruction is total! I defy anyone to reassemble a document after it has gone through this machine. I'm sure it can be done, but someone would have to REALLY want to get that information, (can you say "National Security Issue"?), to have enough patience and persistence to do it.This thing is built like a tank. I don't expect to need another shredder for the foreseeable future. And with the built in safety features, it is ideal even for families with small children.Overall, 5 stars.

Lasted half a decade!
Bought this on Amazon almost 5 years ago and it finally croaked. Disappointed but hadn't realized we'd had it for so long, so already 2 thumbs up for its longevity! We used it 1-2 times a month for maybe 1/2 to 1-inch pile of items at a time. Sensor is in the middle so putting little papers (receipts, addresses ripped off magazines/catalogs, etc.) to the right or left of center wouldn't advance the blades until something hit in the middle. Never tried slicing a credit card. It always sounded "winded" with 4 sheets of paper going through at a time, so I tried to keep it to 2-3 sheets. I did slice mailing labels, which gum up the blades, but would run a regular sheet of paper every few label sheets to break it up. It also sliced nicely through staples although I tried to put those through sparingly.PROS:- fairly quiet - love this!- double buttons (power & fwd/back) deter little ones from easily turning it on (although we leave it unplugged anyway for this reason)- top cover area makes shredding area even safer from (little) fingers- fairly big basin and compresses well (although often stacked up on the shredding side and had to be pushed over to the opposite side to make room for incoming if not emptied)CONS:- HEAVY lid (especially for lift-off when emptying)- shreds in strips (check the manufacturer's pictured definition of "cross-cut", not quite the confetti I originally thought)- current price - deters me from purchasing another right now (in 2008, we paid <$100)A good machine for the price we paid. Would definitely purchase again (at our original price)!

Excellent shredder
I got this shredder after my last one died an unnatural death at the hands of an obnoxious child (not my own, can you tell?) who liked to test the limits of everything mechanical in the house. I thought, "find a mid-priced shredder on Amazon and move on." I was very pleased with what I got from Fellowes. Oddly, it comes with a CD. Does anyone seriously need shredder software? Eh. No harm, no foul. However, what I liked about it was the grounding plate around the shredder feed. If you have fingertips on the entrance to the shredder, it turns off. It's impossible to get fingers chewed by this shredder. While there are no toddlers in my house, I can imagine that this shredder is the perfect choice for a home that still has small children around. Or maybe even perfect for very clumsy adults. It's also got a CC shredder which I've actually used and I can say it works as advertised.

Good shredder but way too safe!
This is a good shredder - all the Fellowes shredders I have used have been. It shreds 8 sheets, like it says, and has a little credit card slot which I am not sure is really needed. The "Safe sense" feature, however, is annoying. If you so much as touch the giant silver bar on the front of the shredder while putting the paper in it trips the "Safe sense" sensor, and stops the shredder. It actually makes it quite difficult to use. Had I known how sensitive it were I would have looked for a shredder without that feature. The slot is so small anyway I can't see how even a child could get fingers into it. It also interferes with any paper that is not loaded perfectly straight. If the paper is crooked it will feed upward, trigger the sensor, and shut off the shredder. Extremely annoying. That brings me to my second complaint: the width of the slot is too small. It is only 9 inches wide, which means you can't stick full size envelopes in it. You have to fold them first, and then load them perfectly straight so it doesn't trip the safe sense sensor. The shredder I replaced, also a Fellowes, did not have any of those problems.

Does not last
I purchased this item as a gift for my husband. Just for normal household use. After 7 monthes we need to cool it off after several sheets. I am very disappointed with this shredder and would not recommend it at all. It even smells like the motor is burning.
